Need an Overclocking Mentor

I am very experienced in the computer world, however when it comes to the voltages and the BIOS settings I'm not 100% sure of what they all do, I can do the simple overclocking but I would like to push it further.

Ideal 4Ghz.

My computer:
Q6600 G0 stepping
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 (4x1GB)
2x ATI 4850's
Maximus Formula
Zalman Reserater XT with extra radiator inline

All watercooled NB, SB, all mosfits.

The objective of this post is to just get you started. There are stickies and guides all over the internet, Your best resource is yourself, there is no hurry.

For starters try this. (I am not going to look up the specific wording of the setting in your bios, it should be simple to translate my instructions to your specific bios commands available by checking your manual. The best thing you can do is to read, re-read and read again the bios section of your manual and google/look up anything you do not understand it you wish to do/know/learn more than just plugging in numbers)

a) Find on your board and in the manual the procedure for clearing/reseting the cmos and familurize yourself with it.

b) Download the memtest86+ .iso and burn (Nero or some other buring utility) a CD, You will use this to boot into to help make sure you do not corrupt your windows installation.

1) set your memory voltage per the higher end of manuf specifications - I know its 2.1V so for start set your memory voltage to 2.1V - leave all memory timings on Auto, This may result in lower perormance than advertised but we will come back to it later. Do not ever increase your memory voltage above 2.1V or you will void the warranty. Later if you wish you can come back and see if the machine will run on 2.0V memory voltage.

2 )Make sure everytime you go into the bios that your memory mulitplier/divider, Memory FSB ratio, Memory speed, - it may be called one of those or something like that - to a 1:1 ratio.

3) set your cpu voltage to 1.375 Volts.

4) set the cpu mulitplier to 8

5) set the FSB to 400MHz

6) lncrease the MCH/Northbridge voltage 1.25 V is "normal" to 1.3V (1.375 is max per Intel spec sheet).


Boot into memtest and let it run a full pass and if all is ok try windows and a few of your applications/games.

That will give you 3.2 GHz a good place to start getting serious about OCing. Your memory should be running on spec at 800MHz.

See how that goes and post back. I if you feel adventurous try cpu multiplier 9 x 400 after you get the 3.2.
