i was planning on building an i7 mainly for gaming around mid may, but i saw a gtx 280 for 260 and was wondering if i should buy that now or see how the prices are in the next month. what do you guys think i should do? buy it or wait?

Wait until a week or two before you plan on building, then revisit this thread.

If you really want a deal on a GTX 260 or GTX 280, consider getting a used one.

Probably not. Outside of combo deals and/or other specials, which we can't predict here, you won't see much change in prices -- especially since they've just recently dropped.

That's a pretty good price... when again are you going to get the rest of the parts?

Normally I would say wait, but after looking at the prices of other models of the GTX 280, I wouldn't blame you for jumping on this deal.

i planned on building the computer after my semester was over, so probably early to mid may

Hmm a month and half from now then. A bit far from planning a build but workable.

Well the card is about $230 once you factor out the cost of the game ($30 for COD:WAW is reasonable). So it is a pretty good deal.

So like Tiraides said: Wouldn't blame you if you got in on this deal.

probably will be ordering around the 8th, hoping to get all/most of the parts just before mid may

also, i have the samsung t240hd at 1920x1200 so i think the gtx 280 might be a better choice than the gtx 260

There's also the 4890 for $210 @ Superbiiz after/before cashback (google for tutorial) and lots of them.

how does the 4890 compare with the gtx 280? does it perform a little less than the gtx 280 to not notice a difference? i like the warranty on the gtx 280 too.

There's this thing called a review site, such as this one here @ [H]OCP where you can compare them. The link is up there on the red bar between Community and New Posts, and the review is the 3rd Featured item.

kthx :), but if i wanted to go with the 4890, i could probably wait for that anyway since i don't think those prices will be changing by that much. what do you other guys think?

Dude, the $210 price for the HD4890 that lowteckh said is a sales price, just like that GTX 280. So in a week or two, parts will be back at their normal pricing areas.

i'm just gonna go ahead and buy the gtx 280 and then see if i can sell cod5

i have a few questions though... would i still be able to fit everything in a cm 690? what psu should i be looking at now? i probably won't be overclocking and thinking about possible upgrades.

Yes you can fit the GTX 280 inside the CM 690. PSU wise, just go for the following PSUs, dpending on your budget and upgrade room:
$80 - BFG Tech LS-550 550W PSU
$115 - Corsair 750TX 750W PSU

What's the rest of the build look like?

oh wait, we're waiting a month... forgot. :(

well, i have been thinking about it for a month or two now.. the build should look like this roughly:

core i7 920
gigabyte ud3r or asus p6t
3x2gb ddr3 1600
640gb 7200rpm
cheap optical drive
cm 690
750w psu

i should have whatever else i need.
