Need advice on studio monitors...

I want to buy a studio monitor 2.1 set for my home computer based studio. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would prefer to get them off of www.musiciansfriend.com. Please provide links. Thanks in advance for your help.

a budget would help... plus keep in mind with a good set of studio monitors..you won't need a sub..
 
How would I connect them to my soundcard?? That is what is confusing me. I'm just getting into computer based audio.

Those are powered just like most computer speakers. You would use a mini to rca adapter cable to plug your soundcard to your speakers.

I would also look at the KRK RP-5's. They are also powered. (you don't need an amp or reciever) They also have XLR, RCA, and 1/4" balanced/unbalanced inputs, are biamped, and have electronic crossovers builtin instead of passive ones. They are $149 a piece so they fall just at your budget.

What does all that mean? I'm still confused as to how I will get the output from a soundcard to go into an XLR, RCA, or 1/4 inch input. Unless the professional recording cards come with that??? I am really new to this.

^yeah those look like they would blow the LX4's away, but once you buy 2 of them with the sub you'll probably be looking at 500 bones....

ok.. just forget about the XLR & 1/4". They are just additional inputs that are available on the KRK's. You are going to use the RCA inputs. For this.. you will need a cable like this.. http://www.audiogear.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?key=Adpt2RcfMsm&preadd=action
and a pair of rca cables. You can buy the cables anywhere.. or your local radio shack.
 
You mentioned getting a recording soundcard in another thread; such cards usually have 1/4" balanced outputs for monitors.

M-Audio monitors are good, and so are KRK, Alesis and Fostex ++. Stay away from cheap Behringers.

If you keep your studio in a "live" room a 2.0 system may be easier to tune than a 2.1. In a dead room a subwoofer should be no problem. However, to reproduce a correct stereo field the info from the subwoofer must be strictly non-directional, which means that the crossover frequency between the sub and satellites must be below 80 Hz, and preferrably below 50 Hz. This is rarely the case for cheap 2.1 systems.

What is worng with Behringer?? I have one of their mixing boards and it seems pretty good to me. I would've bought a Mackie, but I simply could not afford it at the present time.

I'd take a good 2.0 over a lower end 2.1 monitor any day..

If you're confused about all this stuff, I'd talk with some local music store / studio people, even if you don't buy the stuff there.
 
I live in a small town and there is only one music stuff and he doesn't sell recording gear. That's why I'm asking alot of questions here.

Their mixers are better than their monitors imo, although the eurorack series suffer from somewhat noisy mic preamps and aux buses (you won't notice with a tape deck/portastudio, but with computer recording you will). Got a eurorack 602 myself.

Nothing directly wrong with the cheaper Behringer monitors considering the price, but other brands will give you better sound (more clarity and definition) for the same price.
 
I have noticed that the behringer mixer is a little bit noisy, but once the music starts playing I can't tell the noise. If I remember correctly, my Mackie I used to have was better as far as noise goes.

well will you be getting a pro soundcard? if so then get that first then get some a nice set like http://www.alesis.com/products/m1active/ for around $349 .. i use them and have zero complaints.. but if you are just starting out you may want to focus on other things first.. learning software/sequencer/synthesizer .. or whatever you are interesting in using.. lots of great info over at www.studio-central.com also..
