Need advice on external HD enclosure

My granddaughter dropped her laptop and it is totalled. She needs to recover files from her HD. The repair guy suggested that we buy an external HD enclosure and then just attach it to another computer as an external HD and access the files.
My question is, do the external enclosures provide compatible connectors to enable a laptop HD to be used? I have looked at several venders of enclosures and they speak of accepting any internal HD but I haven't seen anything that suggests that the enclosure would work with a laptop HD.

Also, if the enclosure solution is not possible, what is the easiest, cheapest way to recover the files from the HD?

I would appreciate any guidance on this.

Thanks,

you can buy an adapter at frys that will convert the laptop drive to plug into a pata port
in your computer.. or you can buy a 2.5" laptop hd case and use it through usb. That's if the hd is still ok.

Thanks for such a prompt reply.
I'm not familiar w/laptops. I figure most of the hardware components are proprietary design items unique to each brand. When I pull the HD to install it in an enclosure will that HD have a standard pin configuration for data and power that will conform to the configuration of the enclosure or is there some sort of adaptor required to standardize the connection? Sorry about such basic questions but I'm out of my element around laptops.
Thanks for any help that can be provided.
