Need a quick decision between purchasing E6400 or E6600

L626A Brand new E6400 for about 170USD vs L628A 3months old E6600 for around 240 USD, what should I choose? is it worth the bucks going for the e6600?
 
Why would you consider the e6400? Why not the e6420, which has twice amount of cache for the same price. That would be a better comparison.

What he said. Also from what i understand the latest batches of E6600's are not overclocking so well. However the E6420's seem to be overclocking on par with the rest of the Core 2 line.
 
Ive also been reading the newer batches of the E6600 are not overclocking so well. Most people cant get above 3.2 without upping vcore to 1.5 =/ me personally.. Not liking that.

I was about to go out and buy the E6600 and after i heard about this batch b.s .. I might hold out. So its more of a gamble now. E6420's have been hitting 3.5 ghz. Not bad at all.
 
From what Ive seen, the new E6600 and E6420 have the same Batch/stepping so technically they should overclock the same...... $240 for a used E6600 mmmm Im kinda tempted to offer you my E6600... Im thinking of ditching this cpu cos its got a fsb wall of 552fsb and I want a higher multi...... This E6600 (L632B172) is one of the best out there.....
 
hmm theres many different batches. im not too familiar with the E6420's Im reading 7 pages of different batch codes for the E6600.. So far some are overclocking well. Some arent hitting over 3.3ghz =/ SAD..

Sooooo Im going to be purchasing a new motherboard before i go out and buy a new cpu ;)
 
While thinking about it really its funny. If we find we cant hit 3.5GHZ on a processor without watercooling or upping volatages were unhappy with it. LOL i remember when hitting 3GHZ with an athlon 64 or X2 was a hell of an achievement.

Its a good day when i can say i hit 3GHZ on a dual core processor at stock voltages with stock cooling and top out at 54C

Way too many batches out there to make that assumption. And if someones offering a used E6600 for $240 they should be slapped in the face for charging $13 more than it costs brand new I dont care what stepping it is. better to shoot for a used E6700 with the 10X multiplier.

Impressive overclock but i still dont think its worth more than new. For all you know in anyone else's machine they may not get those clocks on water even. Just because it does well in your system does not mean it will in others even if they buy everything exactly the same as you have. Thus the term YMMV what works for you is no guarantee of anything.

And realistically if yours does it he has just as much chance getting a new one or even another used one to do it so long as he can avoid this latest batch.

Only one argument about what you said.

It's a known fact that said cpu does 4ghz. In any other system in which it does not oc as well, you can rule out the cpu as being the reason. Might be the ram, might be the board, but youo KNOW the cpu is capable of 4ghz

Unless of course he's lying. Not saying luihed is, but there are douche bags on ebay that will show you screenshots all day long of other peoples stats.

The E6600 has been out for a few months now and how many have you seen that matches my overclock, or even close to it? Not saying my cpu is the best but his chances of getting one that will clock like mine is pretty slim.....

As for batches, most common batch for both E6600 and E6420 right now is LxxxGxxx which makes them the same......
 
I have both a E6420 (L647G476) and a E6600 (in fact 2x of them L640A823 and L632B444) I also have a E6400 and a E6300) If money is a concern I'd definitely go with a E6420 (I wouldn't touch another E6400 with a ten foot pole) and if money is not a primary concern I'd go with a E6600. Of course this is only my opinion and thankfully my money. I fold 24/7 with my machines and I don't OC' them to extremes. I keep the vcore below 1.40v, my E6420 is 3.0 GHz, one of my E6600 is at 3.2 GHz and the other is 3.0 GHz.

Edit: Please remember I fold 24/7 and the WU's are very cache dependant, that's why I wouldn't want to get another E6400 (only 2 MB's cache)
 
the reason why i want to upgrade is for some extra cache. ;)

Im a cash cow. I have money. I love to spend money. But spend it wisely is a different story.

Hense why im waiting out possibly to Q3.. Q6600 FTW . Ive seen some hitting 3.6 <333333 mmmmmmmmmmmm

back to the batch issue.. Its more of a gamble then it was last year with overclocking. Yes its allllllllways a gamble when it comes to cpus.. but now the rumour has it

"no wonder the price drops LoL" its sort of relivant if you think about it. Most new 6600 cant hit over 3.2??? WTF? honestly.. like stated above. alot of the older 6600s were hitting 4 ghz... under 1.5Vcore. now you cant get above 3.2ghz unless your in the 1.6Vcore + Extreme cooling..

Perrrrrrrrrrrrrrrsonally.. WTF INTEL...
 
I can't say I have a whole lot of money, but I think a lot of people are holding out for the price cuts in Q3 and I'm definitely one of them. Have you heard anything about the quads running super hot? I have 3x Zalman 9700's (I like the ease of resetting the cpu) will the Zalmans be good enough to cool a quad? I'm not an extreme OC'er, but I would like to get at least 3.0 GHz out of one.


Edit: Yeah, I've only got one of my E6600's to 3.2 folding cool and stable (1.40 vcore) and my newest one is at 3.0 GHz (1.35 vcore). I had heard the rumor that the best E6600 cores were being held out for the Q6600. 3.0 GHz is good enough for me, I just use the machine for folding 24/7.

The E6600 is a winner! You can OC it to 3.4 with high end air and I have seen posts with it hitting 3.7 on H20. I just sold mine and it was as cool as cucumber at 3.4. It is by far the best OC'ing CPU I have ever owned.

My e6420 does 3.2 on stock cooling i bet i can pull off 3.4 with ease once i get a better cooler. It seems people are underestimating the 6420 quite a bit.
