Need a new video editing rig

I just want to say that I won't be able to build a new video editing rig for at least 4 years and probably won't be able to upgrade any component outside of my hard drives so I need it to be future proof, if there is such a thing. Speed takes priority over storage, but I'd like to walk away with at least 4 TB of storage.


1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

HD video editing with Premiere CS5

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$3,000 is budgeted, but the less I use the better so I can use it on camera equipment

I'd like RAID 0 for my OS/App hard drive, firewire is needed, no SLI is needed, USB 3.0 would be nice but not required, SATA 6Gb/s would be great. The less time I have to twiddle my thumbs while videos are rendering the better.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

Yes, Windows 7 64-bit.

Please come back and ask again a week into February as we'll know what Newegg combo deals will be available then. However if you don't want to save money via those combo deals, let us know now and we'll set up a build for you right now.
 
Bumping now that it is February. If there are no good bundles right now, that is fine. I'd like to order everything from NewEgg to keep it simple.

With SB dead in the water your options are limited as to what will last several years.
 
Can you afford to wait until the sandy bridge recall is over (probably over a month) or do you need to build before that?

If you need to build right now your only real choice IMO is an x58 rig. With that the main descision you have to make is whether to get a 950 or 970 (is 2 extra cores worth an extra $600 to you?). Pretty much any x58 board with two x16 slots (you can drop your GPU in one and an x8 raid card in the other) will be fine.

If you are going to have 10 hard drives plus presumablly an optical drive you will also need a controller to drive them since the ICH10 used with x58 only has 6 SATA ports. Unfortunately from what I can gather most desktop grade add-on SATA controllers (whether onboard or on cards) seem to be relatively poor performance. A server grade SAS card (you can use SAS controllers to drive SATA drives) is probablly your best option for driving those additional drives.

get a dual socket s1366 SM mobo.. put in 32nm quads. put in 2x 3x4gb ram (t=24GB). get a SSD for OS, a SSD for pagefile/rendering. then as many 2TB HDDs as u like. get a 460 or 560 nv gpu: it has cuda capailities for PS *&* Premiere CS5.
a 750-850W PSU (Corsair AX-xxx) will suffice

IMO unless you REALLY need huge ammounts of ram or performance greater than a 980x or huge amounts of PCIe going dual socket is a waste of money.
 
I can wait until the recall has finished, I'm just really anxious. You don't understand what it's like to edit on this PoS that I am using now. I also have to spend this money or lose it by June. And if it's any incentive, it's your tax dollars so build it like you would build for yourself :)

Pretty poor build IMO

That highpoint card seems very expensive. Even when you count the extra cost for the breakout cables the intel (rebranded LSI) that I linked is cheaper. Only reason to go for the highpoint would be if you want raid 5 for your data drives (but i've seen way too many problems with raid 5 arrays to trust them (I'm not convinced that raid 5 as typically implemented at the low end is a net gain in data security over running single drives), raid 1 all the way for anything important.

The motherboard is rather limited on expansion slots, in particular with a dual slot graphics card (or a card that is technically single slot but that you don't really want to put anything next to) in there your only place to put the raid card is the slot that steals lanes from the GPU and if you want to add a second raid card (which is quite conceivable if you want to use every bay in a full tower case) your only option would be PCI.

The 870 is marginally cheaper than the 950 but it's slower and supports less ram and less PCIe. Not a good buy IMO.

Ideally you want 3 or 6 sticks of ram to go with that (it will work fine with other numbers but you won't get full triple channel), any decent DDR3 should be fine.

I'll leave GPU and case selection to others.
