Well it so happens I need a new PSU and GPU. Killer of video cards apparently, all 3 down and out.

Looking at a sub $100 750W PSU and possibility a Radeon 6950. nVidia just doesn't offer anything near that at the same price point.

$105 (before $10 MIR) CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W
$250 (used with transferable warranty?) MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III PE/OC or another 6950.

I could get 2x 6850s for $220-ish, but with a 6950 for the same price I'm sure I could afford another one later on in the year to CF 6950s instead.

Any insights or other recommendations? I have a $40 Newegg code that expires Feb 26th, so I need to buy at least the PSU soon. Shame, Corsair's promo code on Newegg expired last night.

GTX 560 Ti 448 does seem like an interesting choice. It's nice to see that it can hold its ground on higher resolutions with only 1 GB.

I don't know too much about this 6950 unlocked to 6970 stuff. Does that basically mean an unlocked 6950 is pretty much what a 6970 would be out of the box or does it still lack other things a 6970 has (other than shaders)?

With that said how comparable are the 6950(unlocked) compared to the GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores when both are overclocked?

The GTX 560 TI 448 Core has 1280MB of VRAM. The GTX 560 Ti and GTX 560 has 1GB of RAM.

No it's basically a HD 6970. However the chances of a successful unlock these days is fairly low and requires getting reference cards or cards from not so good manufacturers.

An unlocked HD 6950 should outperform the GTX 560 TI 447 Core

Well its decided: 6950 2GB. Thank you all for your input. I do like nVidia more for stability, but an unlocked 6950 sticks its foot in the door. While still being cheap enough to Crossfire, while the GTX 560 Ti 448 Core is a limited run series.

Looking at this picture makes me want to buy another 6950 2GB, look at all that empty space under it. Removed my Slipstreams from radiator and installed them into the case. Now it's a hurricane inside.

Hmm any recommendations on CPU Air Cooler for a run of the mill i5 2500K 4.5 GHz overclock? (Maybe in the $20-35 range)

I recommend this HSF:
$30 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus HSF for LGA 1366 and LGA 1156
