EDIT: New format over my old one:

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
6) Will you be overclocking?
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

1.) Gaming/School work for Elec. Engineering and some Cad/Cam stuff for CNC
approx.
2.) $8-900 shipped and taxed
3.) I live in Santa Clarita CA but can make a trip of around 50 miles to a local store (I wish PC Club still existed instead of having to drive to my local rip off Fry's)
4.) I only need a CPU, PSU, Motherboard, Ram, CPU cooler, and possibly a new Screen and an SSD if so recommended
5.) I will be reusing my old Thermaltake Mozart ATX case, and 4 WD 500gb Drives, and my older 570HD SC Video Card
6.) I do not plan to overclock unless the motherboard can self OC
7.) My max monitor res sucks since its old but it will be upgraded soon
8.) I plan to build the system soon - I would like a newer parts system build so that this thing wont be obsolete before I build it and I cannot get parts for it a few months/ Years down the road when I want to upgrade more and or replace broken parts; thats why I am here now.
9.) My motherboard needs SLI, Raid, eSATA, I have no idea what the rest of that is asking from me, its been too long and have no clue what UEFI even means.
10.) I do have a reusable OS, it is windows 7 Home (purchased thank to the Hard forum for $30 as a student. I am currently running 32 bit and would probably keep it that way but am open to switching to 64.

So I am a gamer and an Electrical Engineering student; not that that EE major really applies to this build as it is basically for gaming and plugging in answers and or some CAD/CAM design for my CNC classes.

So here we go, I need a new Mobo, CPU, and RAM. I will get the cooler and what not, Im looking to keep my old HDD's.

I will admit as a younger lad I was into computer builds but I was still a novice at best back then, though I did manage to keep this rig running for quite some time until a recent unfortunate event out of my control has forced me to get a new set up due to my old XFX 780i having a broken connection internally with what seems as the Northbridge.

So with that said, I am now accepting fate of needing a new board. I did upgrade my GPU to a single 570HD SC from evga so please take that into consideration along with the fact that I am running a VERY large Thermaltake Mozart TX case, so a large(r) mobo can be somewhat accommodated.

I come to the [H]ard|Forum looking for advice and input for a good/great setup that will last me for quite some time and be able to keep up with the extremely fast advancing market of electronics. So nothing old, no older chip sets that are already obsolete and un-replaceable should anything go wrong; that's what brings me here today!

Please and thank you in advance!

Oh and I forgot to add I have no Idea how to overclock soooo dont think Im going to be pushing the boundaries of that rig, which means more or less it needs to already be great out of the box

To make things easier for us to help you, please answer the sticky questions in the format it's posted in. Thanks.

whats your budget? do you live near a microcenter store?

around 800-900ish? the cheaper the better but that doesnt mean I will save a few bucks for crappier parts. From my experience I loved XFX, OCZ, EVGA, BFG, etc. Basically anything on an Nvidia chipset and intel board.

My last asus board was not too impressive at all and always loved my OOOOOOOoooold 680i which is what made me steup up to a tri-sli 780i.

Ive had horrible experiences with Radeon and anything to do with them and their terribad drivers.

I just need a very stable fast gaming system.

Unfortunately, with NVidia GPUs you'll have to spend $300 or more just to even get a GPU with a good performance-to-price ratio. This is because all current NVidia GPUs priced under $300 are either rebadged old-generation chips or have a terribad performance-to-price ratio.

Well I still have a good GPU my 570HDSC I dont think I need anything stronger than that for a while, I can always double up and SLI, which is why I would like that capability on the board. Or even stack up more if I need to.

It looks like he will be reusing a 570.

If this is the case, then why spend so much just to attain only a minor increase in performance? As such, now that I know that he will be reusing that GeForce GTX 570HD, the only chipset choice on an Intel board is, well, Intel. NVidia is now no longer designing motherboard core-logic chipsets for Intel or AMD platforms. In fact, NVidia has not manufactured an Intel-CPU-compatible core logic chipset at all since the first generation of i7 CPUs came out.

well as of this moment I have no computer since my motherboard is dead dead. Seeing as how I cannot get a replacement 780i I see no other option other than just making a good/decent build with a new motherboard, CPU, PSU, etc.

Are you putting a new LCD in this budget as well? If not, here

$199.99 - Intel Core i5-3470 Ivy Bridge 3.2GHz
$149.99 - ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s
$29.99 - COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1
$39.99 - G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
$229.99 - SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256B/WW 2.5" 256GB
$99.99 - Antec EarthWatts Series EA-750 Green 750W (15% off w/ promo code EMCNBHG22 , ends 8/29)

Total: $734.94

Do note that I listed Newegg prices. You'll want to buy everything from Amazon to avoid Newegg taxes. The prices should be very similar on Amazon and if it does cost a little more, it'll probably still be a little cheaper since their are no taxes. However that PSU might be cheaper on Newegg with the promo code.

Also we ask for specific model numbers for a reason. I do not know what kind of drives you already have, if they are PATA drives you wont be able to reuse them with that setup as there are no PATA ports, only SATA.

Also that case appears to be an HTPC case?

currently no as my frys actually has a sale once in a while on them, last week there was an LG 3d screen with 1080p high res for like $100

as for the case, why yes it is, to be honest I just like it for its nice clean look, plus it sits in a closet and I only open the doors when I need to use the computer, but it does have a tremendous capability for airflow, which I take full advantage of.

as for the Hard drives I have no clue. They are all seagate baracuda 500gb

I will attach a pic for better visual, hopefully this can help.

hard drives, the fourth one is on the other side of the case, sorry in advance for picture two, it would not take a picture without the lines and there was nothing in front of the camera.

Well they are SATA drives then.

That motherboard has 6 SATA ports, so you'll have 1 SATA port free for an optical disk drive or another harddrive/ssd.

alright! thanks for all the support.

I have a few questions though, would I see any increase in performance if I did upgrade to lets say an ASUS rampage board with an i7 and some good ram?

or am I still wasting my time and money on a system that is going to be bottle necked by that nvidia GPU?

Since when did everything switch to ATI when Nvidia seemed to be doing so well? I cannot stand to think that those horrible drivers on previous ATI cards are still the case on newer cards?

Is it possible to go hybrid and attain a good performance setup? or is Hybrid not even possible, as I did see that some Mobo's offer crossfire and sli support.

Depends if the programs you use take advantage of hyper threading. Games do not by the way.

OH and would an AMD build be better than my Intel build? As far as I always knew, Intel was destroying the market with their CPU's

For the price, intel beats amd almost everywhere.

Also ati is better for cards under like 250$, above that and nvidia becomes a huge factor.

Ati's drivers still suck but they are much better than previous generations.

Sounds like a plan, I'm still debating on what to do, what would be the performance gain if any at all by lets say a core i7 with 6 unlocked cores, 12 gb ram, on that Asus rampage v board and my 570 hdsc

You can't afford an i7 6 core setup with your budget.

Well just sayin if I spent the little extra to get it what would my performance gains be, I saw a few for like $300 at frys; again no other computer store super close I'm planning on driving down to Micro Center to look at what they have

For gaming almost no gain. What other programs are you using? If they are multi threaded, you'll see some gains but imho not enough to warrant the high costs of a 2011 setup. The motherboards cost a lot also.

understandable. I just keep looking at the future and saying, well what if something else breaks, or what if I need to upgrade because as of the current moment I cannot, in fact I have no computer. I just keep answering these on my phone.

But saying I was able to afford a bit more on a better set up, what $$ figures am I looking at In terms of keeping my card and HDD's and Case in order to be upgraded to the newest system with pretty good performance. I really dont use hyper threading but I dont want to max out the CPU from just running a simple MMO game.

To be honest the only high stress that computer will ever see is just running games and videos....

so it might even be an idea to add another card and run an older board with an i7 or i5 right?

sorry for all the questions I just want to make an educated purchase and not just say "well this is all the newest stuff so it has to run better than anyone else because its new and I spent lots of moneys on it."

** yes, moneys, that was my noob humor **

Id rather know Im getting a solid build and go from there

Going with a 2011 setup just isn't cost effective. Just to get it a cheap 2011 mother board will cost $200, and the cheapest cpu is $300. That's $500 out of your budget right there. And I wouldn't even recommend a mother board at that price anyway. Therefore, no need for a 2011 setup.

That setup I gave you is as good as it can get for a gaming rig. Unless you intend to overclock past 3.9ghz, it can't get much better and still be a good value for the money.

If you want more performance go with better harddrives and retire those older drives. Go with a newer gpu from the amd 7000 or nvidia 600 series of cards. 7950, 7970, 670

At your resolution multiple gpus aren't really worth it.

well that was the exact answer I needed, thanks for the plethora of information. Ill see what is going to happen in the next few days, I got a connection with a company that will reflow my old board and see if it fixes it, no harm no foul if it is not repairable. And I can throw in my old xbox 360 and see if they can reflow that for like another $10. It may just be better to try and revive everything before jumping the gun and dropping basically $1k on a system that will only be a little faster than what I have

Unless your sig is completely out of date, Skillz's recommended setup will be a lot faster than your current Q6700. For future reference, clock speed isn't the sole factor of CPU performance. There's ton of other factors involved that determines actual CPU performance such as the CPU's design, IPC, etc. In this case, due to the newer technologies used and the faster IPC, the Core i5 3470 will outperform your current CPU in games by about 30% to 40% depending on the game.

my sig is pretty out of date. I am still using the q6700 though

I understand that my severely outdated technology can be outperformed by newer upgrades but I figured id give this old rig one last shot at redemption and just get it reflowed for $20. We shall see what happens next. If all else fails a new build is in my future for sure.
