i have an i7 860 which i plan on OCing to 3.5-4GHz on an Gigabyte H55n using speedstep for 24/7 usage. i have 4GB of corsair dominator 1600 cas9. i have one 2560x1600 monitor and plan on two more 1600x1200 monitors for the sides. what single GPU will be enough to run any game on at least medium settings (i dont really care for AA since it uses too much GPU power for negligible returns) on this resolution? since i have 3 monitors and only 1 PCIe slot, i figure the fermi cards are all out, is that right? i dont think i really need a 5970, but a 5870 is probably about right.

im wondering if i need a 5970, or a 1GB 5870, or a 2GB 5870, or a toxic/lightning 5870, etc. i would like to buy used since im not made of money, but i will get what i need to. thanks!

5970. Take off, nuke the site from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.

yeah i am building a case i think, so size needs to be considered, but i can accommodate whatever. 5970 costs a bit more than a 5870, so i want to know if a 5870 will do at this resolution. i dont really want to nuke it from orbit if its not entirely necessary, as fun at that may be. :D

When I built my last machine, I got a monster sized Cooler Master case. Some of these graphics cards are 12"+ deep, so you really do need a non-proprietary case. Especially if you are going to SLI/Crossfire the things. Some cases have enough room for 1 big graphics card, and then the hard-drive bays or other things get in the way.

As far as which card, check this site. It lets you enter a max price (if you have one) and will tell you the best card for the $$. Its good for poor people like us. I actually went with the 5870.

You said you have one 2560x1600 and want to buy two 1600x1200 monitors? Last time I checked I thought you needed 3 monitors at the same resolution to to eyefinity. Unless I missed something, I think this is still the case.

I'll agree with this if for no other reason than the very cool Aliens reference.

There is always the Asus Ares but at $1000 no thanks.

a single 5870 is more than enough, heck, if I were you I'd just get a 5850 and oc it. The performance will be very close and you'll save a lot of money.

4960x1600 = 7936000 pixels
5310x1050 = 5575500 pixels

My computer, with SLI GTX 480's, completely annihilates one 5970 in the VAST majority of games. Yet my computer has a difficult enough time generating sixty FPS at this resolution.

A 5870 definitely isn't going to cut it. And it's a tall order to ask a 5970 to generate that high of a resolution. Maybe if you lower the resolution, it wouldn't be so disappointing. You know, native resolution for Windows and low resolution for gaming.

did you guys ever even stop to consider that maybe i dont have any nuclear weapons handy? gosh. you act like everyone has a spare warheads just lying around. :rolleyes: oh, or $1000. :D

yeah i just sold my 5850 because it seemed to be holding value more than 5870s, and i wanted a little upgrade. i have decided i want something with a blue PCB to match my new H55n. i got it yesterday and hot damn is it pretty. it seems sapphire and gigabyte both make some blue pcb 5870s, anyone else?

5870 should handle that just fine.

That's nvidia sli right?

is it? i just searched google for "30" 20" eyefinity" and it was the first thing that came up. i just assumed it was eyefinity, but i suppose its possible it was nvidia surround...

ok it appears hes using softTH. soft Triple Head? like Triple Head 2 Go? dont know what it is, but its not eyefinity. this puts a large wrench in my cogs. :(

Or, just sell the 30" monitor and buy another 20". Your triple setup will still have more viewable workspace than a single 30" monitor, and will give you eyefinity with a comfortable form-factor (12:3).

Who says you need widescreen monitors for proper eyefinity? With 16:10 monitors, you either get a massive 48:10 ratio (hard to see much on those outer monitors), or else you rotate them and get a constrained 30:16 ratio.
