Hey guys
As a fan of glossy displays, I'm looking to buy a new monitor.
So I researched a bit and found the HP 2311x/2511x/2711x displays, which are glossy (right?).

I Read that the have a s-pva panel. How are the viewing angels in these types of panels?

An other glossy monitors you can recommend on?

Thanks in advance

If you're in Europe you might still be able to find the Acer G245Habid, which should be glossy: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1037308927&postcount=14

If you're in North America try finding the G245Hbmid.

I've had the HP 2510i and it had quite severe vertical gamma shift.

The 2-11x series should be different from the 2509/2510 monitors. Probably better. Maybe not.

The sad truth is that there are very few glossy monitors available.

Use this site to search for displays: http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=393

Click on a random display and go to "Egenskaper", then scroll down to "Skärmyta", and it usually says if it's matte or glossy. Ctrl+F "matt".

This is a custom search where it's selected to show only glossy displays:

http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=393#rparams=l=s70611353

As you can see, there are very few monitors to choose from.

The ones that have a number of only 1~3 or so under "Butiker" are (often) displays that aren't in production anymore. (the "Butiker" means how many stores are carrying it), but you might still be able to find it somewhere. Sometimes (though it's rare) years old monitors show up, so watch for that.

Avoid VA panels, as they all have annoying gamma shift that causes a weird 3D effect (not the same kind of gamma shift as on TN). Viewing angles are between IPS and TN, and contrast & colors are/can be quite good, but it's just not worth it when you have the GS.

The HP monitors are TN panels. They should be glossy... but I've also read that they have some kind of anti-reflection. So... maybe they aren't truly glossy, but have some kind of crap stuck into them.

For some more about VA check this: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1609910

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. Going to research now; I'll post the updates.

Thread about the 2511x and related monitors: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1607726

The HP 2311x's aren't glossy, the 2711x's are.

Comments about the 2311x from http://reviews.shopping.hp.com/8843/XP598AA_BVEP_ABA/hp-2311x-23-led-monitor-reviews/reviews.htm:

The only downside is I just don't like the matte finish, I am a big Glosssy screen fan, text just looks sharper.
That being said this monitor is sharper than any other matte finish LCD or LED screen I have seen.

If you don't like the glossy look or the refection bothers you this is the screen to get.

If you like the glossy screen get the 2310e, It's an LED like this one but with the glossy finish. That's what I ended up with and I love it.

Edit: If you use that site I mentioned to search for monitors, generally it's correct but sometimes the info on whether a display is glossy/clear or matte/opaque can be wrong, so always double check somewhere else.

The
http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?l=s70611353
link gives *completely* different (sometimes very wrong)
results depending on what browser you use. Firefox seems to work.

According to wikipedia, Niue is an island nation in the
South Pacific. I'm assuming the language on that web page
is Niuean? Google translate doesn't list Niuean. Does anyone
know of a Niuean to English translator?

Fortunately we can at least get a list of make/model numbers.

I can add:

Acer P205HC $139.98 @ Staples (chain of big box office supply stores)
20" 1600x900 contrast: 20,000:1 response time: 5ms VGA DVI-D
stand tilts but no height adjust or rotate. Has VESA mount.
Front surface of screen is just plastic, not glass. TN panel

Thank you, Tamahagane, this list looks like it will be very useful.

Wow that's totally random. It's a swedish site.

What do you mean, clicking on the link takes you to some other site when using IE or some other non-FF browser?

It should look like this:

(About that last screenshot; I don't have a capture addon installed ATM in FF. This was just captured by ScreenGrab at a custom res of 1152x1850 -- on a CRT -- and cropped in PS)

There's less to choose from than it seems though... Several of those are old and not in production any more, and a few of them are actually matte. The B2430H for example seems to be matte, from the research I've done on it.

There are also some models that don't show up, the HP 2311x, 2511x and 2711x for example, as they're not available in Europe yet.

Also note that if a monitor lacks the info on whether it's glossy or matte then it won't show up in that search because it's filtered to only show those that are claimed to be glossy (Högblank).

If you wanna see all monitors including matte ones and the ones lacking info, then use: http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=393

NU is the country code for Niue, so I thought it was from Niue.
If the URL had .se I would have guessed Sweden.

I tried links -g and it gave matte instead of glossy.
I then tried Firefox and got the correct list of glossy.
I couldn't tell that it was Swedish, but it looked somewhat
related to German, so I tried google translate German -> English,
(just to see if it would do anything useful at all) in Firefox,
and got the list of matte. I have now tried Swedish -> English
and got the correct list of glossy, and it did translate quite
a bit of it into English.

Thank you.

No idea what .nu means.

A lot of things are related to German...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_languages

Examples:

bruder - broder - brother
apfel - äpple - apple
eis - ice
haus - house

I tried http://translate.google.com/ now and entered http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?l=s70611353 there... it seems it causes a lot of things to fail, for example you can click on a monitor but you can't go to Properties/Egenskaper while in translate mode. At least not on Firefox 4.0 Portable.

However, if you go there (Egenskaper) first then enter that URL for translation, then it works. Like so: http://translate.google.com/transla...u=http://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?e=703901

A bit unrelated, but a lot of very small territories are assigned their very own top level domain. Some countries/territories are so small and without any need of their own top level domain, so they have decided to sell it. Tokelau (.tk) is another one - you used to be able to get a .tk domain for free actually.
In Danish and Swedish "nu" means "now", so it is one of the few (only?) tlds which actually makes up a word, and is thus probably more interesting (but afaik more expensive). It is probably also very interesting for people in France :D

I know the word Nu equals Now, but I'm not sure what .nu is supposed to be. That is to say, if it's meant to actually mean anything, or if the guy who invented it just took the word.

Not gonna research it though... don't really care.

Haven't seen a .tk in a long while, as I remember it they used to pop up here and there about 7+ years ago or so...

As for the HP monitors, I can vouch for the fact that all the HP Pavillion 10 series monitors (i.e. 2010, 2210, 2310, 2510) are glossy. The 11 series (i.e. 2011, 2211, 2311, 2511) are not glossy but matte, in fact they are kind of sparkly and grainy matte. The one exception I think is the 2711 which I believe is glossy.

Any HP monitor that features "Brightview" technology is a glossy monitor. (With Dell, glossy monitors are called "True life" technology).

If you are near a Staples or Best Buy they usually have HP Pavillion monitor models on display and you can check those series numbers out in person.
