I am looking for the absolutely cheapest motherboard for overclocking my socket 478 Celeron D 340 2.93 Ghz CPU.

Any 865/875 board should be fine since that Celeron is 533 FSB you have plenty of room to work with up to 800 of the 865/875. Well, any 865/875 that allows for manual FSB adjustments :).

Ok, I've had a few 865PE and 875P based motherboards and one Via PT880. The Via motherboard was the cheapest (I think [H] reviewed it a while back, the MSI Neo PT880 LSR, but I'm not sure if it's still available), but I had issues with it when Windows XP SP2 came around, and it never came back to life after that. While it was still alive, it overclocked my 2.4 GHz P4 A Prescott (the non-HT 533 MHz FSB model) to a whopping 3 GHz without any voltage adjustments, just FSB frequency increases, and on air cooling.

After that board gave up the ghost, I bought an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe (865PE), which is still available. Same overclocking experience with the processor, and I had much better luck with stability after SP2. Then one of my housemates' computer died (an old Pentium II Gateway with an original SLI setup), so now the P4P800-E is home to a P4 C 3.2 GHz Northwood running at 3.6 GHz.

I was holding out on using my Abit IC7-G (875P chipset, from my original gaming system from a few years back) for a workstation of some sort and not an overclocked gaming system, but I caved in and used it once again. It originally housed a 2.6 GHz P4 C Northwood back in it's day (no overclocking... I was a frightened noobie), but I was much more reckless this time and I got a good 3.2 GHz out of the P4 A.

So, my conclusion is: if you can find a decent Via PT880-based motherboard, that's your cheapest solution, but I'd much rather spend the extra $20 or so on a 865PE board. Abit, Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI boards that are known to overclock well based on the 865PE start at around $80 or so, and are still widely available. 875P boards are disappearing (I had no luck locating the legendary Asus P4C800 online, and I can only find the Abit IC7, which doesn't support gigabit ethernet and RAID), but there was minimal difference in overall performance between the 865PE and the 875P boards anyway.

Good luck
