NEC LCD2690

Are any SpectraView units being shipped out? I ordered one from pcconnection.com a month ago, and it still hasn't shipped.

yes the SV units are shipping. We do not have any orders for any right now though. That leads me to believe PC Connection never placed an order with us for one.

I finally have news about the humming noise. NEC Europe is aware of the issue and has the fix in hand. I am just waiting to see if there is a specific number for you guys to call. Not sure of the exact issue but it has somehting to do with resonance of the power supply and the different voltage / frequency europe uses influences this to occur.

I am glad to hear this as well, I was just about to pull the trigger on the Dell 27 inch until I read this... Now it seems some in the US have reported this as well, is this fix going to cover both the US and the Europe versions?

Thanks for your time travbomb... Out of all honesty, I believe its your activeness in this community that gives me a great impression of NEC as a whole.

This is also my question. I plan to buy 2690 (together with new pc) at the beggining of may. Could it be fixed for new models in that time? Thank you very much.

Hello travbomb,

this seems to be good news. I called NEC Europe today, and asked the support guys, if there are any news on the subject. Unfortunately, they told me, that there's nothing new, and that what I have heard must be rumors. So if there is any name, that I can refer to, or any number you can find out, that would be really helpful.

This fix will be in the hands of US tech support very shortly. We just received the documents from Europe yesterday so it may take a few days. Unfortunately the documents have internal only an confidential written all over them or I woudl share them with you guys.

I will do my best to have an answer for everyone today as to what they should do with their units if they are in Europe. I let NEC Europe know of the 5 reported cases on Hard and what countries each one came from and now I am waiting on specific instructions from them on what to tell you guys to do.

Lastly this should not be an issue as much here in the US since we do not run 240 volts. The voltage seems to have a lot to do with the resonance causing the noise. I was actually hoping to get the unit from the one US report but I believe he already sent his into Tech Support. Please let me know if anyone knows this is inocorrect.

I am just been informed that this issue has been fixed on the manufacturing end also so units shipping now should not have any of the noise issues. In a few days I will have the range of serial numbers which may have the noise issue from the original production run.

Great. Thanks. What will happen to those who have the problem in their displays? Will they be replaced by new ones or have the problem fixed on their existing display? I assume that NEC headquarters across Europe will be ready to sort this problem out when the affected units serial numbers are known and the fix is available.

What's amazing to me is that no other company seems to value a web presence like we have with travbomb. Trav, are you doing this out of loyalty for your company or because it's your job? If it's your job, then my respect for NEC has increased. If it's your loyalty, then kudos to you. You should get some kind of bonus. Thanks for all you do.

At the moment it is not part of my job, I just started doing it for fun. In the next month or so though it may become part of my job here now that people higher up are realizing the importance of these online forums and the resources they offer.

Thanks for the props, I appreciate it.

You are doing a fantastic job on this - I hope people in NEC are readiing these exchanges and see how your initiative and helpfulness are much appreciated by us.

Question For Travbomb,

Well first i want a thank you for all your response on this and some other forums you have posted. :D

My question is i'm going to live in europe this summer for 6 to 12 months. Does that mean that when I will be in Copenhagen that my 2690 will start Humming? If so is there anyway to get it fix before i go? i bought mine in Montreal Canada. No sounds comming out of mine for now!

Thanks Trav. ;)

Today i saw in the manual that Auto Brightness mode has 2 options, and i'm interested in the second one. From the manual: "Adjusts the brightness automatically for the best BRIGHTNESS setting based on the white display area."

Could it be some kind of dynamic contrast?

Thanks Travbomb also from mine for the good work on this forum.

I'm really impressed with NEC support - the work Trav is doing, the work to resolve the Euro buzzing issue and the service I've received on my own. Unfortunately, out of 4 2690s I've had on my desk, the original one is the best of the lot... since I can more or less effectively manage the issue that it has, I think I may just go ahead and keep it. It's the devil I know vs. the one I don't. What's odd is that I seem to be one of the very few who's seeing poor specimens of the LGP LM260WU1 panel, but I've seen 3 of them in a row now.

It's a wonderful display, this 2690, nothing inherently sucky about it at all - but it seems to be off to a rocky start, at least among us ultra-picky tech enthusiasts. Let's hope NEC continues to stamp out these issues so that people can buy with confidence.

and I'm really happy that I received back my money for this NEC and now I can spend only half of it to buy Dell 2407 WFP :). Hope it wil give me less headache.

I agree that NEC has hands down THE best support I've ever come across. I finished up my review of this monitor over at WSGF, and I ended my review with accolades for NEC support. I know of no other company that has such great tech support. They're responsive, attentive, accurate, and speak English (American to the boys across the pond). Also, reaching them is as easy as dialing the number, pressing "2", waiting <30 seconds, and hearing "NEC Tech Support. This is -----, how can I help you?"

Kind of like Painman, I'm on screen # 3 come next week, but I didn't have panel issues like he did. My original issue was a noisy CCFL ballast; but, then the replacement was screen scratched due to one of the cables falling into the box. Each time though, the NEC tech was apologetic that I had the issue with the display, and quickly worked to get my replacement going. I've had to deal with Tech Support from just about every major PC / Electronics manufacturer, and NOBODY can touch NEC.

Travbomb - any news?

David

From what I was told today all of the certified repair centers for NEC in Europe should have the same fix documents that I have, so we recommend you call your service center and have the unit sent in to be repaired.

Travbomb: So are you saying that if I were to order the SV version of this monitor, then NEC USA would ship a unit that already has the fix in place from manufacturing? Or is there a great possibility that I would still get one of the older manufactured models that doesn't have the fix in place?

Since ordering an SV version requires a drop ship from NEC, is there any way that someone could QA whatever monitor is shipped out to check if it is free of any defects and actually ship a quality product? It's probably asking for too much, but for the price of the monitor, I don't think anyone should expect anything less than getting quality.

I've been trying to hold off as much as I can to wait for the defect issues of this monitor to clear up and it looks like I may be close to finally easing my mind. I know the help you've provided thus far has given a lot of us some peace of mind.

Hello travbomb,

thanks for your advice. I just called NEC support again, to verify if they think that they could solve my problem. I told the support guy, that there is a person (you) who persuasively claims to be close to NEC, and thinks that the humming problem is known, an there is a fix for it. The support guy repeated, that there is no such problem and whoever claims that there is, was lying. He told me not to listen to anyone who claims to be an expert just to appear important. He asked me if I knew your name, because he said, that he knew all important people who are to be taken seriously. Since I could neither tell him your name nor refer to someone who should know about the problem, he told me to forget about all the rumors an that I will have to live with that noise. He offered again picking the monitor up for having a look at it, but pointed out, that as long as the monitor is within NECs specifications it will be sent back. So since the support guy I called last time told me, that if I am experiencing the same problem with two different devices, he thinks that there is no problem, I am quite convinced, that the only thing that will happen if I sent my monitor in, is not having a monitor for some weeks.
If there is anything or any person that I can refer to, it would be really helpful now.

regards, rao

jeeezzz people! will you ever learn?! Screw NEC, buy something else !!! You're the customer for god sake. You paid a big pile of money for this monitor, NEC support should kiss your butt to make you happy! And not duscuss with you if the problem exist or not !!! Customer is always right if you think he's not close your bussines !!! Yes, I am pissed cause I wasted lot of months first waiting to buy this NEC and then 2 more weeks to get my money back after sending back this piece of junk!

....and then 2 more weeks to get my money back after sending back this piece of junk!
If I were you, I would be quite happy with that. I just called my store again, and have been told that there is absolutely no chance to get my money back, as long as NEC would not accept the existence of my problem...

belive me I'm really happy and feel free :) I lost 100$ becasue this was shop policy if I decide to return this JUNK! but I feel much better and can't wait for my new DELL 2407 WFP to arrive :)

Travbomb - can you give us any more to go on please? The problem is that European NEC support staff we speak to on the phone may not have heard about this problem and fix officially and will need more specific information or documents to refer to. Grateful for some more help on this.

David

There has only been one official report of this problem in the US that we are aware of. This is mainly due to the fact that Europe took almost teh entire first manufacturing run of the unit and those are the ones with issues. I am still awaiting a list of serial numbers with the issue at which point any that we have in our US warehouse will be fixed before shipment. If you purchase the unit as a drop ship you should be fine since, our first intake has been sold thruogh.

Rao,

Can you let me know the following info.

Who you spoke to?
Who they work for?
Where they are located?

I know for a fact I will not know who you talked to but someone higher up here may know them. On the same note the person you talked to would not know me becuase if i was that important I probably wouldnt be on these boards ya know. But I do work for NEC north america at their headquarters and I have a copy of the fix straight from NEC Europe so I know both the problem and the fix exist.

Sorry for the triple post!

Call your service centers and find out if they know of the problem and the fix. If they do not please get their contact info, preferrably email and I will forward this on to the NEC European representative who I received the fix information from. I will request that European contact forward the fix onto the various serivce centers who do not have it.

Hello travbomb,
thanks again for your help.
I always called the german hotline:
Hotline D, A, CH
Tel.: +49 (0) 89 99699 233
Address
NEC Display Solutions Europe GmbH
Landshuter Allee 12-14
80637 München

I called them again to ask where you should send your information to, and who worked on my case and have been told that you should send your information to hotline@nec-displays.com. They did not want to tell me the names of the people who worked on my RMA case, but they gave me the number of the monitor service center in germany. I called them, and they told me that they do not know about the problem. The person who is responsible for the NEC monitors will decide if they will give me an email address of the NEC monitor repair center where you could send your information to and call back tomorrow to tell me.

regards, rao

Travbomb - thanks for this. I called my UK service centre (in Telford, Shropshire) and they had indeed heard of the problem, knew about the fix, and will fix my 2690. They are sending me packaging to arrive on Friday with me then sending off the display, them fixing it, and then returning it to me. The man I spoke to was very helpful.

Thank you very much for sorting this out. I hope NEC realize how much it is appreciated by us.

Is this an actual verbatim qoute from the rep ? If so..... Oh my god..... The left hand (him) does not know what the right hand (travbomb) is doing, and so he does the 'corporate shuffle' "Deny,Deny,Deny" Sounds like my Wifes workplace.Very unprofessional if so.
I hope this fool, whoever he is,gets his 'knuckles' rapped severely by management.

Lukx...if you think you are stepping up in the LCD world by purchasing a Dell 2407WPF
you have lost all credibility in this thread, and I would suggest you stop trolling, you have
made your expiriences known,I am sure everyone is aware at this point what you think
of Nec and the 2690.

Good news everyone!

I got a call from the service center and they said that the monitor was repaired.
We repaired thepower supply
I wonder if they applied the fix travbomb mentions or did it by guesswork.

I will get the monitor back tomorrow.

Well I steped in LCD world about 3 years ago buying Samsung 173P :).Or it doesn't count? So I can only step into LCD world when buying NEC? Well if so then I did:) Cause I get it and wasn't too pleased :).

Thanks Travbomb. I'm feeling better about buying one now. I'll be placing my order tonight.

So is Rao the only one left who's repair center claims not to have the fix in hand? I want to send these all over in one email so we can make sure it gets done quicker for everyone. thanks

it's the German Support of NEC Europe who claims not to know about a fix. Now that I have the phone number of their repair center, I hope that I can find out tomorrow, if they know something about this.

That's pretty surprising, NEC North America support bent over backwards to try and help with my issue. Heck, they're even holding my trouble ticket open so that I can call again in a couple months if I wish, and try another replacement from a newer batch (if a new production run takes place in the near future, anyway). I was never asked to provide proof of my problem even existing, or anything. Telling someone their problem is invalid because the company "hasn't heard of it" is completely unacceptable.

Speaking of newer production runs - Trav, is there any info that you can share on that topic? Thanks.

Hallo travbomb,

I've talked to the person responsible for the NEC repairs at the service center that's responsible for my area. She told me, that she had never heard of the problem, but was willing to ask if such a problem exists. She also gave me her email address and was very interested in reading the information you have to share. I sent you the address in a private message.
She called me back after a few minutes and told me, that she contacted NEC, and has been told, that no such problem is known at NEC. She also said, that she would instantly have a new monitor checked by a technician and see if such a problem exists.

I can't answer for travbomb, but the second replacement that I received today has a radically different serial no. sticker on the box than previously. Also, the rev sticker says 1E instead of 1A. The serial # itself is also in the 200 range; my earlier ones were under 100. I'm just getting home with it now, so I haven't even swapped it out yet. I'm going to put it through it's paces over the weekend and update my WSGF review, too.

I've had at least one 1E show up as a replacement. The one with the streaky stains on the panel is a 1E 711003xxYA. I can't remember what rev the final replacement was (gone already) but it had a 711002xxYA serial # like my original which is a 1A. Serial # stickers on the box from my original 1A and the one on the 1E that I still have to drop off @ FedEx are basically identical.
