Since i am selling my desktop i want a NAS (min 1G link) to house 2 x 3T drive, but i would also like it to be able to run Plex and also a torrent client since i will be moving to a laptop.

I see a few NAS that support Plex, but not torrent clients.

Anyone have any input?

Or any other application to stream movies from....

the HP Microserver is nice but not sure if i want to spend $450+ for a NAS, but would offer more flexibility..

Curiosity; when you say a torrent client, what does that entail to you?

I'm assuming you don't want to pursue the low-end home made desktop route running something like freenas (or something that runs torrent clients)?

Synology does what you want. Xpenology as well, if you want to DIY.

utorrent, or any other torrent client, i have things going all day on my computer.,

the idea is as low powered as possible but if it could do trans-coding would be good.

I am selling my desktop and getting a laptop in the next week or 2, and instead of worrying about connecting my laptop to watch a movie, or something, i would rather just do it all in 1 system always connected.

My Sony BR player can stream for me or i have 2 WDLive Plus boxes as well connected right now i would use.

i have been looking as i want something small, why i was thinking a pre-made NAS 1 NIC cable, 1 Power cable and done, nothing else to really worry about i guess,,.

So would i be better off just building something like this, as it seems for example the Synology DS214 Play is almost the same price...

Really depends on how lazy you are. Not meant as an insult BTW. If you just want to set it and forget it, then the Synology is more than likely going to be your best bet. If you want to get more involved and don't mind spending a bit more extra time getting things right, then the DIY route is your best bet.

If you do go the DIY route, that RAM is a bit overpriced for what it is. Pretty sure you can get 4GB of DDR3 RAM for not much more.

do i need ECC for an HTPC though?

never had ECC on a home rig..i guess if i go the linux route and ZFS or something, at most i will just have 2 drives in raid 1, likely.. but maybe more! (okay most likley more in years to come!)

just saw this thread so checking it out as well

I have a Drobo 5N, and i just picked up a Synology DS214se to test the waters to see if i want to upgrade to a 8bay Synology.

Both units i have used Transmission on to download torrents, and both have Plex server apps, and do an excellent job serving video files to my Roku3. Although, neither are beefy enough for transcoding in a timely manner. I also managed to get a BtSync server set up on both of them, for hosting my personal dropbox-like system.

That Synology unit for $149 had really impressed the hell out of me. Didn't expect it to run so well for such a cheap price. I even have a piss-poor combo of drives in there (a Seagate 3TB Barracuda mirrored to a 3TB WD Green drive) and it doesn't complain or glitch out. Definitely gonna get the bigger brother, when i have the spare cash.

If you go for the DIY way, consider FreeNAS 9. It has the FreeBSD reliability. Fairly straight forward GUI. I run it as a NAS with transmission (torrent), Firefly (itunes server), miniDLNA and Plex. Works great. There are many other plug ins too. The progress since the last 2 years has been impressive.

good to know about the ECC and FreeNAS (read about FreeNas a while back (1-2 years ago) but it didn't seem "mature" yet)

i had read over some of the cheaper $199 Syn boxes but seems mixed complaints of Plex working and not working and then not properly working.

i am leaning on the DIY route, as i am that type of person, go figure.

i am trying to keep this as cheap as possible as i need to buy the laptop still and i am only getting about $750 from selling my current rig and laptop is going to be about $1200-$1400 likely.

will most 1150 boards take ECC?

the Dual core saves me some money and is still strong enough to transcode, i will only ever be streaming to 1 device, but looking though various mobo's as this one only has 3 SATA and 1 mSATA, not likely o get more than 4 on a miniITX board

No. Generally, if you want ECC, you're basically looking at AMD if you can't afford the server stuff. Though I'm not aware of any AMD mITX motherboard that'll support ECC.

Not sure what you're saying here: Are you saying that you don't need a mITX mobo with more than 4 SATA ports? Or are you saying that you can't find a mITX mobo with six SATA ports? If the latter, they are available:

I recommend spending the extra $25 for the ST45SF-G 450W since it's of better quality and performance than the ST45SF:

You can see the differences in quality and performance between the two PSUs here:

nice find on the mobo and i forgot about that PSU, i was looking at it when i did imy SG05 build last year!

while the ECC ram would be awesome, due to price i likely have to skip on it. I do burn regular backup's of my important info to 50G high quality Sony BR's currently, this will mainly be a media store for the most part so if i lose some music or a movie i am not too worried i guess..as long as it doesnt poison the entire ZFS if i go that route..

i am always the one to go total over kill on systems, so i am really trying to keep this as cheap, yet as functional as i possibly can!

boards like this though could be something in the future perhaps

or if i could get this AMD board on amazon

The one I picked up here on the FS/T forum for $200. I have it running unRAID. My only complaint is I need more (larger) HDD. Have it @ 7.5TB at the moment and have about 1TB on backup drives I need to load onto it.

No it won't poison the entire ZFS. It'll just make it less effective. But still a pretty good solution.

Speaking of RAM, I noticied that you're planning on getting two sticks of that Crucial RAM: As I said earlier, that's a really bad price for 1GB or even 2GB of RAM since you can get 4GB of RAM for not much more:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036VO632/?tag=extension-kb-20

Plus the above 4GB sticks of RAM would let you expand to 8GB of RAM later on without having to replace any RAM. ZFS is somewhat RAM heavy with significantly large amounts of storage.

Can't vouch for that mobo: Never seen an AsRock server mobo before.
Probably the only decent AMD mITX mobo available at the moment. Though I really hate the placement of the DIMM slots.

Oh, I'm also a fan of the Dell T20. They were recently as low as $199 (barebones) in a hot-deal. They're basically using a Haswell C226 server board, so it has ECC support (if you use Xeon, Celeron, Pentium, or i3's).

It's slightly larger than a Fractal case, but not by much.

From what I understand (not running ZFS) this is absolutely incorrect. Non-ECC memory in ZFS can destroy your entire pool from an unreported memory error (mainly a stuck bit).

Any thoughts on a socket 1155 board that could take an i3 with reg'd memory?

i put freeNAS in a VM to check it out, seem's pretty dam slick!

I assumed when you say reg'd memory, you mean ECC? Registered Memory is only usable with LGA2011 Xeons.

Just search for C202/204/206 or C212/214/216 chipset boards.
