NAS/streaming media question

Hello all. I've been a professional tech a long time and have been building, breaking and repairing PCs even longer. I will be the first to admit streaming media is not my forte. I have built a NAS unit and have about 4TB of movies/TV and 900GB or so of music. I was given a couple AppleTV boxes but to use them I need iTunes and have to convert my media. Not happening. So my question, long winded as it may be is this what are others using for this type of setup? I've read some good reviews for Western Digital's Play device but I hate dropping money without getting advice I really trust. I will need 5 of these for each TV and all will be wired, if that means anything. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Cheers.

I have been using MediaBrowser 3 for a while now. There is a ROKU client and it works really well. You will need to have a windows machine act as a server though.

I just have Windows machines connected to the TVs and use network sharing. Just browse for the file on the network and double click it to play. Everything is on gigabit and 1080p movies work fine over the network. Probably not an option for you unless you have 5 capable PC's lying around.

I used to have a windows machine running Winamp ORB which would stream any video or audio file in real time to my Xbox 360 or another PC. It would translate the codec in real time to a format it could use. I'm not sure if this has been kept up to date so new devices can use it.

I would think any non-apple device would be able to just play a video from a network folder.
Chromecast might be a good, cheap option, but I haven't tried it and I think it is wireless only.

I use Plex with Chromecasts. Only downside is it doesn't do .iso's
