This may belong in SSD & Storage forum instead, feel free to move it. I just figured I'd get good response to PSU etc here.

Here is my build I'd like some more experienced eyes to look over. This will be a movie/music server. I was going to get a 8bay synology DS1812+, but I can build a much better machine for the exact same price. It will be in office for now, then into mech room/av closet later. I will be streaming BD ISOs to my media player. Drive failure isn't the end of the world (as I'll just re-rip ISOs) but it will be a time consuming task, so I'd rather not have to do it more then once.

All of my parts are from NCIX, as they have stock, but would use amazon.ca, or newegg.ca if stock (not sure on forum sponsor via Canadian favors)

I won't be linking as its painful on iPhone.

Mobo: Tyan S5512WGM2NR (for LSI 8 port SAS). 352.70
CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1220 V2 3.1ghz 224.28
Cooler: Hyper 212+. 29.61
RAM: Kingston KVR16E11K4/32 4x8 DDR1600 ECC. 278.01
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (like looks, has slots) 99.99
PSU: Antec Earthwatts EA-650 80+ Plat. B 129.95

Total: 1114.54 before tax.
Synology 1812+ is 1068.98

I could save by going with 2100 series i3 and still get ECC, but I'm not sure how it would do transcoding on the fly. I may also try and setup transcode on the fly to feed TVs or ATVs. Not sure though.

Also what drives are recommended? For media do I need Red, or would greens be fine? It will idle 24/7.


I plan to run NAS4Free and ZFS raid.

I'm open to suggestions. Even completely different build. I'm looking for an 8 bay setup. I won't need that space but may do a backup of the drives, to prevent having to re-rip, as it's time consuming. Also, who knows how many movies I'll buy in the future. But at 30-50gb per ISO, it fills fast, so expansion is key. I'm ok for now, as I have a bit of room on my WD nas, but it's gonna fill very quickly.
 
I'd go with Red drives because of all the issues people have been having with green drives.
 
How is the PSU for that build, obviously it won't be an OC, or gaming GPU situation. Base CPU, and up to say 12 drives max (room for 10 3.5 (2via adapters), and 2 SSD) 1 USB (for OS).
 
650W should more than enough to handle that build. Hard drives do not consume that much power these days. With that being said, $130 in USD for a 650W PSU is pushing the envelope. Most PSUs in the 650W range we recommend are under $100; but I don't know what that equals in Canadian currency.
 
Even though our dollar is worth more, years of being at 80 cents to the dollar, raised salaries and wages here higher then the US average. Thus more overhead, and more cost. There are quiet a few PSU in that area for under $100, that one just happens to be 90+ platinum. I figured it might actually add up, if its a 24/7 Machine, or is that a waste of time.
