micro atx, RAID (will probably use a software RAID), SATA 6G/s, onboard nic and video. two nics would be nice.

FreeNAS

I'm buying some of the same parts I used for my HTPC/Server. I don't have any type of backup in place in case the server fails so I'm building a NAS. I'm pretty set on buying the psu, memory and case. I'm really at odds at the mobo/cpu/gpu combo. I have no clue how that would run, if it's a deal or crap. The green drives look nice but it seems the people that have had issues with them were people running windows media server and letting the dirves spin up and down continously. I'm also going to put the OS on a flash drive not to waste the sata connections or drive bays. So heres the plan:

$130 Lian Li case
$120 mobo cpu combo with onboard gpu
$25 psu
$7 flash drive
$34 8GB of memory
3x $110 green sata 6GB/s 64MB cache HDDs

Comments please.

It should be fast enough. It does not have RAID support in hardware, if that matters.
Not really, I'm planning to use the software RAID utilities.

Also changed my mind about the drive. These have better reviews and have another year of warranty. I don't want to build a crappy backup system using crappy drives. Might as well save myself possible headaches by getting the better drive.
 
It should be fast enough but I'd honestly spring the cash for a faster CPU. Especially if you're planning on using RAID or ZFS with FreeNAS.

Since your gaming PC and HTPC uses the same CPU socket, that'll make future troubleshooting a bit easier since you now have two independent ways of determining whether or not you have a defective motherboard or CPU.

I actually haven't had any type of hardware failure in years *knocks on wood* but I like the way you think. I swapped out the mobo combo for your suggestion. Thanks!
 
Note that RAM can and will downclock themselves to the highest speed supported by that motherboard or CPU. So you could use that DDR3 1333 RAM with that CPU without issue
 
That is true, and generally RAM speed doesn't matter once it hits 1333. I hadn't thought of the overhead of the software RAID. All though the QNAP box I've worked with uses an atom CPU... Given it seems to take a million years to turn on :(
