hello there
i have a sandigital towerraid with about 16tb of storage, i used to save my movie library in it but then discovered VPN and netflix so its pretty much free space now
i started a project to digitilize my family photo and video library and did that with tb's to spare

now i want a good way to store the new media into the server, for me its easy, but for non tech'y sisters its hard to do it (specially since each one of them lives in a different house)

and i want them to have their privacy with the stuff they store, i thought i should just setup 3 VM's in my server ( 16gb ram, i5 3rd gen quad, 24/7 on) and install a storage oriented OS for them to use

so i thought i should ask the experts, whats the best OS to install into the VM's to allow easy remote uploads/access/view ? or should i just go with dumbded down linux distru
and is how does VM in general handle the esata connected storage power ? will still go idle when not being used ? will it read SMART ?

ok i just tryed joliOS, cant upload so no use
ubuntu one seems to be paid option

all i need is an os with good local (preferably mapped) media managment and upload feature from the cloud

Check out OwnCloud. It's basically hosting your own DropBox server.

You can create your sisters their own accounts, limit them to a certain amount of space, and they can only see their content. There are clients you can install on a PC and do automatic syncing, or you can access/manage it from a browser. Not only that, but you can stream music and view pictures from the web page, without having to download them first.

Pretty cool stuff.

Owncloud is probaly workable but I hated it when I tried it.

Ajaxplorer is pretty good:

They have a demo:
http://demo.ajaxplorer.info/tp/

I used that for awhile but then I found my ultimate solution!

I managed to install Synology DSM OS into a virtual machine and then mapped my server's shares into it to provide remote access.
You can see their demo here:
http://www.synology.com/products/dsm_livedemo.php

Synology IMO has the best WebUI management apps as well as mobile apps. You will be able to mount any network shares into the Synology OS and then set up users and permissions for each. You could even use the Synology CloudStation which provides Dropbox functionality but using your own server rather than Dropbox's servers.

I found everything I needed to set this up here:

Let me know if you want to know more about this or get stuck.

I can help you get it working. It's somewhat involved but not too bad. The way I know about making it work involves setting up a bridged connection in Windows. What OS is the server that you were planning to run the VM from?

DSM in a VM?? I had no idea that could be done! Thanks for the links as I see it's been done in ESXi and VirtualBox. Now I am going to get it working in Hyper-V!
