Lots of tutorials for ipod/itunes use.

PS you can have songs in the library and not the ipod as long as you do not sync the library to the ipod. Note that if you do change from manually to automatically updating the ipod, your library will remove any songs on the ipod that are not in your library as it is basically thoroughly synching the two.

Thanks for the link Mike!! I was planning on sitting down this evening and checking the quickstart for a url. Like I said this all for my fiancee, course she won't want to RFM, she'll want me to have the answer at my fingertips. I was just really impressed with the little thing overall, and felt like sharing. I don't care what the PC guys say, you apple guys are alright in my book! ( just kidding ) :)

Rich Tate, don't get me wrong, everyone is intitled to his or her own opinion and preference. I just wanted to disect what it was that wasn't liked about it.

After checking its usage, I can agree with you on the fact that iTunes could possibly use less RAM. But I think we all have to face the fact that the days when apps used very little RAM are gone. With more media and feature rich support being built in, and 1GB of RAM on average in the PC, I just stopped expecting it. I can still have all the applications open I want and not experience any sluggishness on my workstation.

About that WinPlay 3, I should see if I can find it and see if it buckles when trying to play a 192kbit VBR file... :p

You're right, alot of software isn't as streamlined as it could be simply because todays machines don't require it. Firefox is another one for me, love the idea, browser etc. but you load up a few tabs, and watch your resource meter. And the scrolling and page loading is pretty slow to boot. I switched off to Opera after my debacle with my bookmarks, and have been happy since.

In this case though, iTunes is clearly the only practical and most efficient solution, so I just wish they would improve it a bit.

How many people on these forums can say that they listed to their first mp3 on Winplay 3?

oh oh oh me me!

I remember runnin that back on my P-120 back in the day. resource hog.

Then someone showed me winamp with its spectrum analyzer. Helllo!

Just picked up a nano from best buy last night. They are selling like hot cakes. I picked up the last 2GB model.

What is that 'dock wanna be' item inside the box? Did anyone else notice this?

It is a dock adapter which will be compatible with future dock products.

Jod is grateful!! :) :)

I caused my iTunes problems :p

Well, I had many issues installing itunes on my machine. Most troubling was the lack of administrator priveleges and such. I fixed it by changing rights in my reg, but that's not what the avg user ought to go through.

Fortunately, they don't. I went for a reinstall and decided to leave out programs like klite's codec, media player classic, foobar, etc. iTunes installer went on without a hitch. It did install that "bonjour" service, but I disabled that, the ipod service, and the other driver service (name?). I also disabled all the startup crap such as, ipod helper. After a reboot, things worked fine.

True, quicktime was installed, but seriously...why worry about bloat when:

1. it's not even runnin' unless I need it
2. 4+ghz HT cpu and 2 gigs of ram

...til next reinstall!!

so what is the difference with the new "flash" and whatever was on the old ipods..noobie question =)

Previous versions had hard disks. Thus they were heavier and less likely to endure a good joggin'.

Yeah and the nano can survive being run over TWICE lol

What did you do to fix the itunes install? I am having the same problem and I don't know what to change.

Markt435:
LOL!! My bro and I were in tears while readin' that article on Ars ;)

torment:
I had to edit the registry a bit. Basically take a screenie of the error it gives you and match it up with a reg entry. Then go in there and allow rights for system. (can't remember exactly if that's right, but it's close)

On a much better note, zonealarm, Kaspersky, and bitdefender got into a brawl over my pc's rights. Of course, I lost :( After the reinstall, I decided to try out a more "vanilla" approach. I did not fook with codecs and services this time. Guess what worked flawlessy lol?!

The issue imo was klite's codec pack and media player classic fightin' over my file's rights. iTunes installed with Quicktime 7 just dandy. After I got things set I disabled one by one all of the services and startup crap left over.

So my rec would be to uninstall any sort of codecs and whatnot.

Good luck!!

Money shot with the keyboard!! It really shows off the nano's figure :p But what's in the 3rd pic?

I just found and installed itunes 4.9....no more problems.

I had a terrible time with 5.0 I hope Apple fixes the issues being experienced for PC users soon.

All you who put in an order for a dock on the first day of sales should be getting it soon. Its surprisingly heavy.

I didn't know what it was when I opened the package (big padded envelope), though it was probably something I got from Free Stuff. Opened it up, saw it was the box and noticed its weight. Opened the Apple box and pulled it out and first impression is how heavy it is. Its not that heavy but it has some weight to it.

Works fine... no I need a case and some plastic polish (hear that Ice Creme is the best?) and I am all set.... oh yeah, I need some new headphones too, forgot to order those.

very neat toys.. i just wish I had a use for one..heh. (portable music players in general).

too bad these weren't around in '99-02ish..(you'd see me carting my trusty discman around everywhere I went...)

has anyone else ordered one of these from apple? i ordered mine on mnday, they havent shipped it yet..geeze..

Yeah, I ordered mine on 9/15, and got it Wednesday (9/21) personalized (4 gb, black). Problem is, my friend bought it 12 hours after me early on the 16th, and his is still "Processing." I think they just got a major amount of orders fast...my friend won't be getting his for at least a week (minimum) and he ordered it over a week ago. I'm glad I got mine though! :D It's sexy as hell.

I ordered a 2 gig ingraved black nano and it got it in 4 days shipped from china..I was like no way :) I just orders a nano dock yeasterday and it shipped the same day..wow apple good stuff

thats probably because no one wants/has ordered 2 gigs

I can confirm the last statement. I have another friend who got the 2 gig, and got it in 3 days...the demand isn't nearly as high as the 4 gig I believe, thus the much quicker shipping on the 2 gb.

I bought my 2 gig yesterday (9/24) @ fry's. Just went down to the store and picked it up :p

crazy stuff...

Why is your package all damaged?

They didn't put the package in a seperate box?

It looks like it's just leftovers from Fry's "protection" threads. If the threads are off, they know the product's been opened...or something like that. But the Nano's surrounded completely around all sides. You'd really have to work hard to damage the sucker, lol!

Here's a couple shots of the super secret diagnostic mode that Jod found exciting and boring at the same time.

actually the guy is right. dopes it come up as a pure usb stick or it has the same old music protection like in the previous ipod gens.

by protection i mean, you can only copy to and from songs from the single pc u actually activated it from .

That's not how previous iPods work. The only "copy protection" they have is that you cannot copy inside iTunes, and the actual folders where the music files are placed are hidden.

yes thats wat i mean, so does the nano also have this annoyin protection ?

It's not an annoying protection, since it only effects iTunes. Sure, that can be annoying, but I really wouldn't call it "copy protection."

Just bought a Nano. My first iPod. Must say I am mightily impressed. I've always been part of the anti-Apple crowd, well I think it's pretty easy to exclude iPod and iTunes from this list. This is my first foray into both, I imported all my mp3's and fixed up my ID3 tags, messed around with the podcasts and radio. Very nicely done.

However the Nano is one of the most impressive bits of electronic gadgetry I've ever seen. This coming from someone who has been into computers his whole life and never glanced in Apple's direction til yesterday.

By the way, there are of course a few things in iTunes that could be made better.

First glance, is there any way to assign album art to multiple tracks? I'm only seeing how to do one at a time, which is not going to happen with 5,000 songs.
