Well this is what I've been working on... and why my ppd have dropped.

1x Q6600 (2nd comming in less than 2 weeks, see the empty spot on the bottom ;))
1x X2 3800

All of the boxen (not the X2) will be upgraded to Q6600's in the next few months.

And yes, Everything there is OC-ed. Min OC on any of the Intel systems in is +1Ghz

Nice setup, but I wouldn't be able to have my farm like that in my living space. The farthest I go to 'undressing' my systems is having their cases always open for better cooling. However, in the garage it might be acceptable. Props to your efforts though. :cool:

Well, until the $20 Best Buy Dynex case deal I just grabbed any case I could find for free that would hold a system. Behold the pics:

Yes, I know the quality of the pics is horrible. The camera on my phone does a horrible job in low light and artificial light conditions. Two of those "half cases" have already been replaced by the Dynex cases with one more on the way to get rid of the third "half case". However, I have filled two of those half cases with old parts, XP1700+ (with a flaky A7V133 that won't run above 120mhz FSB due to damage a friend caused it when he fried his T-Bird 1Ghz using my mobo) and a P3 800.

 
^^ Yup, that's pretty much how my systems look like but I have only one side removed and facing away so as not to be visible from most angles. In the years past, I was always folding with my systems completely enclosed. Since I restarted last spring, I kept them open to maximize OC stability. It's one thing to have high OC and run programs that take advantage of the extra performance for only a few minutes at a time, quite another 24/7...

Actually, all of my systems with full cases are completely closed up. I just make sure they have decent airflow (much easier nowadays with cases made to fit 120mm fans) and cables aren't in the way too much.

The case in the first pic is nothing but a shell. There are no side panels or front bezel. The second one is missing a side panel and the front bezel. The third has a front bezel but it's missing both side panels. I'm still not sure how I lost the parts on the second and third cases but the first case was stripped down like that when I got it from a friend. He had actually run his main system in that skeleton case for a while. I'll use whatever I can get my hands on for the most part. Right now I'm going to try and find some more spare parts somewhere to see if I can fill up that last case after the system which is in it is put in the Dynex I still have coming.

I wish I could run them closed but all my systems except the one running the GPU client are dual socket and highly OC. Additionally, I only have two types of RAM currently installed in all my systems despite several very different architectures, DDR1 or FB-DIMMs, both of which run hot. Closed boxen with OC dual processors and those specific types of memory modules is not recommended with F@H.

Our farms are polar opposites. You give them a walk in closet, computer cases to live in, UPS back up.

I throw them in the basement on a plastic shelf, naked with a $10 switch :p

Mine are also in the basement but half-naked, so I guess I'm somewhere in between the two extremes.:p
 
I can't keep mine open like that, my farm is too close to the water heater so i keep it above the ground on cinderblocks and closed up in case of any splash damage. It's the only corner of the garage that doesn't have cabinets and parents won't let it in the house.

Naked boxen are way more efficient space and money wise. one of these days!


 
I can't even think of leaving bare boards out like that. I could just imagine coming home from work to see a cat sleeping on each one because it's warm. :eek:

 
on a side note......


What would happen if a few bugs (this is my basement) crawled around the mobo?

Would that pose a problem shorting it out?

 
Hmm possibly. If they hit the right areas! I mean there are certain chips and resistors that are exposed on the mobo. You may want to figure out a way to mount them on their side. Would prevent most bugs from trying it.

it just take out the mobo, not the proc right? I can replace a 50 buck mobo, but I'd get a little ticked if a $200 proc went.

 
Eh.. it can always hit the proc.. I mean its rare... but if the planets align just right a short could hit various parts... Regardless I don't think that is a huge risk...

I ran a naked farm in my basement for over a year and never had a problem with bugs doing damage.

My E2160 that isn't doing so hot. I was hoping for more than 3% per hour.

The Microfly with the rad/res combo in the background was down for a couple of days as well. :(



 
I have a spare room in my dorm since my roommate graduated in December, so I use his old desk to seat a dedicated folding computer.

The main reason I've de-boxed this system is better ambient temperatures entering my (modified) Tuniq Tower heatsink. There's a Q6600 (SLACR/G0) under it at 400MHz x 9 @ 1.415 V. The temps are 35C idle / 58C folding

The system run's notfred's diskless folding linux64 OS via a USB stick.
