While the rest of us old farts have been rocket jumping since the mid-90s, I guess you n00bs need a little bit of instruction. Let me give you some insight, aim down...fire rocket....get good at it. Try that with your crappy console, peasant.

Check out the video.

Covering the main types of rocket jumps that I use in the Quake Champions BETA. I learned most of these in Quake 3 and Quake Live... the skills still apply and the rocket feels pretty good in the current version (they're working on improving it further though).

I remember playing some ridiculously difficult Quake Team Fortress training maps that required you to double-rocket-jump (floor, then off wall), or combine a grenade jump with a rocket jump to overcome an obstacle. PAINFUL, especially because you were close to killing yourself.

Regular rocket jumps are simple :D

I remember teaching rocket jumping 101 classes in quake 1 on canalzon, on dialup.

Then TF2 comes along and we discover boosting. Holy fuck is that shit fun.

RJing is a really fun past time, and it pretty much never gets old. Anyone can learn, and there's no skill ceiling. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for some nice relaxing fun. It's even applicable in actual FPS matches too! It's where the role "roamer" comes from in TF2.

It made me chuckle when the gunboats came out first. Nobody wanted to give up their shotgun. Meanwhile I was bombing in on their medic, killed em, and got away with 15hp. RJ boosting the whole way ;D and now everybody does that!

It's fun to think of kids learning to rocket jump from a YouTube video. The next generation of PC FPS gamers!

I learned to rocket jump while playing quake 1 on a server over dialup. Maybe BloodyIron was teaching me ;)

Why don't the just make rocket boots for the game and call it good?

Because then the game would be called Starsiege Tribes.

It changes combat significantly, similar to games with double-jump. Tribes works around that by having huge maps with lots of terrain to hide behind.

Leaving rocket jump as an option with a cost is a much better mechanic for an intense brawler game, because you have to decide before you RJ:

1. CAN you take the health loss? And if so, is it worth the health loss?
2. Are you going to become an easy mid-air target, or will you surprise them and shoot first?

When everybody has zero-cost rocket jump, you only have to think about 2. And you're a lot less likely to surprise people, so you tend to use it less.

I meant rocket boots that actually do damage. Like a nearby jump that would damage you and your opponent.

So you want a button that performs a rocket jump for you? That's what they make scripts for.

It's not cheating, it's a feature included in Quake to let you automate things like auto-typing quick status updates/taunts (think clan matches), one-key engineer dispenser dispenser/gun destruction, basically anything you find too slow and repetitive. But there's nothing stopping you from programming simple movements, like a rocket jump.

Because the Quake developers were all control freaks :D

I can't find the original Quake TF scripts, but this is Team Fortress Classic:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/millard1/Team Fortress Classic - Newbies Guide/www.users.on.net/_garsha/binds_aliases_standard.html

Code:
Rocket Jump
For a player just learning how to move along, this rocket jump script might prove useful. I myself used one similar to this in Quake Team Fortress until I got good enough to do it without - which is better since you can do more varrients once you have the basic down. // Rocket Jump
alias rjump "+jump;+attack;wait;-attack;-jump"
alias +rocketjump "cl_pitchspeed 9999;+lookdown;wait;+speed;+forward;rjump;-forward;-speed"
alias -rocketjump "-lookdown;centerview;cl_pitchspeed 150"

bind x "rjump"

Not sure if these are allowed in today's games, but I know I still used Engineer scripts on Team Fortress 2 (cause the build tool is so clunky). So the option is certainly still there.

But you till need to be able to react to the rocket jump quickly to take advantage of it. And the script won't be perfect on uneven ground, so it's still some mastery required.

but.. but.. I can plug a MnK into my console? Bwahahaha...

There have been adapters for a while now to allow consoles to use keyboard and mouse. It wasn't pretty at first, but it is very doable now. Check out the Xim 4.

LOL, I remember making a script to space bar toggle zoom in/out for the sniper using incremental FOV changes and wait commands in Quake Team Fortress. Rocket jumping was all manual though, I can't imagine using a cookie cutter script for that.

Rocket Jump Ninja also does the best, in my opinion, mouse reviews.

The last line made me chortle... imagine if they opened up cross console/PC multiplayer. It'd be a slaughter.

They would just rent artificial aiming or aim junkies.

Then that little voice in the back of my head says, they don't sell their taint to console players dumb ass.

You just reminded me of StoogeBot.
Unfortunately, there is a market for console cheating in the form of modified controllers.

Rocket jumping is a must have feature for Quake no matter the version. I only wish it were included in many other games. Tried it in Borderlands 1 and 2. In either game it either puts me into FFYL or depletes my shield and most of my health. :(

While that's true, we still have developers talking out both sides of their mouth when the subject of cross platform play comes up.

1) Encoded aim help in most AAA console games would put PC players at a disadvantage *fakes a sneeze and chuckes*
2) PC players have a distinct advantage over console players with the MnK versus the typical console controller. (Minus encoded aim help)
3) Complexity of server management being awkward due to platform differences. (Develop a solution to your self generated problem oh wise developer)

It would seem the first two arguments cancel one another out and the PC and modern console should be on an equal-to-near-equal footing if developers would create a uniform set of code for handling server connection and match management, preferably with a GUI/non-GUI interface for console and PC, to bring it all together.

It's not like any developer is hosting their own matches anymore as they seem to be moving back to client based and player supported dedicated hosting for many newer titles. Enable the ability for cross platform matches and let the players decide for themselves whether they'd like matches with similar or rival platforms.

Take damage to gain advantage...pretty much critical thinking skills and a life as a lesson 101 class rolled into one split second decision.

In Latin ( you know, where EL BURRO is from ) there is a word which describes a concept we have no English equivalent for. That word is 'ludus', it means ( in English reckoning ) both SCHOOL and GAME at the same time. Thus all life experiences in that essence world view are 'play' and should aspire to fun and learning being one and the same.

Why is mario cart ( n64 ) fun? because the npc's cheat to keep the game engaging (if sometimes unwinnable ( fucking princess peach ) ) . It's an interesting exposition of the human condition when one considers these together.

here is an interesting example:

back in the day of dial-up, when UT2004 was new and hot, a team of random mates was thrown together in an onslaught match. We were getting the living shit kicked out of us, but it quickly became apparent the opposing team was A) a team , and B) cheating (they could spawn at a node under attack with full armor , full health and all weapons ) . We were beaten back to no nodes and desperately defending the main base core , defeat seemed imminent, and one of our team dropped out . As an experiment I typed out to the open ( both teams ) channel ( voice was not a bandwidth available option back then for those too young to remember ) something like this:

"Don't quit...they may be cheating, but if that is the case make them pay for every inch of ground they take in their own blood until the grass runs red with it . Make the defense of this base so epic that it will become legendary and make even cheaters think twice about coming against you ever. now fight.

We turned the tide and won the match..fucking epic.

Rocket jump is LUDUS, as much as victory from the jaws of defeat is ; satisfaction comes from that DNA ingrained thread to never quit. It's why casino's exist and the problem is reduced to: how does one produce a game that is both school and game to both experienced and inexperienced at the same time.

So far the corporate answer to this seems to be the 'SARK METHOD' , i.e. "teach them the standard sub-standard training ((sic) ham fisted controls) and then blow them away"

but.. but.. I can plug a MnK into my console? Bwahahaha...

There's been talk about this, but I don't think anyone's pulled the trigger on it yet. Even the PS3 had full support for mouse and keyboard 10 years ago, but just not in games. If anything I think the xbox might be the first one to do this, simply because of the Windows ties with their games. If you're already building a multi platform game for PC and Xbox you've done the work to support KB/M not only from a control standpoint, but also from a menu and help stand point. You can get away dealing with screen prompts telling you to hit the R1 button that doesn't exist on your keyboard if you are the one getting around the limitation, but I don't think that would fly for the average user. On the PC all of work is already being done to support both KB/M and controller, so if really shouldn't be difficult for the Xbox to do the same.

Wait, you were still on dial up in 2004?

March 2006 was when i hung up my dialup boots. And i was LUCKY it was that early (4.6km of copper plus a RIM cabinet meant all the moons aligned for that miracle).

Just in time for the XBOX 360 launch. Fun times.

I still raped LPB's in Quake though. But damn it was deff a disadvantage as you'd have to operate at 100% spacial awareness & concentration and work hard to just break even!

Much like COD:MW3 now due to its broken network code and hit detection (lag compensation) only back then i had a chance as skill would help, now you can drill half a mag into someone and they'll turn around and do you in with 2 bullets.

The sad part to all this? Only left ADSL in APR 2016.... and it was only 1.5mbit! Thankfully on 50/20 fixed wireless now. But it should have been 100/40 FTTP (no thanks to the corrupt government we have in AUS).

Rocket jumping in quake was so fun! Great skill to have and as a few have mentioned... its not a free course of action. Made it so much better.
