n00b question switching harddrives

is this possible?

exchanging harddrives from two computers and having them run as if nothing happened...

trying to phrase this good

PC 1 with A Harddrive
PC 2 with B Harddrive
switch harddrives

PC 1 Run with B harddrive including all settings and Operating System
vice versa
all this without having to format the disks?

sorry, not a chance in hell unless the machines were exactly identical in hardware, same motherboard, same brand of cpu, memory configuration might not matter, same add on cards if any are installed. etc etc.

If its the same exact motherboard in both machines it could be done with minor annoynaces, but basically you are looking to hose both machines.

If I were to try such a thing, I would go into hardware manager of both machines and remove ALL devices video, network, sound basically everything it would let me.

I would set both machines bios to boot from CD.

swap the drives and boot from the windows original CD, go thru the options like It was a new install and where its ask if you want to repair an existing install say yes. this will preserve your progams games, data and most settings.

Pray and sprikle chicken blood in a circle around the machines while chanting the lyrics to Inagodadvida.

if it will boot from the harddrive and load windows (you are a lucky guy) install the motherboard drivers for all the devices and run windows update. do not allow windows to install any hardware updates.

install the video driver.

pray some more that the thing acts properly and doents do weird BSD etc from now on.
