Gonna pair it with two E5640 (32nm quad core 2.66ghz, 12MB cache)

If I can hit a 191 BLCK with the 21x turbo multiplier I will be at 4ghz.

Vaulter, Kendrak, what settings did you use to get your highest BLCK so far?

Now that you have yours set up, what would you recommend for cooling?

I have one TRUE and one CM Hyper 212 already. I was planning on buying another Hyper 212 but I'm a bit worried that it would hold me back in my push for 4ghz.

Welcome to the club!

We are both using true spirts. I'm waiting on my second one to show up.

I will get to turn mine back on on Friday when I get my cooling worked out.

Congrats!!

Another person to be jealous off :D :D

Enjoy the board as have I!
I think I had some memory instability at the beginning with my OCZ Reapers (not sure if it was due to the memory not being on the compatibility list, or just my overclock.)
Other than that it has been a great machine!

I actually have a suspicion that the Xeon memory controller is a bit more picky.

My i7 rig has always used Corsair XMS3 cas 8 1600mhz ddr3...the most compatible memory in the world right? Nope.

I have been testing one of the Xeons In my X58-UD5, and it will not post at all with the Corsairs in there. Luckily, I have 4gb of OCZ in my X6 rig, and the board posts fine with that. Once I manually set the memory settings, the Corsair works fine. Go figure.

I think I'll give the CM Hyper 212 a whirl. I hope I don't regret not buying better cooling down the road.

I put my memory at 1066, qpi to the lowest. Everything else is auto at 187 now. There's a guide somewhere from the man who built the board if you go over 188 ish, look around evga forums, I havnt found it yet

stick with the TRUEs, and you should have great temps with those 32nm quads.

Do you have a way to check power draw while folding? I'm curious the difference between mine and yours

and if you don't mind, what did you spend on the CPUs?

Yea I have a kill a watt that I will be using.

Comparing my xeons to my i7 920, Everest reports the xeons definitely use less power. My 920 at 3.8ghz reported power usage around 100W, but the xeon at 4.2ghz only pulled around 90W, at least according to the software.

I spent $400 apiece for the CPUs. I know a guy on these forums that has a bunch of ES chips, but I'm not sure he wants that info publicly known. PM me if you want his name. He's got these and a lot of the hex core chips, but he still wants around $1000-$1500 apiece for those.

I'm on ES's too but I spent 400 for the pair of 5530's, last gen but still good

if you wanna pm me that would be fine for future upgrades tho, thanks!

Not q bad price tho for that chip

I spend $2k on mine, of course they are dual 6 cores. I remember seeing that post about going above 187 bclk, but can't find the post now.

I'm about to go over and ask them to sticky it lol

The end of skynet being the fastest rig on [H] :(

ah but the pioneers like you make the rest of us possible :)

Congrats on your new mobo man! Congrats on your dual 6 packs!

Can't wait to see the numbers you will be putting on as I believe Parja and Clayton are the only other teammates who have dual hexcores right now. I personally can't believe how much of a difference overclocking makes in the performance of these Nehalem and Nehalem EX cpus...........

I think I need to sell all three of my folding rigs and just build me an SR-2. The SR-2's with Six Packs are making more than double what I am with 3 machines, 2 Quad core AMD's and a dual core AMD. Damn it all!!!. I'm going now to start pricing everything !.
:D Good for the [H]orde though! :D

Fold On Brethren
Fish

Just Clayton, parja is on another team, but it is good that the top 3 teams are all swapping advice and helping out. That's the way things should be, I can't wait to help some guys at mpc, but I still can't find that damn guide on evga, I know it's there tho, they all talk about it, If parja lurks this, can you point that out? Hopefully the big dogs can all keep playing nice like this

it's funny, atlas could sell his racks of like 50 gpus and replace it with 4-5 rigs, and save shitloads on power

I've thought about Atlas buying SR2s before too. I wonder if he's at all considered it for cost and maintenance reasons.

Ahh, I thought that Parja was back on our team or something like that. I remember that he supposedly left us for eVGA and thought he came back. Good to see though as competition is fun, and we all started folding because of the science.

I've actually wondered about Mr. Tigerbitten. I think I read a while back that he is running like 21 GPU clients and 6-7 bigadv rigs to average roughly 250k ppd while using 2500 or 3500kw/h of juice. If he were to consolidate to a couple of SR2 with hex cores, the savings in electricity would be incredible!

I wouldn't be surprised if he does that once he gets back from vacation (assuming there are any SR-2 boards left for him to buy).

Well my PPD is somewhat off I believe. I still can't get any -bigadv on my windows client so I'm using -advmethods and -smp 24. It showed my PPD starting at 40k, and then after 25% it's down to 22k PPD. My O/C is at 3.8GHz on everything. I thought I'd be running faster than that.

What are you using to monitor F@H?

I (and a lot of others) use FHM.net. Do a search in the DC forum and you should be able to find a link for it.

I'm not sure why you aren't getting any -bigadv wu. I just got one about 20 minutes ago. Took 5 tries, but I got one.

If you can't get -bigadv WUs, try removing the -advmethods flag. That did it for me.

Yeah when I was trying it I would remove the -advmethods flag and only use the -bigadv and -smp flags. Fnally got one. My SR-2 is telling me it's going to take 2 days to complete this. I think something isn't right with my 3.8GHz O/C.

It looks like I'm running project P2684. I wonder if my rig is supposed to do this quicker than two days?

Your RAM speed is hurting you a bit. If you could run it at close to 1600 you'd cut your TPF nicely.

My rig running 2x GPU clients is getting 32min TPF. Which works out to 2days 5 hours per WU. You should be doing MUCH better than that.

is two days expected for my 24 threads running against it. I thought I saw a guy with a 980x run it in 2~2.5 days.

I'm guessing that was the old -bigadv.

These new buggers run with higher TPF and are a bit lower in the ppd than the 'ol A2 -bigadv.

You did see a guy running a 980x....ME. Like I said my 12 threads finish a WU in 2 days 5 hours give or take an hour or so.

Your 24 threads should be doing much better than my 12 thread 980x.

/clears throat and points at signature.

I'm not clocked as high as DooKey since I'm running mine on air but you should definitely be getting done in less than 2.5 days. Current run time for me is looking like 2 days 9 hours.

No problem.

It's shamino's "SR2 OC BIOS Template" thread in the SR-2 forum.

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=268280

Basically, you'll typically need 1.4V or better on VTT and IOH to get over the 190 BCLK hump.

Your memory is running way slow. I'm guessing that's what's holding you back...way back.

Also, enable SpeedStep in your BIOS. That'll unlock TurboMode so you can jack your X5650s up to a 22x multi so you don't need as much BCLK. Just make sure you disable C-STATE and it won't throttle your CPUs.

For reference, I'm running mine at 185x22 (4.07GHz) with my memory at a 10x multi (9-9-9-27 timings, IIRC). My TPFs on a 2684 WU are right around 17 minutes, so I'm finishing WUs in about 28 hours for right around 88,000 PPD. You're not running that much slower, so I would expect your numbers to get quite a bit closer to mine with your memory running faster.

Also, what are you running for CPU cooling? Your voltages aren't terribly high, so I wouldn't expect your temps to be quite that high.

I tried using the BIOS template for 4.0 GHz. I missed the part about speedstep but I did everything else in the article.

My ram is 1333 so I have the bios set right now to go down to DDR-800, do you think it would be safe to go with a 1066 BIOS setting?

I'm using two Thermaltake Frios. I think my arctic silver 5 application is botched and that's why I have high temps.

My last estimate was 2 days and 6 hours for my project.

Also I have my uncore set to 9x. I guess that's ok because I hear you can run 1.5x ram speed with the 32nm parts?

I'm RDP'd into my home machine and I restarted the client and the CPU is pegged but my Folding isn't progressing. I tried deleting from the queue, but is there a way to flush my client?

Ok it started to move, but it's still going slow window bigadv. Should I go ahead and shutdown, delete the work directory and restart?
