1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
i want to build a gaming pc, it will also be used for general things like web browsing, movies, music, and schoolwork for the next 5 years or so with some upgrades.
this will be my second custom built pc last one being built in june 2005, it included an
amd a64 3500+ 2.2 ghz single core cpu
gigabyte ga-k8n ultra9 nforce4 motherboard
generic 420 watt psu
geforce 6800gt gpu
2x 512mb ddr1 value ram
120gb SATA 1.5 seagate barracuda 7200rpm

one of the main reasons i built that pc with the help of a dear bud was to be able to play the up and coming Battlefield 2 maxed out, i was almost kinda able to.
that build including a case, mouse, keyboard, and windows xp home edition was about $1200.

Im hoping this new build will be able to max out Battlefield 3 when released with only a ram and maybe video upgrade!!!
Im pretty sure BF3 was announced with a beta coming within a year. Also for school work.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
my original budget was $700 but ive decided on $900 USD, not including tax or shipping.
3) Where do you live?
im from southwestern CT in the United States
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
im looking for a mid sized tower pc, i started with this amd build on newegg

i read that the gtx465 is a faliure so im willing to downgrade to a 460 or upgrade to a 470, i need a video card that will stand up through time and i really want mafia 2 for free!!

i was also looking for the highest clocked 4 core amd (amd for value) cpu i could find which was the x4 970 at 3.5ghz, but ive decided on the x6 1090t 3.2 ghz,
future proof?!
intel?!
hoping i can cover all of that with my new $900 budget + or - $50 to $100.

ive got 4 gigs or ram in that build, was thinking of goin 8 but im sticking to 4, i can always add more later when BF3 is out.
i decided on that pair of 2gb ddr3 sticks because it was one of the few compatible sticks listed on the motherboard manufacturers page being sold at newegg, they seem like good sticks.

im sure i can manage with that samgsung 500gb hard drive, i was using a 120gb hd on my last pc before it crapped out on me not to long ago and i never really had space issues.
The psu also looks like a good piece, its 650 watts and sli/crossfire ready it seems, should be able to power everything and then some for a couple of years at the least.
i also plan on buying a copy of windows 7 home premium for $100

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Might throw in my old 120gb SATA 1.5 drive for the extra space its an older drive, but will it impact the performance of the rest of my system? it would be used as a storage drive.
6) Will you be overclocking?
potentially a year or 2 later.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
ive got my good ol trusty sony trinitron 19" crt at 1280x1024 :p
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
within a month, still doing research and saving up the cash.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
sli/crossfire would be nice for the future, usb 3.0 would be nice, sata 6.0 would be nice but is it worth it?
im planning on purchasing a sata 3 drive for now, it dosent seem that the sata 6 drives in the same price range offer any advantage.
it seems to be beneficial only when using raid, will that change in the future with new drives?
raid would also be a cool feature to have keeping the future in mind.
the AM3 platform seems like a good choice, is amd coming out with next gen chips using the AM3?
does chipset choice matter much?
does a board with 2 pcie16x slots 1 running at 16x and the other at 4x make much difference versus another board with one pcie16x slot at 16x and the other at 8x or even one with both slots at full 16x for sli/corssfire?
will my old sata 1.5 drive be compatible with a sata 3 or 6 slot?
does being able to run stock ddr3 at 1600 make a noticeable difference from 1333 since both are about the same price, and most mobos handle both?
or even OC speeds of 1866 and 2000+?
i remember running ram in dual channel being an issue back in 2005 on my amd board if i put in more than just 2 512 sticks in, think if i put 2 1gb sticks it would still run in dual but at slower speeds, and if i populated all 4 slots the ram would not run in dual and would also slow down.
is any of that still an issue? i will probably be upgrading from 2x 2gb ddr3 sticks to 4x 2gb sticks in the future.
will i have to upgrade to 2 4gb sticks instead to remain running in dual mode or will 4x 2gb sticks work in dual mode full speed?

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
No, but i plan on buying a copy of windows 7 home premium, was thinking of getting the 64 bit version, is that cool? and will i need anything more than home premium for gaming and general computing?

a few final questions,
would a switch to intel be worth it in the long run for my price range, considering what i will be able to afford now and any potential future upgrades 2+ years down the road?
does the 6 core amd cpu stand up to intel cpus in the same or higher price range?
i know it will loose to intel's 6 core but that 3-4x the price!

is a sata 6.0 drive in the same price range worth it or should i stick to the sata3 samsung spinpoint?
is a small SSD (30-60gb) worth it for my budget as an os/primary drive along with a big sata drive for extra storage? should i just stick to mechanical drives?

is the jump from the phenom2 x4 to x6 worth it? $100 extra, similar clock clock speeds, 3.4-3.5ghz vs 3.2ghz for the best x6

is nvidia the way to go for a gpu? they seem to be on top at the moment with the gtx400 line(faster tesselation? dx11), a 470 seems real sweet!

is the 650 watt psu i selected good enough to run all of this including the gtx470 potentially in sli sometime in the future or am i better off with something else?

and the motherboard i selected comes with a good amount of features for the price, my last mobo was a gigabyte and it served me well, good choice?

that seems to be it,
sorry for the long read hope you guys can guide me in the right direction!

1. If you're close to a Microcenter, I'd consider a i5 750 build since i5 750s are like 160$ from there. It'll cost the same and bit be a bit better. If you don't then, I wouldn't sweat it. It doesn't really matter that much with gaming.

2. That Coolermaster case only has 1 fan. Since you're running modern hardware and want the possiblity of GTX 470 SLI I'd get a case with better cooling.
Lian Li K60B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112247&Tpk=k60b
This has 2 120mm and 2 140mm fans along with tool-less mounting for PCI slots, 5.25" bays, and hard drives. It's still pretty cheap at 79.99$

3. No reason to go 8GB ram.

4. If you want to SLI 470 in the future, I'd at least get a Corsair TX 750.

5. PCI 16x, 4x etc doesn't really matter unless you're running humongous eyefinity resolutions and even then it doesn't really matter that much.

6. A SSD really would be worth it if you can squeeze it into your budget. An Intel X25-M would be good.

8. 5850s are still good buys along with GTX 460s. What resolution are you currently playing games at?

Goddamn that's a lot of questions. All right, I'm just gonna mix and match some questions and answers here:

i read that the gtx465 is a faliure so im willing to downgrade to a 460 or upgrade to a 470, i need a video car that will stand up through time and i really want mafia 2 for free!!
....

For your small resolution, even the $140 HD 5770 would be enough. However, I understand that you may want to go a little overkill on this. As such, right now the best ~$200 ish card right now is the GTX 460. The best $150-ish card is the HD 5770. I would not recommend going higher than the GTX 460 in terms of price for that low resolution.

However do note that AMD is releasing new GPUs in roughly 3-4 weeks from now. Those new AMD cards may influence the pricing of current Nvidia and AMD GPUs or will be better buys for the money. Either way, I'd recommend holding off on worring about the GPU until the release of those new AMD GPUs.

i was also looking for the highest clocked 4 core amd (amd for value) cpu i could find which was the x4 970 at 3.5ghz, but ive decided on the x6 1090t 3.2 ghz,

Considering your budget, you are better off with the Core i5 750 CPU route. It'll provide more gaming performance than the X4 970 or the X6 1090T. A Core i5 750 move will only be about $50 more give or take.

Some extre info:
- The Phenom II 965BE is a not so good choice for the money. It's $20 more than the Phenom II 955 BE but only 200Mhz faster. No way are you gonna notice $20 worth of difference from a 200Mhz clock speed increase.
- The Phenom II X6 1090T is an even worse buy than the 965BE since it's $100 more than the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T yet is only 400Mhz faster. $100 for a 400Mhz is a piss poor deal.
- For gaming, there's really no difference beween the Phenom II 955BE and the Phenom II 1055T.
- The Intel Core i5 750 outperforms the similarily priced Phenom II X6 1005T in games.

Might throw in my old 120gb SATA 1.5 drive for the extra space its an older drive, but will it impact the performance of the rest of my system? it would be used as a storage drive.

It won't impact the performance as long as it's only a storage drive. Just don't install any games or apps on that drive.

sli/crossfire would be nice for the future, usb 3.0 would be nice, sata 6.0 would be nice but is it worth it?

SATA 6Gb/s isn't worth it unless you're planning on getting a SSD in the future.

is amd coming out with next gen chips using the AM3?
No. AMD's next CPUs will be using AM3nr or AM3+ or whatever the hell it is. Either way, AMD's new CPUs will be using a newer socket. In addition, there's no confirmation any more that those new AMD CPUs will actually work with current socket AM3 motherboards.

does chipset choice matter much?
Depends on the features you want.

does a board with 2 pcie16x slots 1 running at 16x and the other at 4x make much difference versus another board with one pcie16x slot at 16x and the other at 8x or even one with both slots at full 16x for sli/corssfire
Not much difference.
will my old sata 1.5 drive be compatible with a sata 3 or 6 slot?
Yes.

does being able to run stock ddr3 at 1600 make a noticeable difference from 1333 since both are about the same price, and most mobos handle both?
or even OC speeds of 1866 and 2000+?
If you're not overclocking, there's really no noticeable difference between DDR3 1333 and DDR3 1600 RAM. Even if you are overclocking, the highest RAM speed you'll ever need for either AMD or Intel Core i5 750 is DDR3 1600 RAM.
i remember running ram in dual channel being an issue back in 2005 on my amd board if i put in more than just 2 512 sticks in, think if i put 2 1gb sticks it would still run in dual but at slower speeds, and if i populated all 4 slots the ram would not run in dual and would also slow down.

will i have to upgrade to 2 4gb sticks instead to remain running in dual mode or will 4x 2gb sticks work in dual mode fulls peed?
No longer an issue. 4 x 2GB sticks of RAM will work in full speed.

No, but i plan on buying a copy of windows 7 home premium, was thinking of getting the 64 bit version, is that cool? and will i need anything more than home premium for gaming and general computing?
The 64bit version is cool. Home Premium is all that you need for gaming and general computing

is a sata 6.0 drive in the same price range worth it or should i stick to the sata3 samsung spinpoint?
There's really no difference between a SATA 6Gb/s and SATA 3Gb/s hard drive. SATA 6Gb/s really only matters if you're using a SSD. For regular hard drives, it doesn't matter. So yeah, stick with the Samsung.
is a small SSD (30-60gb) worth it for my budget as an os/primary drive along with a big sata drive for extra storage? should i just stick to mechanical drives?
Stick to mechanical drives.

is the 650 watt psu i selected good enough to run all of this including the gtx470 potentially in sli sometime in the future am i better off with something else?
It's more than enough for a GTX 470. The Corsair 650TX is an excellent choice.
and the motherboard i selected comes with good amount of features for the price, my last mobo was a gigabyte and it served me well, good choice?
The mobo you chose is good but you're now gonna have to ditch it since you're probably gonna go for an Intel setup.

Now for an Intel setup, I recommend the following:
$360 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU + Asus P7P55D-E Pro Intel P55 ATX Motherboard Combo
$87 - G.Skill Ripjaw Series F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
---
Total: $447 plus tax and shipping

Supports both Crossfire and SLI should you ever upgrade your monitor to a 23" or larger. For your small res, Crossfire and SLI would be a waste.

you guys are great :p
thx for the case suggestion i was just looking at lian li cases they look neat

so i guess im going intel!
no hyper threading? i read that stuff is good stuff, not the best stuff but good stuff!
i7's not worth goin up to 250-300$ for the cpu?

im probably gonna settle for the gtx470, is 1280x1024 really that small?

1280x1024 is really that small by today's standards. The GTX 470 is more at home at 1920x1200.

And the performance improvement of the i7 over the i5 is nowhere near large enough to justify spending that much more money. In fact, I found the biggest reason to go i7 to be if I'm going to perform a lot of heavy-duty video editing, especially with tough-to-handle AVCHD footage.

i see, i could put that money to use elsewhere
HT seems so cool tho =/

that i5 and asus board combo seems nice, but is there a reason to spend that much on the mobo?

that i5 and asus board combo seems nice, but is there a reason to spend that much on the mobo?

The mobo is $180 by itself because you do need to spend that much if you want both SATA 6 Gbps and USB 3.0 controllers onboard and have dual SLI or CrossFire craphics cards running at x8/x8 rather than the imbalanced x16/x2 mode (yes, the cheaper board is technically x16/x4 but the x4 slot is run off of the P55's artificially-restricted-to-half-bandwidth PCI-e controller, making the overall bandwidth effectively only x2 - and then, that cheaper mobo does not support SLI at all, only CrossFire) of some cheaper boards with both SATA 6 Gbps and USB 3.0 controllers onboard.

forgot to mention after some thought i will likely never be using SLI/crossfire on this new system

what is a good motherboard for the lga1156 cpu type with no sli?

This is a good combo:
$285 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU + Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55 mATX Motherboard Combo

It's a start but there's defintely room for improvement.

Go for this HDD + PSU combo for a better value:
$150 - Corsair 650TX 650W PSU + Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive Combo

Hold off on the GPU for now and see what AMD's new GPUs bring to the table when the NDA on them is lifted on Friday. However, even without factoring in AMD's new GPUs, that GTX 460 is a bit overpriced at $250 considering that the faster HD 5850 is the same price. So either drop down to a more cost-effective GTX 460 at around $220 or go up to a HD 5850.

Also, noted earlier by E4g1e, for the usage scenario that you described, a Core i7 CPU simply is not cost-effective despite your increased budget. You're not doing ANYTHING that would require the Core i7 CPU.

You're better off with this setups:
$285 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU + Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 Intel P55 ATX Motherboard Combo

or

$195 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU
$140 - Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 ATX Motherboard
----
Total $335 plus tax and shipping

If you're gonna be stubborn about the Core i7, at least get a better setup than tha like the following:
$400 - Intel Core i7 860 CPU + Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 ATX Motherboard Combo

Better featured mobo and similar performing CPU for $15 less.

Also how are you getting the GS-550 for free?

the free psu comes with the case

i think in the long run 3-5years the i7 will be a better choice

the gtx460 is 229 after mir theres another one im willing to get, the non superclocked edition that 219 after mir

edit, i had that hd combo for the 1tb spinpoint drive but i decided on the 500 to get another 500gig later for raid maybe, along with another 4 gb of ram
im goin to be using a 120gb older sata 1.5 drive for storage

i think in the long run 3-5years the i7 will be a better choice
Ok then, your money. At least go for the combo I listed. It's not as big of a waste of money as the setup you posted.

the gtx460 is 229 after mir theres another one im willing to get, the non superclocked edition that 219 after mir

We generally don't factor in MIR in this part of the forum. They're not a surefire discount. But if you're gonna play the rebate card, that GTX 460 is still too expensive at $220 and $230 AR because you can get this HD 5850 for $200 AR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127500

Even at the pre-rebate price of $255, that MSI HD 5850 is still a better buy than the $250 GTX 460. So regradless of whether or you're factoring in rebates or not, the HD 5850 is still better buy in this case.

edit, i had that hd combo for the 1tb spinpoint drive but i decided on the 500 to get another 500gig later for raid maybe, along with another 4 gb of ram

What's stopping you from getting tow of those 1TB drives in RAID 0?

fwiw I'd go intel the i5's and i7s are clock for clock faster but you might not need that. Then again, the AMD side of things might with less socket changes be better for you in that you'll be able to upgrade down the line. As for ati's cards with how bad nvidia is meddling with games 460SLI would be a sick choice.

Actually, AMD won't be any more "future-proof" than Intel. You see, the new Bulldozer-derived CPUs coming sometime next year will not be compatible with current AM3 motherboards. This means that the new CPUs coming next year will not work at all with current AM3 motherboards even if the CPU itself physically fits the socket. Thus, whether you're buying AMD or Intel, you've just bought yourself a lame-duck platform since no new worthwhile CPUs will be coming out for any of the current desktop CPU sockets until they all go EOL.

i think in the long run 3-5years the i7 will be a better choice

Well, the currently available i7 CPUs would have gotten you only about an extra month or two of useful life compared to an i5 CPU (as been repeatedly noted by Danny).

yeah i know i just got a 1156 mobo and a i5 750...but it should when OC'd be decent for a while until the socket changes settle down

thx for all the help guys
one quick question, is the asus sabertooth 55i compatible with the ram listed G.skill 2x2gb F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK
it seems to be on the the mobo manufacturers ram qvl but ive read the list isnt too accurate

If the exact model is on the manufacturer's list then it's good. There's also a ton of RAM that will work with most boards that isn't on the manufacturer's list. Just make sure it's the same specs (pin number, etc)

hey guys, everything has been ordered should be here any one of these days

the $250 460gtx dropped to $220 and i received a $30 refund, it also has a 10$ mir
