My ps3 INSTALLS slow

i recently formatted my ps3, ever since it has been installing really slow.
it's not the download! but the install, people keeps telling me that it might be my internet connection and that's why you have to focus on the install not the download like all the others have been doing..
anywho, i made a quick format and a software recovery and it downloads fine but installs really really slow. i then tried to format and all again but with no help so last night i went for a full format, it took med 18 hours and 30 minutes but didn't fix the problem, right now im installing Dead space, it's 8gb and now it has been installing for 40 minutes and it's on 44%. when it's done installing it runs with no problems.
I just can't seem to find the problem, i need to install quite a few games and some of them are really big and it's just a pain in the *** to use 2-3 hours on installing one single game, can anybody help?

no, it's the HDD that came with it and it has always been working with no problem.

Try unplugging your ps3 while it's on. When you reboot it will give you the option to check the hard drive.

have done that a couple times, it doesn't fix anything :S

You could try taking the hard drive out and hooking up into a computer and running the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic test on it.

Not really just google how to remove your ps3 hard drive it shouldnt be that difficult. Look at the brand of the hard drive then go the the manufactures website and look for diagnostic cd iso for testing your hard drive you should be able to download and burn to a disc (use imgburn or something). Turn off your computer and open your case and unplug your hard drive and plug up the ps3 hard drive (If your computer isn't ancient it should have the right connectors sata not ide). Turn on the computer and insert the cd you burned (you may have to change the boot order in the bios or hit one of the F# keys to manually boot to the cd). If the test doesn't detect the drive you may need to change the hard drive mode in the bios from sata to ide or raid to ide or vise versa (make sure you change it back to what ever it was when you hook up your pc hard drive or you will bluescreen).

You want to restore the fast write functionality of the hard drive? Pull it out of the system and attach it to your PC, download Active@ KillDisk, and write zero's to the entire drive. Plug it back in and let the PS3 do it's setup stuff, then try installing games. I bet it will fly.

My 160gb slim is the same way... i thought it was normal.


Takes for ***king ever to install a 14gb game.

+1 My 160gb PS3 does take awhile to install even small files.

The fix: Install a 256gb SSD

Make sure it has cache onboard. Don't need it to be super fast as PS3 only has Sata 1 port

I think only 5400rpm drives are installed by default, could also upgrade to a 7200rpm mechanical drive. I wonder if they have kits where you could hookup a external Velociraptor drive? :evilgrin:

had the same issue with my slim and a 320GB hdd, turned out that the controller on the drive died. replaced hdd with a new one and install times are back to normal....

ugrading to a 7200prm drive makes little difference overall compared to 5400.....

When I upgraded my PS3's hard drive the first time, I had this issue too. Pulled the drive out, did a deep scan, and it had tons of bad sectors. RMA'd the drive, and the install times got much better. If your install times are taking a while, I'd suspect a failing drive.

Make sure you are not downloading stuff off PSN when installing a game as its doing both read/write and it slows down the process. But sounds like your hdd is bad but I've never installed an 8gb game on the drive. 4gb at most for data cache and that took 10-15 mins tops.
