Hey all, I know these threads probably come up all the time... however, I am looking for opinions on the build listed below. I tried to link my newegg wishlist but it's not working right now.

This machine will be used for heavy gaming, but it's also going to be my main computer, so other more mundane tasks will also be performed. I'm not really looking at video encoding or heavy photoshop work, though.

Budget is below $2000. Obviously, anything that can reduce the cost is welcome. I've been out of the computer building scene for a good 5 years so these components are what I came up with after some initial research. I appreciate any advice you can give.

Proc: $279.99
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920

Mobo: $299.99
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Video: $449.99
HIS H587F1GDG Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card w/ATI Eyefinity

RAM: $209.99
G.SKILL Trident 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9T-6GBTD

HD: $394.00
OCZ Vertex LE (Limited Edition) OCZSSD2-1VTXLE100G 2.5" 100GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Optical drive: $109.99
ASUS Blu-ray Drive SATA Model BC-08B1ST

PSU: $119.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-650HX 650W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Case: $99.99

In addition to the SSD drive, I already own a 1TB drive that I will use for additional storage.

Total cost right now: $1,963.93

Make the following changes:
$210 - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 ATX Motherboard
$170 - G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$400 - XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB PCI-E Video Card

The above changes will shave off $170 but offer the EXACT same performance. In addition, XFX has far better customer support and warranty than HIS.

if you are going to spend $400 on SSD you might as well raid0 two intel x25-m g2 80gb's or a single 160gb. Also +1 to Danny's suggestions for gpu/ram/mobo.

Spending $400 on an SSD does make me somewhat uncomfortable. Thanks for the suggestions thus far, the gpu/ram/mobo suggestion is perfect, those are the kind of savings I'm looking for.

Yeah now that I think about it, a single Intel 80GB SSD would definitely be a better buy and would shave off another $175.

With the proposed changes, total is now $1610. Not too shabby. Even lower if I can get an open box X25-M from newegg. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Also, is that Corsair 650w PSU going to be adequate? I'm willing to spend more on it if neccessary as I'd rather not skimp in the power department. I have no plans to add another GPU or anything like that.

The Corsair 650W will be enough.

The 650W would be more than enough. If you got two X25-M's in RAID0, you'd get great sequential speeds -- not a bad idea if you've got extra cash. I don't, but I still bought a 2nd one, and then some... speed is addicting.

Not to thread hijack but was curious enginurd...how do you feel about the lack of TRIM support with RAID on your x25-m's? Does the performance make up for it?

I actually have X18-M's (G1, so no TRIM even if I pulled them out of the array) in RAID0, and the lack of TRIM hasn't had any noticeable impact in the past 3 months of usage. Then again, I havent been really doing much with my home system lately, just browsing and recording shows (so busy with work :().
