Hey,

This is my first post here... so i'm sorry if i'm posting in the wrong area. Today i got a new computer... it's not actually new but it's better than my last one.

Previously i've been running an AMD K6-3 501mhz with 96mb ram (8mb video shared) and a 10gb hard drive. I basically only played Age of Empires 1 on it... Number 2 would lag in huge battle scenes!

Now i'm running dual Pentium 3 'Tualatins' 1.4GHz @ 1.4GHz... i don't think i need to overclock them. It's also packin 4x1gb ddr2100 on my MSI pro266td motherboard. My video card is an ATI HD2600Pro 512mb AGP and my hard drive is a 500gb ide drive.

Since this computer is a bit of a step up from my last one i was hoping i could play some games on it! what sort of games could i play and at what settings?

Thanks! oh and is it true that these Pentium 3s outperform Pentium 4s?

Regards, Mortagen

Sweet upgrade. :p

IIRC the P3 does outperform the original Willamette core P4s clock for clock.

I'm interested in how well this setup handles games, but I'm not sure what to recommend you try. It would be cool to see it run anything from the last 3 years or so.

Quake 3 engine based games. Unreal 2K4. There is alot out there. your cpu will be a huge bottle neck. Fallout 1-2, and tactics are great.

What size monitor do you have?

Vengance_01 is right. Your CPU may limit you a bit. But we could be wrong. Just play a bloody game!

Hey,

I have a 17" Flat CRT...

Will i be able to play games like Half Like 2, Half Life 2: Episode 2 (which has steeper requirements), battlefield 2 and 2142, oblivion, fear, stalker, most wanted etc. or...

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of setup or simular?

Thanks!

Regards, Mortagen :)

I don't think HL2 will be much if a problem, I run CS:S (same engine) on a 1.8GHz Opty (big difference i know but low speed) but, with the video card and the crap load of RAM you have I dont see much of a problem coming up.

HL2: Yes
HL2: EP2: Maybe
BF2: Yes if you turn down all the settings and keep the resolution at 1024 x 768.
BF2142: See what happens with BF2 first and then decide whether or not the rig can handle BF2142
Oblivion: Turn down the settings. Way down.
Fear: Maybe
Stalker: No Idea
Most Wanted: No idea.

Check out www.srtest.com. It scans your PC and it will show you if your PC meets the minimum requirements for certain game. But check out the site in IE. Firefox and Opera seem to have a problem with that site.

Fear: Doubtful....

Fixed;)

I've got an older P4 3g, 2g ram and an X1950pro 256m and it's un-playable on that machine...

It's running Vista HP 32bit... might be a contributing factor... I don't know, never tried to run it under XP....

LOL!

I think it may have been a Vista thing because I've got an P4 2.53ghz, 1.5GB RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro that ran that game fine at low settings at 1024 x 768. Or was it 1280 x 1024? I forget.

Yeah... and I just ran the test in link you provided and it seems that that system easily surpasses the the recommended specs for the game.... So maybe it is a Vista issue....

Maybe you had a bunch of apps running the background? Like AIM, music, AV (Norton),

None... and I use NOD32 exclusively....cats 7.8 and CCC... it's odd...

I don't really game all that much, but UT2K4 (obviously) runs really well, and Doom3 with full AA on ultimate settings runs butter smooth... FEAR, on the other hand.... the theatrical scenes are hardly viewable and the game itself is so slow it's dizzying....

You may want to hit up the PC Gaming Subforum under General Gaming and look around if anyone else is having the same problem as you. Or do some googling.

Thanks... will do...

And OP, sorry about the little thread jack there... and congrats on the new rig:)
