What is "the least amount of money"? Tell us how much you have to spend and Im sure we can help you.

Well since you did not give us a budget I just decided to keep it under $550. This is a basic system that I just put together in a few min.

MB - ASUS A7N8X-X Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 400 ATX AMD Motherboard $66.00

CPU - AMD Mobile Athlon XP-M 2500+ (45W) Barton 266MHz FSB Socket A Processor
Model AXMH2500FQQ4C - OEM $88.00

Video Card - SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600XT 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card 105.00

Ram - Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory $78.99

Case/PSU - Antec Solution SLK3700AMB Metallic bronze Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 350W Power Supply $59.00

HDD - HITACHI Deskstar 7K80 HDS728080PLAT20 -0A30210 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM $59.00

Heatsink/Fan - THERMALTAKE Extreme Volcano 12 80mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan $34.99

CDRW - Toshiba America SR-M8102 BLK CD/DVD Burner $25.00

Since you said they are 12 and you would be upgrading them to a more powerful system later on. I tried to keep it cheap but still give it the ability to play HL2 and Doom 3 at decent settings. Hope this helps.

Price?
AMD/Intel?
ATI/nVidia?
What is their current rig, we can really help you if you tell us that. Is the case/PSU reusable? How about the optical drive? Hard Drive?

40 GB or 80 GB

CPU - A64 3000+ s939 - $145
MB - Chaintech VNF4/Ultra - $85
Vid Card - Nvidia 6600GT PCI-E - $170
1GB (2x512) "Value" RAM - $85
WinXP Home - $90
DVD+RW drive - $55

I know you like Intel, but the A64's are better for games which is what you said they wanted it for.

very true, but you might wanna spend mabey a little extra to get a quality psu, as with that setup, a no-name brand psu will not work too great.

is it just me, or is everyone missing the fact that a system like this would require something more than a pos no name psu?

Uhhhh...Antec makes good PSUs. Seriously, how much power does a 3000+ with a 6600GT need? My power supply calculator says he needs 270 watts max. The 350 Antec with that case should be MORE than enough. I mean, do you really think a 6-year-old is overclocking?

a decent 350 antec for 50 bucks would do now. Upgrade that later. Get a 64bit processor and download the beta version of windows...upgrade that later too.

There you save buckeroos for the better gaming parts.

If you check my sig...I run all of that off a Antec 380 and still have plenty of room to add more hardware. A 350 should be fine (just make sure it's a TruePower and not a SL)

Devil's advocate here..

My Dad just bought 2 new machines for our new office from Dell- pretty decent machines for about 600 bucks apiece. Might give them a look-see. I'll put money on the fact that you can get more bang for the buck out of a Dell machine than a homebrew for your circumstances.

Another thing- he ordered them at about 11:00am on Tuesday.. It was built and shipped by 4:00pm on Tuesday. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

my bad, didnt read that it was a antec psu. I assumed that because it was a case and psu combo, it would just be a nonamer.

I sugest 512mb of GOOD ram.
It's cheaper and can always be upgraded down the road but it will still do fin on todays games and will be lighter on the wallet for the meanwhile.
