My first build

Hey everybody. I'm starting to plan my first build. I've never really been a hardware guy until recently when I took apart my old desktop to try and see if I could upgrade it. It's got a Gigabyte GA-8SIMLH mb with a centrino processor and 512 mb of ddr ram. Needless to say it is SLOW. I'm running windows 7 on it and I've managed to get it to run pretty smoothly by disabling all the visual effects n such. That still doesn't stop the cpu from maxing out constantly but it's enough to stream music and stuff. I'm mainly trying to use it as an always on file server at the moment but I have so many other ideas. Long story short though is that it isn't going to cut it in the long run. You can't even look at youtube videos on it. I was just going to buy a cheap little mb/proc combo and use the current case till I can buy another and then I got to thinking why not go all the way. So I guess this will be my build thread of sorts. I won't have the money for a little while but I can tell you what I'd like to have so far.

Cases- Originally I was really wanting the Thermaltake Armor a90. It looks amazing. I'm a looks guy. It's also not expensive and out of all the cases I've looked at I really only liked it. But then I found what I really want! I found the Asus Vento 3600!!!! I almost died from shear happiness! Some of you may hate it and I know it's not new anymore but I am in love with it! I can't wait to get one. It fulfills my scifi fantasies!

Motherboard/Proc- Good question. I've decided that since I'm going to get a special case I might as well put something special in it. But this can't be too pricey, and when I say pricey i mean it really needs to be under 300 bucks. I know... Not great. But there's got to be something. I'll take any suggestions. To give you an idea of what might work I'll be using the pc for network file hosting, possible light server use, and who knows what else I can come up with. It will be more of an appliance. No gaming or anything extreme.

I always appreciate any input. Thanks guys. Let me know what you think.

Come back when you have the money. Offering advice 2-3 months in advance does you no good. Prices change, new hardware gets released.

Pretty much this^.

There isn't much planning required to do a build, just get what money you have and post that as your budget and then we will create a system built around that budget.

Don't take it the wrong way, we want to help you with your build but it's just too early to tell you what parts you should be looking for. Deals change, prices fluctuate, new hardware is released, its just an ever changing market and in order to get the best bang for your buck waiting until the last minute is usually the best way to go in order to make sure you get the best tech that is out.

Yeah when you do finally get the money to actually build this PC and ask again for help, please answer the stickied "ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FIRST!" so that we can help you better. So far your post doesn't have that much useful info besides a wish to use a cramped, loud, and insufficient cooling case.

alright guys. Thanks. I'll get back to you when the time is right.

Yeah re-evaluate your case choice: The Asus is not worth it at close to $175 to $200 shipped. There are significantly better quality cases out there for less. A few examples:

$80 - Cooler Master RC-690-KKN1-GP ATX Case
$70 - Cooler Master CM690 II ATX Case

Yea, but the ASUS looks like it's from the future and that's really what I care about. I'll check them out though. Thanks.

Trust me you will get over the looks of your case QUICK. Get something that is practical and has good cooling and cable management. Theres a lot of "cool" looking cases that can accomplish this.

while cases are subjective, i just have to say the Asus Vento 3600 is one ugly case, imo, lol. it resembles old skool alienware to me. while looks are important, you should consider all the other stuff danny pointed out, as well as its price, since you're obviously on a budget. look for form and function with style at a price you can afford.

Sup spacegravity4me. I'm kinda in the same boat as you. My last build was in 2006 and I have been waiting since then for my next build. But the case I would recommend would have to a Lian Li, more specifically, the PC-B25F. Its sexy. I have the Rocketfish full tower case and in about a month I will start my mod log. Its gonna be murdered. :)
