Its currently at 2.8ghz on stock vcore with no problems, I want to go higher but this shitty ram cant go past 800mhz, has anyone had any experience with this stepping? is it a decent OCer? I want to know before I buy better ram but ending not being able to put it to use.

It's a SL9SA made in Malaysia... with the L626A 946 stepping.
 
CPU-z should show that processor as a revision B2 which means it is based on the original Conroe core. They are legendary overclockers and with some better memory, 7 X 500 should be possible if your board is willing.

The above Ballistix memory is rated at CL4-4-4 at DDR2-800 speed but it uses the famous Micron D9GMH chips which can run at CL5-5-5 at DDR2-1000, usually without having to increase the voltage from the default of 2.2 volts. That would be perfect for your future super computer! :D

I saw some similar G.Skill at Newegg recently even cheaper which also uses the same highly overclockable chips. Good luck.

Don't let the cheap price fool you. Check out the reviews and the speeds people are getting out of them even at CL4 they go to DDR2-900 and beyond. Send me a PM if you need any help getting the most out of these. My original E6300 on a DS3 ran at 3300 MHz with similar memory at pretty much default voltage for everything.

That's good to hear, I was doing some google searching and saw someguy named "The Pook" got his e6300 L626A to 3.6Ghz.
 
3600 MHz is possible but it all depends on your motherboard and how much time you're willing to put into testing it to make sure it is reliable up here. The Asus P5B Deluxe that I use can go a little over 500 MHz for the FSB reliably but I'm not sure about the DS3. Some have but you need some luck and you need to do some fine tuning to be stable.

3500 MHz is an easier number to shoot for and I'm sure you wouldn't be too disappointed with a number like that out of an 1866 MHz E6300!
 
I was curious so I rebooted my E6400 and set the multi to 7X so I could pretend that it's an E6300 for some quick testing.

That screen shot should encourage you to invest in some decent memory. You get some nice memory bandwidth when your memory and motherboard are running at warp speed.
 
i have an E6300 as of now. 2.8ghz max on pc6400 OCZ platinums. (2gb)

I havnt tried using my OCZ reapers Pc8500 to se how high it overclocks.
Its also hard to say if its the ram / mobo

But then again. could be a shatty chip.
 
The early revision B2 chips are definitely special. I think my cpu is week 633.

The recent Allendale based revision L2 E6300 / E6400 just aren't the same when it comes time to doing some serious overclocking.

I have B2 stepping as well. It does little more 3500mhz with bump of voltage. Does 3.05ghz at default.
 
I have an L626A945 and I'm at the top of the E6300 OC list on this forum with 3.85 GHz. I've booted into Windows at 4 GHz, but never got it stable. My chip runs 2.8 GHz at 1.2V stable (as my sig says). I keep it there generally since it runs so cool. Get some good RAM and a good mobo (not sure what you have) and you might have a really high clocking chip on your hands.

I'm not sure if the 946 means yours was the chip right after mine (945), or if it means something different? :confused: If yours is very similar to mine, I'd have high hopes for it.

I ran Mushkin Redlines (DDR2-1000) with mine to get the high OC until they... stopped working.

Im currently running 3.5 @ 1.45 volts at 40C idle on both cores.. about 60C running orthos... Im very happy with this OC, how are the temps looking? and we're you using air to get to 3.85?
 
gc86: So I assume you went with the Ballistix memory. With a good mobo, some Micron D9 based memory and an early revision B2 chip, practically anyone can hit 3500 MHz. I guess a little luck helps too but the right parts makes it a lot easier.

The only question now is can you do 3600 MHz, run Orthos for 4 hours and get your name in the [H]ard OC database at a decent level? :D Good work!

Your temps look normal. I found while running Orthos I needed about 1.40 volts at 3400 MHz and 1.48 volts at 3600 MHz so 1.45 volts looks perfect for 3500 MHz.

Water cooling. Good block and pump but a not-so-good radiator. I used 1.5V (actual - measured with a DMM) to get that speed.
 
Im down to push this chip further but im a little worried about idle and load temps... after CS:S'ing it up for a hour or 2 idle went up to 42*C.. but my room is hot. Is this too high? load temps are 62-65 right now.
 
With a Core 2 Duo you don't have to worry too much about temperatures. The only thing you have to worry about when overclocking is stability.

The reported idle temperatures may not be 100% accurate so users shouldn't compare their idle temps with others. The important number is the load temp and some general guidelines for me have been:

3200 MHz - 80C
3400 MHz - 70C
3600 MHz - 60C

As the MHz goes up you will not be able to run your processor as hot when overclocking. I am Orthos stable for 4 hours at those temperatures above but if the core temperature goes up a couple of more degrees above those temps then my computer will reboot while running Orthos.

If you are stable then don't worry. You are a long ways away from the throttling point. I think you will find that at 3500 MHz you won't be able to go beyond 65C for very long without a reboot happening so you don't have to worry about hurting your processor. It will take care of itself.

If you're not 100% stable under full load then you might have to back your overclock off a 100 MHz until the fall when things cool down. Either that or get a better heatsink or some water but at the level you've reached, it's really not worth it in my opinion.

Been running it at 3600 for months now, although I have the vcore at 1.525 which I may be able to decrease a little. Does seem to be a good stepping:)

gc86: Your 6300 should be a good clocker with that PC-8000 ram, I'm only running Mushkin 6400 ram which isn't Micron D9 based.

With the OEM cooler I was limited to 3400 MHz for 24/7 use but the day the Tuniq went on I bumped it up to 3600 MHz with a bios setting of 1.525 volts and it has been happily running ever since. I guess you could say that we're both happy! :)
 
OP, with the DS3 board you need to get a fan on the MCH/nb asap if you intend to go much more. (along with an aftermarket cooler for the cpu.) With the 7x mulit you need to run very high FSB and it stresses the chips on the board just as much as the cpu.

With a good heatsink, I am not going to be concerned about running it at 1.525 volts, the temps and stability are good. I am happy, best bang for the buck cpu I have had:cool:
 
I'm planning on picking up some version of a Core 2 Duo (theres so many!) and I was wondering if yall had any recommended mobo's w/ nice OCability?
My price range is right around what a DS3 costs. (Just over $100, not over $140)

I slapped in my pc8500 OCZ reapers. current specs.

Vcore 1.45
Mem 2.1 (maxed)
FSB = 450
timings = 5:5:5:15

Was able to go from 2.8 to 3.15 by changing memory. Im going to let this run for 8 hours. and then go back into bios and my goal is 500FSB.
Before I had pc6400 OCZ platinums rev 2. Great memory for tight timings but couldn't overclock my E6300 higher then 2.8ghz.


Im running orthos almost on my 6th hour.. Running a bit hot. but still safe.

I upgraded to a thermaltake bigwater kit... temps are about the same as the v1..... very disappointing. My cpu runs so hot at idle at 3.5... 40-42

And I have an aftermarket cooler on my MCH for the 500fsb stability. It's a thermaltake extreme spirit 2.. all copper and its very quiet.
 
Im testing 470 FSB right now which is 3.3ghz.. Damn RAM makes a difference.

Im gonna run this for 8 hours.. then try 500 FSB..

BTW im using

E6300 + Asus P5B-E
PC8500 OCZ Reapers 2gb
