You're wrong. The wavelength of laser used is beyond your visible range. It even states "832-852 nm" right on the bottom near the laser -- that's infrared my friends :)

Now - I think my brand new MX1000 is DOA/broken, because the pointer jumps to the top/sides of the screen even when the mouse is staying still, and often "sticks" to one axis (ie - I move diagonally but the pointer only responds vertically or horizontally). Anybody have any symptoms like those?

You can't see the laser, but when you look into the little lense you do see a red light.

I actually have had this problem. Turned out it was my "mouse pad" I've been using a 8"X10" aluminum sheet that I sanded a little to allow my old mx700 work. Turned out I actually had a deep scratch in the dead center of the sheet. I'm assuming this scratch was causing the laser to scatter/split whatever. It was causing my pointer to shoot straight up to the top of the screen or peg in one axis only over that .5" section. Don't know if it helps you but.....

As far as lag in game from picking it up. I pick my mouse up to circle straffe, look around etc... same as anyone else. I have yet to notice a 0.1 0.2 sec. lag. My friend has a mx1000 as well and using his sold me on it. I'm sorry if the few of us that post here and game with mx1000's don't have this problem. Maybe we got lucky. I've played with a ton of different mice from old ball mice, the 1st microsoft intellimouse, razerboomslang 1000 and 2000 dpi, mx510, mx700, viper or diamond back whichever is the new boomslang I cant remember. Now the MX1000 you can say what you want but I feel it's the best mouse I have ever used to date. It fits my playing style. The new boomslang mouse would be nice but it's too damned small for my big paws.

I watched the video and duplicated exactly what the guy is doing. I couldn't duplicate his failure at all.

I see the red, and it looks like laser light; but it can't be if the 852nm label is correct. Hmmm... curious.

BTW - I have just proved that my MX1000 (broken as it is) does NOT exhibit the no-moving behaviour shown in that video, but rather starts moving immediately when it touches the surface. I'll be pissed if I RMA this one, and the replacement does lag though ! :rolleyes:

It might have, but I already thought of that. I have 3 mouse pads - an original Ratpadz, and two Ratpadz GS's, one used and one brand spanking new. All mouse pads, as well as my flat table exhibit this failure. It behaves exactly as you describe, however.
 
I do not experience any of the aforementioned problems with my mx1000, now one week old.

When I got it outta the box it was 2 bars solid green. So i charged it right up b4 i used it for the first time.

Previously I had owned an IntelliMouse Explorer 1.0 released in 1999 as the first ever optical mouse, it is ironic that I should move to an mx1000, which is the first laser mouse.
My hand was so used to that old mouse, I have been using it for 5 years. 1 month shy.

I also never use mouse pads as too many colours always threw my optical mouse off.

I also purchased for the first time a RATPADZ GS, which I honestly thought would have been better for the money it cost as it's just cheap ass plastic that gets used on computer chair arms. Plus it's very abrasive. But fast I will admit.

Wholly shit, this mouse was moving way to fast, I had to crank it down by a quater in windows default and another quater in games like bfv. I just wasn’t used to that much acceleration or speed.

I have already drained the battery in one week. Which was a little disappointing, because I want to keep the battery in better shape, by letting it drain fully then charging it to full again before using it, doing this once a week for a few hours if you want to use the mouse is a pain.
The other is black apparently makes the laser work harder than other colours, would have been handy info b4 i bought the mousepad.

The RF cordless feature is awesome. I play games and can't tell the difference between it and corded mice. Considering this is my first wireless mouse, i'm happy.


Get one, if it's comfortable in your hand and you can afford it.

YOU are a tool. No wonder your mouse don't work, treat it with respect it cost too much.
I do get a skip if I take the mouse off the pad, higher than 1cm, but that’s rare.
Doesn't it turn the laser off, to prevent radiation and injury by the laser?

This is not necessary for Lithium Ion battery technology. The only thing that matters is that you give it a good charge the first time (which seems to have been done at the factory), and don't let it or any other rechargeable battery sit totally dead for long periods of time. Just put it back on your charger every night.
 
I love my MX500... But I'm not going to lie- I would love to have a MX1000. I like the feel of it in my hand more, and the weight didn't bother me when I tried it out. So I guess my vote would be for the MX1000... If I only could afford it.
 
Update on the twitchy mouse - I exchanged it at the store for a new one, that works flawlessly. The new one isn't quite level (ie it tips back and forth), but it's not really a big deal. Still, I've owned Microsoft mice for almost 20 years now, and I've NEVER had one of theirs not be completely level.

Funny note - I sat there thinking oh shit the mouse is on 1 red bar. gotta plan to recharge it soon. i sat there thinking, wtf now, I have to leave the comp on again for 6 hours waiting for it to chrage, what a waste of electricity! :p

DUH! it has it's own power source. here i was thinking I needed to leave the comp turned on, cause it was charging of USB power. LMAO!
 
I just bought the MX1000, and I don't have any of the problems mentioned above.

It only wobbles when I put it on my slightly warped desk, and it never skips or lags when I use it. Hell, I can even use it on my hair and it will work perfectly, even on my cast too!

Then again, my last mouse was a ball mouse. Microsoft intellimouse. So from a ball, skipping optical, and goin right to laser, its one helluva improvement.

Damn nice mouse :D

BTW: Mine is the "Onyx Black" version, not the "Gunmetal Silver" (Blueish) One. :D
 
i just bought myself an MX1000 lastnight, and ihavnt had any of these issues with mine(im having entirely different issues alltogether, and seem to be the setpoint software).

i tried to watch the videos but neither would play.

im not noticing any skipping, or lag, or the mouse shutting off for long periods of time(assuming ive read this thread right and those were the complaints). runing the mouse on a well used ratpad GS.

i did notice this mouse slid alot nicer on the ratpad, but i chalked that upto worn feet on the MX700 vs. new feet on the MX1000.
 
Mousing-related question: I've got an MX510, and while it's a great mouse, it suffers from the same problem all the other mice I've used have. Basically, the mouse kind of sticks, for lack of a better word, to the surface of the mousepad, so when I want to make a slight adjustment (say, I want to aim a little to the right to get a headshot in CS), the mouse doesn't smoothly move. I have to apply pressure, and then the mouse just jerks to the side, rather than smootly sliding. Is there any kind of material available to keep the mouse from settling in place like this?

Teflon Tape (AKA: Mouse Skatez), those little Teflon Pads that are sold at a lot of computer places online (www.frozencpu.com has them)

Pledge-ing the mousepad helps, but a combination of both is great.

Edit: Not the plumber-ish Teflon Tape, this stuff is different. If you can find it, 3M Skived 'Film' Tape is really good for this, and cheaper than buying "mouse skatez".

Thanks. Would a new mouse pad make a difference? I'm just using some generic Allsop brand.
 
I'm still using my MX700 I got when it was brand new using the Office Depot price misprint for $50. I'd like the 1000, but I don't like the price right now.

You are correct, however high mouse sensitivity makes your aim needlessly imprecise because the flaws in your hand movement are magnified, and small aiming adjustments become more difficult. Of course you sacrifice response time with a low sensitivity, but it's so much harder to hit anything, I feel that it's worth it. :p

On the other side of the argument, if you feel that your aim is so amazing that you can aim the same with a huge sensitivity as you can with a low one, then more power to you. Whatever works.
 
I hate to make a personal attack like this but the original poster is clearly not a competitive gamer. Highest acceleration? rofl.
Go to cpl/quakecon and find me a competitor with a cordless mouse and anything but disabled acceleration. You won't.
 
Definitely have never seen anyone use a cordless mouse in competition, however practically all of the top duellers use some level of accel. Ranging from very low accel (zero4) to very high accel (fatal1ty). Only a select few use none at all.
 
Fatality uses an mx510.

And after reading this thread I am hesitant to upgrade my mx500 to an mx1000.
 
For the most part the MX 1000 is OK but does have major issues with many mouse pads as well.
On some mouse pads if you try to make a straight line accross the pad it jumps all around.

So if trying to draw for instance you can't make a nice straight line. Or head shots never seem to line up well.
Its because one it see's every bump on pad so it jumps with bumps on your screen. And some slick covered pads make it do the same thing.
Not a gaming mouse or CAD/drawing from what I have seen unless you find just the right mouse pad.

I have always played with my mice with accelleration on. From the razor boomslang to the mx510 and the mx1000. Its something that I am used to.

That's right... I am used to playing this way. Just like somefolks swear by their trackballs. I prefer playing with acceleration on.

Don't hate me because I play this way. :)

I am having this issue as well. Since I own two DV camcorders (er...one, hurricane took out one), I can do one solid video of the mx500, mx700 and mx1000 mice with this issue. It does exist. I went searching because I went through this issue after putting $80 on this mouse today, playing about ten minutes of one game, and find it totally unacceptable. Mice are meant to be picked up, it is a part of their basic design. People are trained to pick up the mouse to move it. There has never been any delay in any previous mouse...

Is doing what the user did (which, by the way, sounds loud and painful but it isn't hurting the mouse) normal activity? No, but being able to track quickly after the mouse is repositioned is normal activity. I actively use this technique with low sensitivities as to not use much room - I hold the mouse almost at a slight angle to move it, and then recenter. Since even my aiming uses this technique, ...I can't even aim anymore. And no, don't give me shit about me doing it wrong, because my mx500 and mx700, the crap 5 button mouse I used before and the ancient Intellimouse 3.0 I am glad to have gotten rid of all worked fine. Hell, even ball mice worked fine. This is a bug in the way mice are designed to work and needs to be resolved.

I am serious about the video. While my firewire is flakey, I am sure I can get my notebook's firewire up and running if you really want a full video proof of this. SOME OF YOU MAY not have the problem, but some of us DO. Maybe you don't know what the problem is, who knows. But it is there, and I know it from first hand experience. The issue isn't whether the problem exists or not, as it truly does - there are simply too many cases of occurances for this to be false, plus Logitech is in defense. The main thing at hand here is is simply to find a solution.
 
I have since returned mine for a new one,
Now this one is much better as far as jumping around but still does it. And yes the pause is still there.
 
I've noticed with my mouse when the battery gets low (using it for a day and a half with one green bar), and I pick it up and put it back down, pauses, but its not nearly as bad as the video showed.

With a a battery that is 2 or more green bars, it never does this.

I lift my mouse all the time. Its just how people have learned to use mice. I started out on small mice that you could easily pickup and move everytime you needed more space on the mouse pad. The lifting is subltle and hardly noticed. I do it unconsiously.
 
Second one has gone bad as well. Jumps around just as bad now.
They should do a recall.

you dont run set point or mouseware do you? the mx duo DOES NOT work with the mx1000 100% correctly the mx1000 is reconized as a keyboard with the mx duo base station and only the forward and back buttons work as per the norm since ms drivers are used

also i would not recomend charging on the mx duo base station i just tested my mx1000 station and got 8 volts as the contacts the best i got off my mx duo one was 6 volts....


btw my mx1000 has that problem but only if you lift the mouse over an inch off the mouse pad.... any lower and there is no lag and i would have to say the adverage person does not lift thier mouse over the inch to get it to do that i did a lifting as i would if i played with low enough sensitivity and it didnt lag....

plus i am dissappointed with the battery life it lasts like 4-5 days of near constant use... looks like ill be seeing a high of 9 days between charges...


oh i use it with the sensitivity maxed....
 
A lot of people do not realize that there is a tweak for all wired usb-based mouses that allows it to be much better than an MX1000. I will keep that to myself however. So, utilizing that little tweak, the MX510 is much better over any other mouse in existence. The wireless lag delay is not beneficial. Teflon and a great mousepad like Xtrac's / fUnc's is all you can ask for. Pledge and go.

Since some people think it's fun to hoard information and rather than pass it along they'd rather just taunt other people with it here's the USB mouse rate tweak:

This tweak requires SP2.

The standard USB port polling frequency for mice is 125hz ( for serial port 40hz ). This will not change no matter what mouse you buy as long as it uses the USB interface. The PS/2 port however can be adjusted to deliver as much as 200hz with the help of third party programs, making it the better option for games compared to a normal USB interface. However, USB can be spiced up by doing a little hexediting.

You can check your own polling rate by using this little piece of software:

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way responsible for any damage caused by this tweak. There are reports of it working fine in MX 300/310 and 500/510 ( I use an MX510 with which the tweak works ), however cordless MX mice like 700/900/1000 suffer from skipping and erratic behaviour when the tweak is enabled. I have also read reports of killed USB ports though other users say it just isn't enough to restore the backup file, and that you must reinstall all motherboard drivers to revert back to default polling. I guess there is a reason for limiting it to 125hz. If you still feel up to it here's how you do it:

1) Get a hexeditor. I used hex workshop, it's easy enough to use for someone without any prior experience of hexediting.

2) Take a backup of the following file: c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys

3) Open the file in a hexeditor and search for a line that goes 3C 08 73 09 C6 86 0A 01.

4) Change this line to B0 02 73 09 52 8C 0A 01 for 500hz, B0 04 73 09 52 8A 0A 01 for 250hz

5) Save & exit

6) Boot to safemode

7) Copy the now edited usbport.sys to c:\windows\system32\drivers AND c:\windows\system32\dllcache ( hidden folder )

8) Reboot

9) Fire up the mouse rate checker and see if it worked. If it did, try playing a FPS game and see & feel the difference

On my Logitech MX310, Logitech allows me to move the slider up to 200hz already without a patch.

What slider where? I have an MX510 and nowhere in the drivers is a section for the mouse sampling rate. I'm using the mouseware 9.80 drivers.
 
200 hz doesnt even compare to 500. :) Most MX510 users will report 450 as their average. I am the lucky ones to report a stable 500. And there is another post that has the *patch* for the USB polling tweak. Use it. Don't buy MX1000. :)
