I'm between jobs and can't afford to replace my GPU so my solution is to try some older games I haven't gotten around to trying yet. I'm trying to get Gothic to run on my system in Windows 7 64bit. I've set it to XP SP3 in compatibility mode and still no luck.

What to retro gamers do on this forum? Do I need to set up dual boot with an XP partition? Do you emulate XP? How are drives with XP. Do I need to format a drive to do it.

I want to run a few games like system shock 2.

Why would you want your operating systems to fight each other  ?

Seriously, though, most people run an older version of Windows inside of a virtual machine to play games that won't run on a newer version.

I realized I used the wrong dual but can't change it now.

Doing a bit of googling, when when you say virtual do mean installing "XP mode" or something else?

XP mode, or an XP installation using Oracle's VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation/Player, or the like.
For old-school DOS games, there's DOSbox.

You can also look for fixes, like here's one for System Shock 2 (I don't know the validity, as I don't have it):

All of the Gothic games ran fine on Win 7 64 for me. For the first Gothic game I had to jump through some hoops to get it working with a 16:9 ratio, more than 25 fps, and to get the cutscenes working. I used a collection of tools called "Gothic 1 - Improvement Tools", I also used something called "GothicVDFS" but I don't remember exactly why I used it(it might have to do with the cutscenes). If you're using Steam make sure to disable the overlay because the game won't launch with it enabled.

Edit: I just noticed that my Steam counter only shows a few minutes played for Gothic so I probably had to run it in offline mode after some of the changes.

or jump on the freebies thread and start piecing together a retro XP box

I'm tired of spending hours trying to get a game up and getting no results. I've gone through guides for gothic 1 and 2 and they are very unstable.

What configurations do people find is the fastest and move reliable? XP mode, VirtualBox or VMWare?

I've never used visualization some I'm reading up on it now.

I'm in the UK and I have a small flat so piecing together a second build isn't really an option.

System Shock 2 works fine in Win 7 64-bit, provided you get all of the official and non-official updates and whatnot.

do you have that fucktarded UAC crap on? disable it. set the game executable to run as admin and try both compatibility modes (xp sp2 & sp3), one of them will work. i never had any problem with old games on both 7 and 8.

I have disabled all the UAC crap. I finally got it working, I need to open the GothicStarter_mod.exe, wait for some errors and tab out and click maximize. So I have full screen window. Unfortunately I can get past the controls of the game. Menus, dialogue, combat, inventory are all too much trouble to bother. I have no problem with the graphics. I can't understand why they don't make left click the use key. I wanted to give it a chance but it's too annoying.

Any recommendations for an open RPG from that period with better controls? something i can run with iGPU?

i keep windows xp pro on a extra 2tb hard drive and change out the windows 7 ultimate drive from a corsair 800d hot sawpbay.

its like chnaging os like nes carts. i also have a linux hard drive. i keep windows98 around.

it also makes sure they os never cross each otheror write anything to the win 7 drive since it is removed from the machine.

The controls are pretty awful in that game(especially combat), they're a little better once you get used to them but they're still clunky.

I can't think of any games quite like Gothic, Morrowind is probably the closest but the graphics haven't held up as well without using mods that might not work well on an IGP and it's a little different since it's not a European rpg. You might be able to get Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines running on that and the KOTOR games should probably work on that and there's always the earlier isometric RPGs like Baldurs Gate.

Edit: If you're willing to go back a little farther the first 2 Fallout games should run just fine, if you get them from GOG they'll even come pre-configured with DOSBox.

that is so cool, i was like that some years ago, somehow along the way i lost some of the passion... but i still love them <d4rkn3ss kiss his pc> :p

Both Gothic and system shock run fine on windows 8 64 bit as well as my previous windows 7 rig so they should be good to go. Did you look for any fan patches or updates for the games?

First of all, you are posting in the wrong subsection. You should be posting in Operating Systems:

http://hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

I started off with partitioning one physical drive in half and having Win XP 32 on the first partition and Win 7 64 on the second. You have to install the older OS first, then the second.

The drawbacks to having 2 OSes on one disk ( rather than having each OS on it's own physical disk ) is that Win XP will hold the MBR ( master boot record ) meaning that XP and Win 7 are married to one another - if you lose the Win 7 partition ( due to reformatting ), it's not a big deal, just re install Win 7 but if you lose Win XP ( due to reformatting ), you lose both XP + Win 7 ( huge hassle ).

If you install on two physical discs, each physical disc has it's own boot record ( which is what I have now: Win XP 32 bit on WD Raptor 300 GB ; Win 7 64 bit on Samsung Pro SSD 512 GB ).

Easy BCD is mentioned in the second link that I posted. Your post ( and most of the posts in this thread ) are completely worthless and adds nothing to this thread. Thanks.

The whole point of the thread was that they were trying to get a specific game working which they had already done more than a day before you responded. The fact that their primary goal was to try to get a game running is probably why they posted in the game forum instead of the OS forum like you suggested, technically it probably should have been in the PC games forum but I don't think that it really matters much or the mods would have moved it.

Back OT: I'm curious if the OP ever settled on an older game to play.
