Are the Mushkin PSU's okay for the price? I know they don't compare with the Corsairs, but they are half the price too.

Nope. They don't compare or are even close. I suggest the Corsair, silverstone, and seasonic.
 
While it is not exactly under $80 you can get the Corsair HX520 for $86.86 at Securemart.com (froogle.google.com search turned that one up)

new system Im working on:

Toledo X2 4200
hadnt decided on a vid card yet. I have to buy a PCI-E card.
1 gig Corsair
2- 80 gig Samsung drives in RAID 0 array
and my water system
 
Graphics card is going to be the deciding factor.

Decide on the graphics card, then decide on the PSU.

Unless you up the budget on the PSU to include a unit that could power virtually any graphics card you throw at it.
 
Ok. Then you don't need much power. If you use a PSU with a single +12V rail, you could actually get by with a 450W. 500W to 600W if you get something with a split +12V.

So what is it about the Mushkin that attracts you other than price? Modular?
 
The modular is a plus. I thought that maybe they were as good with their PSUs as they are with their memory.

The first review uses a system, and doesn't measure for ripple.
The second review also uses a system, doesn't measure for ripple, and draws less than the system used in tthe first review (closer to 200w..)
The third review uses the least stressful system, uses software to measure rails, and doesn't even consider ripple, crossloads, trasient, etc.

None of the three reviews are therefore recommended to be followed. Try Jonnyguru.com for a review on the 550; it's not the 580, but it'll give you an idea of things. Don't forget that those three reviews you posted also don't point out the fact that the psu was given to them for review. A free psu.. definatly a better score than one that isn't.

For 80, the Corsair HX 520 is the best choice. it has more power (usable, and actual), is modular, silent, high efficient, and is $80 after mir.
 
I currently have an Enermax Noisetaker 420W. Its a couple of years old, but Ive never had any problems with it. Do you think it is enough for the new system I outlined above?

Or am I going to have to buy a new one?
 
Get a new PSU. That Noisetaker only has 14A on the +12V rail. Won't be enough for your new system I believe.
 
I know the Mushkin aren't the best but I must say I love mine, but I got mine on sale for $100... Mine is the 650w version, and its running the system in my sig with no issues at all.
 
I have an xclio greatpower 500w modular. I got it for $80 from newegg awhile back. Works great. I think channel well makes the greatpower models...johnnyguru would know better than me though.
