Personally, I'm torn now. The size doesn't matter to me. Most reviews have said that even typing on the smaller EEE 901 doesn't take long to get used to. For me, it's whether I want an SSD and 802.11n but with an uglier casing, or whether I want a better looking case but without 802.11n and with an HD instead of an SSD.

Are you sure of the size specs? There's a comparison picture on wikipedia that shows the eee looking a lot smaller in width than .3 differance. It looks like the eee might not be aligned with the wind there though.

The MSI wind is a bargain. Best bang for the buck by far. The CPU is even overclockable with a the flip of a switch. This is a no brainer especially if you need a lot of storage space.

That said I will still probably go for the eee 901. I like it's slightly smaller size, SSD, and longer battery life. I think Asus dropped the ball by including wireless-N and WiMax though. They could have been far more price competitive without those features.

Anyway the ee901 for me unless the Dell model ends up with some sweet specs.

The 512MB Wind with Linux is $399, the 1GB with XP is $499, and right now at this moment I'm leaning towards the Wind. And MSI released it as of today so it'll be popping up all over the place:

http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/msi-wind.aspx?page=1

5 HOURS AND 30 MINUTES OF REAL BATTERY LIFE (Wi-Fi off, just over 4 with it on) in Laptop Magazine's testing of the Wind. If that doesn't make people run to the Wind over the Eee I have no idea what will. :D

That's amazing, but still not as good as I want. I'm still hoping for the day we'll see a 24 hour minimum laptop/mobile device with all the bells and whistles working...

The xp wind also has a 6 cell battery as opposed to 3 cell on the linux version, I believe, and I'm not positive if the linux one has bluetooth (though I think it does). I think I'm gonna get the xp one and dual boot linux with it. Also, according to engadget, the xp one will be shipping in under 2 weeks, but the linux one won't be available until later in the summer.

The Linux Wind will not have bluetooth.

The EEE 901 doesn't look (aesthetically speaking), that bad. I'm still torn right now. The EEE has been a love/hate affair with me. It's uglier than the Wind, but still not ugly IMO. I guess I like ugly, mechanical things; the Buick GNX comes to mind.

Yea...but the EEE 901 will have 7.8 hours of battery life. Wifi on, probably puts it at 4.5-5 hours of battery life.

Yeah well, Laptop Magazine posted their actual results so... when the Eee 901 is actually out and someone does real-world testing on it or at least makes the attempt, we'll see what happens. :D

For the moment, the Wind wins...

On paper, the EEE 901 wins because it has 802.11n and a 6600 mAh battery compared to the 5500 for the Wind, disregarding the screen size of course.

But, we'll see. For me, I'm just gonna pick up whichever one hits the US market first. Wind = June 16th. EEE 901 = ?.

I'll believe the 7.8hr claim when it's confirmed by independent testing. The Wind was supposed to have 7hrs battery life, then they dropped it to 6hrs, then just before letting reviewers try it to 5.5hrs.

If the wind had bluetooth i'd totally be set on it, but as it is I think i'm still going to get one. i've got a WD 320gb sata drive and a 2gb so dimm, with those added it would be a pretty zippy system!

Oops late night post, it actually does have bluetooth perfect!

Asus even with same battery as wind would have more battery life as SSD consumes less than HDD afaik.

Still imho 20 gigs is not enough for modern computing.
Hdd and oc option on wind makes it better.

SSDs don't do anywhere near as much for battery life as people would have you believe, that's the problem. It seems reasonable to assume that they would what with no moving parts, etc... but it's just not the case. Same thing with LED backlights in laptops/LCD panels now - they really don't suddenly increase battery life that much more over the old tech, unfortunately.

20GB isn't that bad assuming your OS and apps don't take more than 5-6GB. What exactly are you planning to put on a tiny laptop?

I don't have very many documents or power point presentations that take more than 1 GB, and 10 GB or so should be enough space for around 10 hours of video at a decent bitrate (I encode a lot of videos anyway, might as well make a few for my laptop).

I was completely sold on the 901 until I started seeing information about the Wind. If the reviews hold up over the next month or two, I will be getting a Wind.

The one on newegg has a 3 cell battery...I thought the 499 XP one was supposed to come with a 6 cell?

So what is the actual battery life supposed to be like on the 3 cell? The review on the previous page was of a 6 cell I believe.

the wind is an 88% keyboard vs the current EEE's 80%. Might not matter to some people but it's the difference between a keyboard bigger than my hands and one smaller than....

Does anyone know what the size on the EEE 905/1000 is going to be?

It's overprice by a small margin on newegg. The 3 cell is stated to be on sale for 479.99 while the 6 cell would be 499.99 when it is released.

I believe you get a free 6-cell upgrade in Sept anyways... Atleast that's what I recall, originally the XP was supposed to get 6-cell, Linux 3-cell, but because they were running low on 6-cells and wanted to get it released they compromised.

Either way, I'm looking to get the linux version if it's cheaper and has the same features... Just upgrade the ram, install my own copy of XP, and wallah. I also really like the internal 2.5" sata... meaning if I want to upgrade I could... instead of buying an external HDD, I could just get a 250-320 and replace the 80...

I thought I saw it on engadget but I could be mistaken...

Who knows what they plan to do... I plan to buy one off ebay with the 20-25% cashback from microsoft though :)

That and a 320GB HDD and an additional stick of ram brings it to ~$450-475 with the cashback :D

EDIT - I checked into it further, it's supposed to be $480 for XP with 3-cell, $500 for XP with 6-cell in Sept, and $400 for Linux with 3-cell and 512mb ram in Sept...

Who knows...

I don't think the ram is upgradeable.

edit... My bad its the Aspire One i was thinking about.

I need at least 40-50GB of hard drive space for the system to be usable, so I'm looking at the Wind.

I've had my Wind a couple of days and I love this thing. I'm currently dual booting OSX and Windows XP and they both run really well (not saying much for XP since it'll run on anything).

Couple of minor gripes is that the screen seems heavier than the bottom portion of the laptop so that can make it feel awkward. Hopefully the hinges will hold up. 2nd, I'm really wanting that 6 cell battery. 2.5 hours on the 3-cell is ok... but not nearly enough for me.

MSi said explicitly they would not give a 6 cell upgrade. They "may" offer the 6 cell battery at a discounted price for people that bought the 3 cell wind.

I'd go for the EEE.

I would have too except the keyboard is ass-tastic.

Quoting myself from another forum.

From laptopmag: "Under the lid is the same sized keyboard as the 900. However, there was a bit of a bend to my keyboard and we actually ended up prying the keyboard off to fix it."
http://blog.laptopmag.com/eee-pc-901-unboxing-shots-and-first-impressions

From reghardware: "The keyboard itself has a solid feel with almost no bend beyond the press of a key, though the keys remain more suitable to small fingers than big ones. That said, on our review sample, the right-hand end of the keyboard bend very slightly upwards, causing it to rattle a bit."
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/17/review_eee_pc_901/page2.html

From notebookreview: "The keyboard on two of the Eee PC 901's we were playing with had a bulging in the center, and a slightly tweaked spacebar and alt key. After tearing the keyboard off and bending it slightly in my hand, as well as reseating the cable, we were back in action with a much better feeling keyboard."
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4447

Not EEE 901, but it is the EEE 1000 - from laptopmag: "However, the keyboard is not perfect; Out of the box, we noticed quite a bit of flex, which caused the keys to produce a loud clicking sound."
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/asus-eee-pc-100h.aspx?page=2

I just plunged on a 901. I had a 2G which I like but my 2 main gripes were Linux and the screen being to small to get most websites on it. I use this as a secondary laptop for when I'm going on trips where I don't need too much computing power but want portability and connectivity. The size can't be beat. I've been fine with the 2G's keyboard, it takes a little getting used to, but I am a touch typer with full sized hands and have no problems. The connectivity, especially the bluetooth as well as the XP and the SSD make this a definate for me. My last big trip was a few months ago to Africa and this would have been perfect. I like the ruggedness that that the SSD gives and the affordability of the computer means that I'm not put out too much if the computer is stolen. I just carry a 2.5" HDD for backup and extra files.

Personall, I'd go for the eeePC. It's not meant to be your main computer. IA shock-proof SSDD (and fast) would certainly be better than a large HDD for the purposes of this type of mobility. I just love (/sarcasim) when people complain about the small keyboard. Were they really expecting a big one?
