Reciently, I've been thinking about getting a Powercolor 9600xt ultra to replace my ti4200 for Doom3 and HL2. After viewing the recient HL2 beta benchmarks, I'm not sure the 9600xt will really be worth the money. Dispite the fact that the PC Ultra varient can o/c more then anyother 9600xt availible , is it really going to incrase the fps that much?

I saw the MSI RX9800 on ncix today and after looking into it, it uses an 9800XT core and can overclock faster then default XT speeds. It costs $292 vs. $237 for the 9600XT Ultra.

I dont really want to go any higher in the product line due to the fact that i only have a 2500+ @ 3200 and anything more top of the line will be bottle necked by my cpu and i dont have alot of money to spend.

A 5900XT might also be doable, it costs about the same but i dont think its as fast as a 9800pro nor one o/c'd to XT speeds

Does anyone have an expenance with this msi card that they'd like to share? I've only been able to find 2 reviews and both had drastically diffrent o/c results.
 
Don't know specifically about the MSI but of the cards you are talked about it's certainly the best bang for the buck. A noticable step up from a 9600Pro.
 
yea thats a mad good card, better cooling than a normal 9800pro, so it should o/c better and provide great d3 preformance.
 
Another question i have about this card... Do you think a VGA Silencer Rev.3 would fit on this bad boy. i know it fits on 9800pros and xt, but since this one has thoes el cheapo capacitors, will there be enough clearance? In the photos the capacitors seem taller. I could be mistaken, i dunno.

If it wouldn't fit i'd be almost temped to take a chance of the seemingly new revision of the sapphire 9800pro at tigerdiect thats rumored to have a r360 core. identified by the new hs fan with the sticker on it.
 
For $292, a GeForce 6800 would be 10-20% for faster and cost maybe 10 bucks more. Just so you know.

And BTW, the Sapphire 9800 Pros at NewEgg are almost 100% guarenteed to be a R360 core, and they cost a lot less.

Zipzoomfly.com is pretty much the same as newegg (only they seem less liberal with their return policy) and they ship to Canada. If you want the MSI might wanna checkout there.
 
I have a 9600 PRO 128 MB, but the fan is not working properly and the card is heating up and causing games like FARCRY to crash, (by the way it runs great on this card.), so I wanna make a jump that will at least give me significant improvement from my earlier card on most games not just D3. And i don{t know how much will the XT improve from the PRO. can´t imagine much...My 2 candidates are MSI RX9800PRO 128MB for 195 dollars U.S. and Abit R9600XT 256 MB for 178...ini meeni mini mo or is one a better choice??
 
There's only 1 bios that works for this card afaik and that's the Medion XXL bios. If you look at your card's pcb, you'll find a small green sticker that says "made in china". Look behind it and you'll discover that the card is a Medion with a MSI bios on it.

Overdrive is disabled, can't be enabled, also there's no temp sensor. Fan is loud as hell.

I bought the same card.. boy was i disappointed.
 
good thing i ordered a vga silencer. i got it on sale at ncix for 18cnd
