Interesting to see Intel trying to get into the market. I don't think I would want to deal with the Intel GPU software issues on a handheld.

Lenovo using SteamOS is more interesting imo. Though the version they are selling isn't using AMDs newer Zen5 chips yet. Apparently they were showing off a demo of a Z2. Now that Valve will be more directly support hardware from some of the other companies, we might have a little more choice hardware wise. I wonder if Valve will license anyone wanting to put steamos on Intel hardware. No real reason it wouldn't work fine I don't think, I don't believe Valve is doing anything that wouldn't work with Intel mesa. Maybe they would have to do more support work on bits like the game scope compositor?

Would be pretty cool if Valve would bring themselves to develop and maintain a desktop version of SteamOS again.

I think today - what with how much better Linux gaming has become - it could be a major hit among those fed up with Microsoft's bullshit.

The state of SteamOS at this point is such that, for my gaming desktop, I'm perfectly happy keeping it as my primary OS, games requiring Windows for compatibility reasons with things like anti-cheat software notwithstanding.

Wait, you use it on your desktop today?

I thought they EOL:ed the SteamOS desktop install years ago. Did I miss something?

No, sorry, bad forming of words on my part. I’m saying I would be happy to do so, but don’t currently. My experiences with it on my Steam Deck I love the interface and think it’s a great solution, and with a few tweaks I think it has the potential to be THE go-to gaming OS.

Valve seems to be working hard to ensure that the modern (ie Arch based, 3.x Holo) SteamOS will be tested and finalized on the SteamDeck, before expanded to common hardware. Stuff like the Gamescope compositor and other new custom work is possible to use on a desktop Linux distro (with Bazzite, Nobara, ChimeraOS, Garuda and others pulling from it at least in part) , but its not quite intended to be "there" yet. When it is, it will be a full distro like the old SteamOS based on Debian used to be, intended to just install on common hardware. The recent offical support of the Lenovo LegionGO to ship with SteamOS should be evidence of it taking a big step forward towards general usage in this regard and its good to see, but there's still work left to do I gather before there will be official installers for any bit of vaguely modern consumer hardware you may have.
