Since we started to roll out unlimited cloud storage to Office 365 consumer subscribers, a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average.


Very short sited of them not to realize this would happen.

I can't see how Microsoft didn't see that coming. Unlimited plans attract the type of people who like to use massively more than the average user.

gah, they should have limited these excessive users by either slowing down their backup to a crawl after a certain amount or created notifications that would require them to click to keep their back up going.

Exactly. Why didn't they caveat Unlimited* in the ToS to have limitations of excessive use like some ISPs do with "unlimited" consumer plans. Foolish and this will ruin the product's credibility.

Yep always a big mistake to offer 'unlimited' anything. Will always get tards taking advantage of it. Should have limited it to 2TB at most and then pay for extra.

lol I wish I would have known I would have backed up my media server to it (about 50TB lol)

although I am sure most people have the same rips so dedup should have helped them out

If you can't offer unlimited, don't say you are offering unlimited. Those people backing everything up to it weren't taking advantage of anything but the service they paid for.

Also, don't say unlimited and give a caveat that it's not unlimited; that's bold face lying. Two options; give a limit, or give truly unlimited.

They are not tards, they are someone using a product/service they were sold.

If you do not like the word "unlimited", then do not use it. If you want to bluff, then be prepared for someone to call your bluff.

Someone used 75TB....so what? For every one of them, you probably have 100's or maybe even thousands that use 100MB.

I have 1.25TB allowed on my One Drive. I'm using 470KB....It's been like that for a year now. I have 50GB allowed on my iCloud Drive...I use that one much more and it's up to 200MB.

Fuck 'em.

Dedup'ing "media" is often illegal as the individual users own the license, not the data provider. The data provider does not have the right to provide the data to individual users.

removing duplicated files is not illegal.....

if 5 people have a license and upload the same things there is nothing wrong with keeping 1 version...lol where do you come up with this -_-

and yes uploading that to a DC is fair use so dont even try too bastardize that while your at it

The point is my friend that if you see anything listed as 'Unlimited' then you should know full well that a small group of 'Tards' will abuse it and it will be taken away.

That's a rule of life.

It just takes some longer than others to learn. In this case whomever offers a 'unlimted' service' and the tards that think it will last forever.

I found out another secret way to get unlimited cloud storage... I just host my own server on my own internet connection at my own home. That gives me access to, and provides a central repository for, all of my files; accessible from anywhere on the internet. That fits the definition of "cloud storage" just as much as data stored on some Microsoft server somewhere does.

You can't really compare a server at your house with corporate storage in a real datacenter with redundant power and proper fire suppression systems. I use cloud storage as offsite backup in case of disaster, having it in my house would be pointless
