I opted to put this here instead of computer audio because it seemed more broad..

anyway, I want to be able to listen to my MP3's at work. My MP3's are at home. At college I tried setting up a FTP at my home computer, and getting the MP3's that way, but even on a 100 mbps network it was slow as hell. SHOUTcast broadcasts the songs, and has bad quality. I found a terminal service plugin for winamp that will stream the audio, but I dont have terminal service client on my work computer (and I think its a violation of policy to use it).

Any other suggestions? I'd also use this for my LAN at home, between my normal PC and my HTPC over wireless.
 
Winamp can play songs from a mapped drive, so that will work at home. At work, your going to have a tougher time. If your company knows anything about security, you probably won't be connecting to your home PC. Get a cheap small portable drive. I have a USB 2.0 40 GB drive that's small (laptop drive) and is powered by the USB port. I keep my music on there for work.

Wow didnt know they had USB powered drives. I do have my MP3's on an external 2.0 drive, problem is its getting more and more corrupted every day so tonight I'm backing it to a 20 gig I have and putting it IN my computer, since the external enclosure is annoying anyway.

They do know security here, and theyre kind of annoying about it. I understand the need for security from the OUTSIDE, but when they restrict what we can do HERE, it gets stupid.

Anyway, where'd you get that drive? Id like to not spend money but I guess I can sell something and scrape it together.
 
Maybe set up a VPN if any of your computers are running Windows 2000/2003 Server

They specify we cant use VPN software here

Maybe I will just eat it and buy the 40 gigger, or set up a FTP. The FTP will be tricky due to my router but I can figure it out.
 
I got mine at Best Buy a while ago. Buslink makes it. But, I'm sure you could find something cheaper on newegg.

I found some externals that are USB2.0 or firewire but theyre damn expensive and need external power

Heres the same for components and self-powered:

$18 enclosure, uses PS/2 power but I can easily just jack it into the USB:

just buy a 512 or 256mb usb drive, while those are slower and more expensive and have less space, considering your needs it might just be perfect. you can play them straight from the usb drive too. hell i play mpegs from mine
 
!!!!!!!!!!!!

i went home and set up xitami, had it working perfectly there, come to work, I can connect on HTTP fine, cant get a directory listing in FTP though, so I change the ports as they might be blocked here, and the !!!!!!!!!!!! at home CRASHES. I know it crashed because every time I restarted it when I was setting up (which you HAVE to do) itd give some bullshit "file not found" error and disconnect.

256 and 512 are way too small, and considering their price, Id be much better off with a full 20 gig drive. theyre tiny as hell.

I'd be wary about streaming mp3z in any way like you are wanting to do. You already know they are psycho about security. I wouldn't be surprised if they jumped your ass for the bandwidth use also.

Trust me, I've thought about something similar for my job. Except for two problems. 1) I no longer have my cable connection at home. 2) I work for state govt and they would go nuts and probably fire me over the bandwidth usage.
