The parts are starting to show up for my second 2p build and I'm starting to wonder if I would be better off moving into 1 4P.

I have a 2p with 6134s currently and the 6128s should be showing up for my second 2p any day now.

I assume that if I moved to a 4p I could use my current cpus and the 6134s would just downclock to 2ghz? If that's so do you think I would get better ppd with the 4p with 2 cpus downclocked or 2 2ps @ full speed?

Any input would be appreciated. :D

You are right, the 6134s would just be down clocked.

A 4p would net you more PPD. 4 x 6128s should land you at about 250k PPD.

Wow, that much you think?!

That would be well worth the few extra hundred bucks to upgrade.

Any recommendations on a good 4p mobo? I know i saw some links around here for one ~$650 but cant seem to find them.

If you are patient and constantly looking, you can grab a tyan open box board off of newegg for about $400, although, there is no guarantee you will ever get one.

That leaves you with two other choices.

1) $716 - http://www.wiredzone.com/Supermicro-H8QGi+-F-Motherboard-SWTX-w--Quad-1944-pin-S-G34~10020000~0.htm

This one should come back in stock (drop ship from SM) on the 17th
This board is more expensive than option two, but it has a better socket layout, making it easier to mount heatsinks.

2) $640 http://www.wiredzone.com/Supermicro-H8QGL-IF+-Motherboard-SWTX-w--Quad-1944-pin-S-G34~10021077~0.htm

This one has two sockets quite close to each other. So, you will have to use some smaller heatsinks or just use the muskymount (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1662099).

Check out this thread, lots of good info:

Either of these boards can be overclocked (with a lot of help from the IRC). But when overclocked, you can probably hit 285k PPD.

I think I'll get the $640 one and do the musky mount. (sounds like a sex position BTW lol).

Thanks for the help guys.

It is...you mean no one told you the "price" to overclock one of these things?

On a serious note, 4p all the way. Depending on your time frame and if my SM board is repairable, I may have a Tyan 4p I'll let go for a good deal to a folder - no overclocking, but close to $250 cheaper. I'll keep you posted if you are interested.

On the HSF issue, there may be a better option for the H8QGL boards than the "musky mounted" 212+. Again, stay tuned.

.... Did someone see a bird just now?
Hakward!

anyone see some dogs running around with a sarcastic kitty? homeward bound.

Seriously, go 4P all the way! The points will be so worth it!
