Mouse vs Controller Which is best - Anatomically Speaking....

I'm curious as to what gamers think has the potential for higher degrees of control.

My opinion is that the mouse has more potential for control because of the anatomical differences between the thumbs, which typically govern the controller and the wrist, which governs the mouse. I'm not a orthopedic surgeon but it seems to me that your wrist has a higher degree of control than your thumbs because there are more muscles that one can exert.

Muscles DO help with control. Which is easier for you to lift with, and control what you are lifting....your pinky or your hand. I would think the higher the range of motion and larger the ability to exert pressure would translate to a higher degree of control.

What do you guys think? The reason I ask is I got into an intellectual "dialogue" with my friend, who said there was no real difference between the two. But I see as the thumb controlling that tiny target reticule, even with sensitivity adjusted, will never be as refined, and in the end, as accurate as the mouse. Although this is all speculation and the disparity between the two is probably very small. I'm curious though.

I prefer mouse+keyboard over a controller any day. I'd rather be able to use all my fingers and wrist movements to control what I do rather than just my thumbs and index fingers. IMHO you have ALOT more controll with mouse+keyboard.

Mouse/Keyboard > Controller

Except the old Panther XL controller... that was one sweet piece.

the mouse i use is a mx310, which is the best, anatomically speaking, and can be bought for pretty cheap too, budget-wise speaking. imo of course which is all you're going to get is opinions. wheres ricko and his thesuarus when we need him? if you're asking if a mouse or a controller is better, then a mouse is definitely better because you can move it as fast as you want and not at a defined speed.

It's mouse vs controller, not mouse+keyboard vs controller :D

Well, if just those two i'll have to go with the controller. There're not enough buttons on the mouse :p

If it's in the degree of control tho, i'll have to go with the mouse. Let's see you play house of the dead with a controller compared to a mouse :p

There's just one drawback with the mouse though... Carpal Tunnel.

I'll take a contoller over a mouse almost anyday. The only games that I benefit from using a mouse in are RTS games, those blow with a controller.

If it is just "Mouse vs controller" and not "mouse+keyboard vs controller", then you can only use the controller with one hand, to be fair...

now choose...

I think you see what I mean...

Ditto. Though, I play a lot of CS:S with a mouse, but have yet to try it with a controller. But overall, gamepad>all.

Depends. Give me a game like Prince of Persia, or any other adventure game and a controller is a requirement. However for RTS and games like WoW, I need m+k. Jury is still out on FPS games, and console FPSs usually add in a bit of autoaim.

Someone who's good with mouse will always beat a guy who's good with a controller. The way the work simply gives the guy with the mouse the advantage. he can aim faster, quicker, and per precisely, and has access to more movement keys which make him more agile. (Yes, I've tried console controllers, and yes I'm halfway decent with them)

Trackball.

Multiple fingertips mean more precise control than either thumb or wrist. Also, for less precise, quicker movement you can flick it and send it rolling, which if you do with a mouse will send it off the table.

Of course, most people are too set in their ways with a mouse and will never give the ball a chance.

I have. I found it horrible. It is decent for quick imprecise movements and small adjustments, but is nowhere near fast enough, or accurate enough for fast paced FPS games, and is also not very good at long, smooth, straight movements.

Really? Used the trackball as long as you've used a mouse?
No. I tried them several times on other people's computers. I haven't had one since the Windows 3.1 days.

I personally think the keyboard+mouse combo is better just because of the great range and speed of movent compared to any controller i've ever used and i've used them right from atari and colleco. that being said hopefully xbox 2 will have cross platform xboxlive support so we can finally put this debate ro rest. (which i think we pc gamers will destroy u consol users)((at least i hope))

Mouse > Analog Stick > Trackball

I say analog stick is > than a trackball because...if you ever fling (accidentally or purposefully) a trackball...you spin in circles, but an analog stick is so much slower than a mouse, even at higher sensitivities. (Yes, I do own a trackball mouse, and use it often. Helps when i'm lazy and half-asleep)

Okay so it's mouse (only) vs contoller. My bad. Even so with a mouse you use your wrist for any major movement and fingers for the finer movements. With a controller your stuck with just a thumb. For example, I find it is extremely hard to aim on FPS with a controller. I play Halo & Halo 2 on Xbox as well as Halo on PC and I find I do ALOT better on PC all around. I think the finer movements (like aiming a sniper rifle while looking through a scope fully zoomed in) are best done with the more dexterous fingers than the more cumbersome thumb. Longer, less precise movements are about equal with either. On the other hand with an analog stick you have to be able to move the pointer/object the point you need it and then return it to the sticks neutral point. Having to do this makes it far less accurate when moving from point to point than a mouse. IMHO....mouse takes the cake "hands down" :D

Maybe you just haven't tried the right one.

I've tried those trackballs that you move with just your thumb. I couldn't play worth shit. My thumb just doesn't have the dexterity for it. But i tried my cousins trackball. It's got a huge plastic ball in the center slightly smaller than a tennisball (Can't remember exactly) and it was much much easier to control. It's a pretty good substitute for a mouse when dealing with simple flightsims like aquanox or descent.

I'm gonna ask him the next chance i get if i can have it :D

Err... you can bet they'll dumb down the console version to compensate (Like autoaim). Any halfdecent mouseuser can out-headshot any half-decent pad user. Would it still be fair if there was a fight between a user with manual aim, versus one with computer assist?

I would think, anatomically, the MX1000 would be best... it's the most comfortable IMO.

Yes, the MX1000 is very ergonomic, but it is also quite heavy, so it depends on your habits, as using a heavy mouse for a long time can make you uncomfortable.

The mouse and keyboard combo is much better than the a controller. With a keyboard, you have many more keys for a much wider range of actions you can perform. Mice are also much more precise.

for me it is mouse (mx 1000 laser) + ms strategic commander

keyboard only sits there for chat, when not using voip or cell phone for chat :)
