Mouse Modification??

Is there any way to hack a standard PS2 mouse to use a USB plug, without using an adapter? Its a standard optical mouse that I am using (I am not sure if that matters) and after opening it up, as far as I can tell there are only four wires coming in from the PS2 plug. There are also four wires for USB, does anyone know if the two ends can just be swapped?

Sorry, it's unpossible.
PS/2 has +5v, ground, clock and data
USB has +5v, ground, data+ and data-

I don't know the technical details but I believe that the mice that come with these adapters support both PS/2 and USB somehow and basically detect the interface that they are connected to.

Considering the cost of a new mouse, I doubt it's even worth bothering with. USB mice start at $5...
