Mouse - DPI vs Polling Frequency

I hope polling frequency is the right term. Here's my understanding of most of this:

USB - 125Hz
PS/2 - Up to 200Hz
DPI - the resolution of the mouse.

This sound about right? Please correct if wrong.

I remember when I got my first Logitech gaming mouse - the big three button ball mouse. When I raised the PS/2 Freq, everything smoothed out. And of course my accuracy went way up. It was a welcome change. Here I am years later still stuck at 200Hz. I wonder if were possible to increase it if it would make a difference.

Most opticals have 800dpi resolution and some of the gaming mice like Razer have much higher dpi numbers. Doesn't increasing the DPI just minimize the size of movement required to go from point A to point B and the precision to some point? Aren't you still restricted by the hardware connections (at least to some extent)? Are there any other ports that have a higher polling freq - maybe like firewire? <--suppose I could google that. :)

lol no mouse in hell is going to interface to firewire.
 
If you have USB 2.0 and WinXP SP2, there is a USB 2.0 hack floating around that you can find on Google that changes the USB polling from 125Hz to 500Hz, depending on which mouse you use. If you have a Logitech MX500, you can get 500Hz polling. If you have a MX510, you will only get, surprisingly, 250Hz. Google for it and see what I mean.

Ran home and installed driver and it seems to cap at 450 for me. I read somewhere that some 510s hit 500 - maybe two different versions. Smoothed things out big time. Wow!

Here's a quote from poster X-Con over at Quakeworld:

1. Download the file to a temp location.
2. Reboot and start Windows in safe mode.
3. Copy the updated usbport.sys into %systemroot%\windows\system32\dllcache
4. Copy the updated usbport.sys into %systemroot%\windows\system32\drivers
5. Reboot
6. Done

They say some devices may not work properly with the higher rates.
