I'm looking at a few gaming mice and wanted to get some opinions on them.

First up are the Gigabyte mice which I can't too much info on...

The 6800:

The only difference I can see between them is the 6880 is laser and has a high gloss black finish vs a dual lens optical and matte finish on the 6800.

The other two are the MS Sidewinder X5:

Why not just get another MX500? :D

The Sidewinder is probably a better choice than the Salmosa simply because if the MX500 was a good fit for you, the Salmosa may be a bit too small.

The G500 mentioned above is probably one of the best mice you will get for 40 bucks, unless you find a DeathAdder on sale.

Get the Sidewinder if you want to stay near 30 bucks because it's a good mouse, but that G500 is quite tempting.

Edit: That's a great price on the DeathAdder, of all the mice you've listed, that one at 33 bucks is probably the best value.

Not sure I could get a mouse that lacked two side buttons. Why is it razor mice lack these buttons? Is it because they're so "flat"? Seems like they could squeeze in a forward/back button on the side if they tried.

I don't understand the need for a 'gaming mouse'. My basic $20 Microsoft Optical does everything I want it to do and I have never once felt it was holding me back.

Is a gaming mouse supposed to just make you feel better, sorta like sugar pills makes a hypochondriac feel better?

Better fit for your hand. Lots more customizable buttons. Better accuracy and tracking. Adjustable resolution.

Mostly marketing hype the same as gaming keyboards. Sure you might get incremental benefits in mouse technology and quality but I have no trouble at all pwning with my MX500.

For good players who are actually being held back by a poor and imprecise mouse, it can help. But for the vast majority it's just in their heads. The best rifle in the world still won't hit anything if the user is the reason why the shots are missing. Most mice are good enough to support their user's aim.
 
I picked up the Sidewinder X5 for my son for Christmas and got to play around with it a little and I have to say I really like it. It's very light, but I am used to my heavy MX1000.

I picked up a G500 from BestBuy when they had them on sale for $40.

I must say G500 makes a damn fine gaming mouse. I'm not sure about the normal price tag of $70. You may be able to find a better mouse for that price tag. But for $40 this is a great mouse.

I've actually found the programmable buttons and adjustable on-the-fly DPI extremely useful. If only because I don't have to take my fingers off the WASD keys to open my inventory or something.
(Using a Microsoft Habu btw. I like it a whole lot more than the DeathAdder)
 
any decent pc gamer can make ingame-sensitivity-binds for his games, hell even razieL (one of the best aimers european RTCW community ever had ) used to swap between normal fov + medium sens to narrow fov + low sens on the fly when he engaged long range targets, so you don't really need a mouse with adjustable dpi on the fly.

As long as bigdogchris is NOT talking about ms basic optical but intellimouse explorer 3 / intellimouse optical 1.1 / wheel mouse optical 1.1 he's totally right, btw move this thread to the mouse and keyboard forum, i'm sick of seeing these topics here

I still prefer the death adder as my gaming mouse.. I got and tried the G500 and am now using it on my 24/7 rig... just didn't like it as much as the DA for gaming though.
 
I have been looking at the Coolermaster Sentinel or the Roccat Kone.
Both are out of the price range but seem like are great gaming mice.

I have 2 mx1000s and still use them for work and gaming, lol. I just got a dinovo edge keyboard and it's so crisp it makes my mx1000 feel old. It still works perfectly but I'm thinking of selling one to a friend and picking up an mx precision mouse.
 
I've used a razer krait for years. Also occasionally use a microsoft habu, but the krait, despite only having 3 buttons, I will always love. It's incredibly light, and super easy to whip the cursor across the screen with. I even bought one for work.
