Motherboard installation

You mean the grooves basically act as standoffs? I guess you should be fine as long as you're completely positive that the motherboard won't be touching any metal besides the small spots where the screws will go. Otherwise I don't think the motherboard will be too fond of sitting on metal.

Do you mean like bumps where the motherboard screws into? I would still try stand offs just to be sure.

Do I have to install motherboard standoffs in my case? My case has grooves coming out of it and my motherboard can be installed without standoffs. When I say standoffs, I mean these: http://www.overclockers.com/articles984/stand_offs.jpg

What would be the up side in not installing them?

Often one of the standoffs will have an OD at the top which is larger and will allow you to easily align your MB during installation. If you have one of those, I suggest you place that special standoff at one of the corners. During installation, push the corner of you MB into the standoff first and alignment is simple.

You still need to use them. If you don't the motherboard won't align with the backplate and pci slots. Plus, there's always the risk of a short circuit because of the case's composition. Install them to be 100% safe.

Actually, the post above got me thinking. I would install the mobo without them first and see how it fits, but don't power it up or anything until you're sure about everything. I say this because I think it may be the opposite of what the previous poster said. I can't be 100% sure just from looking at the pictures, but it almost looks like if you were to put standoffs on it, then the PCI slots wouldn't be able to screw in properly, and the backplate wouldn't be aligned, due to the double height of the standoffs+bumps. If it does fit correctly without the standoffs, then it must be made to work that way. On the other hand, though, if the bumps alone don't raise the mobo off the tray enough to install PCI cards, then you'll need standoffs.
