Most "silent" keyboard?

Anyone have any idea which keyboards make the least amount of sound when typing on the keys? Just going to any store it varies quite a bit. I prefer the keys when struck to make the least amount of sound, and those usually have a damped feel as they hit the bottom of their downward motion almost like they are rested above a layer of padding or something.

Anyway, not advertised usually, so for those who have tried many, what are the most silent keyboards to use?

I tried an Microsoft X6 the other day at a friends and I was truly impressed. For what its worth, his was pretty new still and the keys were very quiet, short throw, and just felt of great quality. I really wanted to hate the keyboard but was impressed.

I can tell you this much to, my Lycosa is bloody loud. Just an FYI.

I've tried dozens of keyboards over the years and have discovered that the Logitech UltraX laptop-style keyboard is the quietest.

I'm pretty happy with my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard. It has the laptop style scissor keys which I find pleasing to type on.

That's the problem with flying everywhere for work, you get used to typing on a laptop and it feels weird when you try to type on a normal keyboard...

This is the best keyboard I've used in a long time. Very smooth and quiet too.

I like my Logitech Illuminated as well. Not sure if its the quietest keyboard around, but it certainly isn't loud if one doesn't mash the keys.

Not for gaming, but have you thought about the rubber keyboards. After the kid poared milk on my old stock dell keyboard, I went with the rubber one for day to day use.

I also have one and it's much quieter than my old Logitech Multi-Media one.

Just picked up the illuminated keyboard when it was on sale. It really is nice. Much quieter than my old keyboard, and looks amazing both at nice and during the day. Only gripe is the learning curve for the new feel. My old keyboard was a different type of keyboard, the kind where your keystrokes travel farther down with each key press, this keyboard has much more shallow keystrokes so it feels alot different. I am getting more used to it though.

i'll add to all of the recommendations for the Logitech illuminated keyboard. picked one up last weekend and it's a very well made keyboard. pretty quiet too.

I'll tell you what not to get for a quiet keyboard: anything that says "mechanical" in the name.

actually the hhkb silent edition is out in japan, its not mechanical, its better: topre

but i doubt u'll spend over $270 for a keyboard

A cheaper version of the Logitech Illuminated is the Logitech UltraX, it has similar keys I believe (laptop type keys) but it's a full sized keyboard, it's easily my favorite keyboard and it's pretty cheap as well!

edit: as this is about silent keyboards, it's obviously not super silent but as with most "laptop type" keys it's quiet silent (most likely around the same as the illuminated, although that's really guessing..)

I own both (1 Logi Illuminated and 2 UltraX) and it's safe to say they are both pretty quiet. I don't think the UltraX is sold anymore though, and when I called Logitech to RMA one of mine they sent me an Access 600 instead. I haven't tried it yet but I wanted another UltraX because I love that keyboard. One of the best keyboards for the $ I've ever purchased, but the 600 could be promising even if it doesn't have the same laptop-style keys. I'm finding it hard to break myself away from my Filco right now, though...

I know I can get UltraX keyboards here in Sweden at least, but they do seem to be phasing out but the versions I have seen are named "Logitech UltraX Premium Keyboard" and "Logitech UltraX Media Keyboard" but it's a shame if they've stopped making them because they are SO awesome and still cheap, hell I might just buy another one so that when this one breaks I won't be out of luck finding a new one (my current one is starting to wear out after a few years of very heavy use)

edit: there's also one named "Logitech UltraX Flat Keyboard" and all 3 models seem to be pretty much the same (might be minor differences, not sure but they look pretty much identical on the pictures at least) and there is a black version of it (mine is the Silver version)

Silent, but awful to type on :p

^^ I just checked out one of these today. Yes they win the award for silent. But does it work?

My aluminum Apple keyboard is pretty silent IMO, although YMMV.
Think it works on Windows, too.

The keyboard posted by Keenan would be ideal, but for a true keyboard which has a gaming side to it, I would say my old Saitek 1 was pretty quiet compared to my G15.

*Also, I would go to Best Buy or your local computer shop to fiddle around with the display keyboards, that would be a huge help to hear/feel them for yourself.

I want to shoot every damn one of those things I see. I absolutely refuse to use them and won't allow them near me. Yes, I hate them that much.

LOL. The only time I've ever seen them in the wild is bolted down in kiosk installations. And yes, they suck that much. If it were possible, I think I'd rather hook my Blackberry to the computer with bluetooth and type via that :p

Here in Aus you can get a Logitech Ultra flat (without the X) and its pretty noisy

very noise indeed

I think the Ultra Flat is a bit different from the UltraX though, how much of a difference there is I don't really know though..

True, but the quieter the keyboard is the worse it feels to type on.

Those Topre switches sound like they'd be a step above membrane based keyboards, but not the equal of mechanical keyboards. Though many people from both camps switch to them and swear by them. I'm just not going to spend the money to find out if they are worth a damn or not. Aside from that my mechanical keyboards are where its at. However anyone craving silence would absolutely freak to type on Cherry MX Blue switch based keyboards.
