x... on the PayPal FTW

I have got to the point if a site or a Ebayer will not take PayPal I don't do business with them.

I have not bought anything from MonoPrice. Are they really as good as the prices are? Are the cables cheap junk or they just as good as the next?

Well, that is stupid. Maybe they were hitting CC number limits. I guess if everyone used it there would not be enough numbers to go around.

Their products are really good for the money, I've never had issues there. I stopped recommending them to friends and family after finding out about the weak password security though.

I've bought cables from other cheap companies as well and always thought the monoprice ones were better quality. Their TV mounts are also very good deals.

This is on MP's Privacy Policy:

We employ the latest 128-bit encryption technology in all areas of the site, which requires you to provide your personal or account information, including online ordering, and order status. Your name, your personal information and especially your credit card number are safely stored in our proprietary systems behind our firewall. Once you type your personal information, it is sent instantly, encrypted, directly to our order processing system which is on a server separate from our internet server.

So if your information is stolen and used fraudulently, what recourse do you have? Sue MP?

This sux. It's one thing about a recent compromise, but "ever"? That's why I hate it when e-tailers want to retain CC info. on their servers.

"The Monoprice website is unable to accept andy orders (which includes order via phone, or livechat) while we correct some problems and perform maintenance.
It may take another week or two for us to have the servers completely back up and running in order for us to take orders from customers.
Truly sorry for any inconvenience it may cause you. Thanks again for your understanding and doing business with us."

That's going to be a very painful quarter for them.

I believe he was making a joke out of the fact that a lot of people consider Paypal very shady for a legitimate company.

The joke was clearly too subtle for some. Which should be some protection from the libel suit. ;)

No strange charges for me after the one purchase I ever made on Monoprice. Has no one stopped to think that Monoprice shoppers probably got referred from somewhere? I went there directly after good references from [H] members but a link posted in a forum somewhere could lead to all sorts of nasty (with or without some new cables out of the deal).

I think I used PayPal and CC on Monoprice. I hope my CC is safe... But I think I should change the number.

Made a purchase there on Jan 27 and used my CC. Haven't seen any strange charges on it.

Although I don't think they could do a whole lot with that last 4 bucks that's on it anyway.

No charges on my card but to be safe I went ahead and had the bank issue me a new card. Monoprice has saved me a bundle on stuff for my Home Theater. Also keep in mind this could not be monoprice's fault but whoever they use to process CC transactions similar to the Heartland Payment Systems hack

I'd like to know the time span we have to be worried about too... been a long time since I ordered from them... but if they're sitting on numbers, time frame may not matter.

My boss found a $1 charge on the company card after i alerted him about this. We have ordered a lot of cable and monitor mounts from MP.

Glad we were able to catch it before any real hassle was created, card canceled

I just ordered some stuff a week or two ago. They're one of my favorite vendors, I hope they get it worked out soon.

I just faxed my CC company the fraudulent charges report for things that were charged to my card from a few months back.

Quick cash (under $4)
An airline ticket.
Fat burning pills.
A watch that game with free sunglasses.

The pills and watch and sunglasses actually came to my office. Perhaps they were testing the card to see if it was working before using it to sell a ticket to fly someone to Wisconsin. I sent the watch and glasses back to the company and the fat burning pills people said I could keep them. The guy I work with heard good things about the berries and he saved the bottles from the dumpster.

This is my company card and I use it at very few places. One of those places is monoprice.

I've been scratching my head trying to figure out where in the world my info may have been snatched.

Maybe it was at monoprice, perhaps it was somewhere else.

I like monoprice a lot. Best of luck to them.

I'm seeing a fair number of people mentioning that they got something last week.
My last purchase was back in October/November, so I know it at least goes back that far.

My CC company called me last fall and told me that they found my # on the Internet and had to cancel the card. There were no fraudulent charges posted. I assumed some disgruntled waiter/waitress copied my #s and sold it to someone. Now I wonder if it was b/c MP was compromised, even though this story broke yesterday and my # was allegedly compromised a few months ago.

comprehend!;) i knew all that, i was pointing out how paypal rips everyone off and i wonder why they would actually provide a service for just a one time fee, not monthly or per-transaction. its not like them!:p im guessing they hate fraudulent charges as much as we do.

I bought about 2 1/2 weeks ago from monoprice and someone tried to charge $414 in texas, the bank called and cancled my card because it wasn't me. Kind of sucks because now I need ethernet keystone jacks and they are way expensive everywhere else.

same question , I bought something a year and a half ago.

Not that I won't monitor the card anyway, but if I don't have to do it daily or just go about cancelling and getting a new one, I won't bother.

from other forums im reading, it appears to only effect people who purchased something from monoprice in the last two weeks. im not sure that is the case, but it appears that way. i have ordered a LOT from monoprice myself, but my last order from them was a few months ago, and i have no fraudulent charges on any of my accounts.

Well this makes a lot of sense then.

I bought a bunch of cables from them about a week and a half ago. Yesterday I received a call from my bank about weird spending habits. Sure enough, I was missing around $250 from my bank account that was spent on Orbitz.com, Harvey World, iTunes and something denoted as "SA". I canceled my card and ended up trying to cancel all those payments...

I don't think anyone knows and too bad MonoPrice doesn't seem to know either (or at least hasn't publicized it). :(

Sigh, two weeks ago I bought a TV mount at Monoprice and I just got notice this morning my card was compromised. A couple fraudulent online orders were attempted in the last day.

10 years of online transactions with no problems until this. Damn Monoprice.

It took a while, but my AMEX was compromised this morning. Thanks Monoprice.

Damn, sorry to hear that. :(

I'm going to feel like an ass b/c I strongly recommended to a friend last month to buy some misc. cables and adapters from MP, which he did. I'll tell him to keep a keen eye on his CC transactions.

In my case, I don't think I've ordered from MP since I got a new CC # last fall, so I should be OK, but I need to review my MP order history, assuming they still have that page available.

Thanks Monoprice... my card was used for some online BS this morning. At least they caught it and notified me.

I'm going to write Monoprice a nice little email.

We expect the site to be available again in 1 hours around 1PM, Monday, March 15th, 2010.

guys i wouldnt be too quick to blame monoprice... i mean i dont know for sure but there is a good chance they didnt do anything wrong.

the ONLY time in my life i have had fraudulent charges on a credit card was for a card i have never even used, anywhere. it was still sitting in my drawer with the activation sticker on it (it was activated though) and it didnt take but a couple months when suddenly there were two $75 charges on it. i had to call visa and i asked how a card could be compromised when it was never even used... and they couldnt give me an answer. around the same time i read about datacenters being physically broke into and thousands of personal account info banks being stolen, so i pretty much got the idea. point is, none of our monies are really safe.

^ Well, it seems like there's too much correlation from what people have said in this thread to *not* blame MP. They shouldn't have stored CC on their servers, or at least have secured them better. For example, you don't hear about Amazon's servers being broken into, and you'd think they'd be a much bigger and more appealing target for crackers than MP.
