Monitor going out?

Okay, after almost six years (purchase date: 12/05), I think my Samsung SyncMaster 204T is going out. Each time I turn it ON, the screen flickers really fast, then the image goes out. I can see whatever is suppose to appear for a split second then it goes out. The On light remains, but no display. If I turn it OFF then ON again, it does the same thing, flickers for a split second, then goes out again. If I repeatedly trying to turn it ON and OFF, it eventually works. Once it works, it will work until you turn it OFF for couple hours and it will repeat the flickering cycle.

Those electronics experts out there, is there something I can do to fix it? This monitor is probably one of the best investments I've ever made. The screen is still like new like when I first got it. No dead pixels either. It's baseless now as the stand broken awhile back. I would still want to keep it if it can be fixed. I would feel bad letting it go if it can't be fixed.

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Those are the symptoms of bad capacitors, which are fairly easy for someone with reasonable soldering skills to replace. The hardest part is figuring out which ones are bad, although if it's making any kind of high pitch noises, you can probably track down the exact worn out part that way. It's probably in the power section.

There's lots of stuff on the internets about people replacing the capacitors in monitors to revive them. Here's the first link I pulled off of google, it has some good pictures: http://martybugs.net/electronics/Acer-AL1716-caps.cgi

Even better, http://www.djhome.net/tips/samsungsyncmaster204T.htm this looks like the exact monitor with the same problem.

Okay, been searching for the best quality caps to get to replace the assumed bad caps on my monitor. What's the best brand to get? Is Nichicon any good? Or what about Nippon? Panasonic? Illinois?

Yeap, I opened up the monitor according to article in that link and true to what it says, the two caps are bulged as described. So, I need to order the correct caps and fix it. It shouldn't be too hard, I hope.

Just an update: Finally the part I ordered from Hong Kong came and I desoldered the two bulging caps and put the two new ones in and it's working wonderfully. Now, if I can find a stand for it, it'd be even better. The stand broke last summer. Anyone knows if there is a stand made specially for this monitor?

I'm glad you got your monitor working again. It always make me smile to see someone work with their hands and get something repaired!
