Money in a winter Jacket

I remember one Fall I put on my winter jacket for the first time that season. I went outside into the cold and put my hands in my pockets. Low and behold, I found a $20 bill. I'm sure a few of you out there have had a similar experience.

So, as I have stated in another thread, I went on a spending spree last week and ended up with the parts for a new 3400+ folding box. The one thing I was short on was a Hard Disk Drive.

Today the FEDEX man was very good to me. He brought me a 3400+ processor, 3 new Heat Sink Fans and 3 new cases. So this evening I have sat down to start swapping a few boxes , HSFs, etc.

Well the first box I opened up used to be my gaming rig. A nice little watercooled Athlon XP 2500+ mobile. Can you say dusty? Well it was. But as I was rooting around, low and behold, there is sitting an 80GB SATA HDD. Not plugged in or anything. Hehe! What a nice folding present. Now I have a HDD for my new folding box.

Money found in the jacket, I say.

Anyways, thought I would share this happy moment. :)

Sounds like a heck of a find Hito... you got anything else hidden in that magic boxen of yours?

Seems to happen to me each year with both of my winter jackets, and each time winter hits, I know its time to get out the jackets and check the pockets!

Well, I found a floppy disk drive, but that isn't a big deal except I thought I didn't have any computers with floppies in them.

I've got 5 more cases to go through though, so who knows.

Excellent find there!

This reminds me of a story that Relic told us ..... and to summarize (cause he is the [H]ard bard and can make it much more interesting than me) it, I think it was in June, that one of his sons found a DUALLY box (a mobo with two cpu's in it) in the closet. 6 months, SIX MONTHS after christmas (It was intended to be a christmas present, for the PRIOR christmas). That story had us in stitches for quite a while!!!!

Ciao for now .....

Wow, that was a great story. I especially enjoyed the parallel between finding the dough in your pocket and the hard drive in the case. That made it a far more exciting read than if you had simply stated, "I found a hard drive in one of my boxen". Way to put that Annapolis education to good use!

Thanks Schmave. Your hard earned tax dollars at work.....

Well, only 1 box set-up today.

I took my 2500+ Mobile Watercooled rig and flipped the processor from its old Epox 8k3a+ motherboard to an Abit NF7-S motherboard that I bought for it about 4 months ago. I put it in a nice little Antec case with a 120mm case fan and put a new Artic Cooling 2M fan on it to replace the watercooling. I haven't spent much time tweaking the O/C. I'm hoping to get over 2.4GHz FAH stable. Right now it is at 2.3Ghz and going through a little Prime95 lovin'.

The 3200+ that was in the NF7-S will be moving to the EPOX 8k3a+. I'll be putting it into an old Micron case that I have that has great airflow (2 92mm case fans). the 3200+ is probably my hottest CPU (especially since it is a dedicated 24/7 folder). I will be replacing the Stock Heatsink with another Artic Cooling 2M fan. So far I am really impressed with those fans which is good since I bought 3 sight unseen. They have a nice open cowling (watch your fingers), they are practically silent even at the highest fan speed and have a 3-speed switch. Good to go.

I'll at least get the 3200+ up and running naked before I go to sleep. I don't want to miss that much folding time. The case it's going into needs to be cleaned out and I'm not doing that at 11PM.

Tomorrow, I will finish up the 3200+ and then move onto the next 2 computers. I think I will be moving around 8 of my 11 boxes around. I guess I'll use this thread as a kind of folding work log. I might even throw in a few pics because I know Marty likes the DC P0rn.

Anyways, Hito out for tonight.

Well, I continued my farm cultivating this evening.

First, I realized that my 8k3a+ motherboard would not support the 3200+ I was trying to shove into it (no 200FSB support). Luckily I had a 2500+ Barton in a Chaintec mATX motherboard sitting around. So the first task was to clean out my old Micron case that had had the 2500+ mobile in it (see last night's work).

I cleaned out the case. Turned off my 2500+ Barton computer, took that computer and case all apart and switched the 2500+ and 3200+ on the motherboard. By dinner I had the 3200+ in the Micron case and back folding (approximate 1.5 hours).

Eat dinner, at Taco Hell and then back to work. I cleaned up the MicroATX case and threw in a Pentium II 400 (see my thread on requesting help with Linux, thanks Unhappy Mage and others). Got that up and running. I then took that box and a SFF 2400+ computer I had in the family room out to the garage hooked them up to the switch out there and got them running again.

9:20PM. One last computer to take care of tonight. I got the 2500+ set up in a new Aluminum Skyhawk case I recently bought (bought 3 cases @ $29 each + shipping). It has a nice removeable mobo tray (first time I've had one of those). They are very nice for prepping the mobo. Got that system up and running and time for bed.

Tomorrow I need to move my Sempron 3000+ (S754) out of its current case and move it to a Skyhawk case, Move a 2100+ into the case vacated by the Sempron and then, if the FEDEX man has been good to me, I get to put my new Athlon 64 3400+ (S754) together.

I will then take some well deserved rest before I start tweaking all the set-ups for maximum folding.

Hito out.

Ged dem dats alot of work!

Sounds like a prosperous nights work, Hito. Will all this extra stuff, spare parts and everything, how many more PC's is this netting you?

Just one in the end, plus a little more overclock, and a lot more quiet and neat farm.

Nice case Hito, kind of a Lian-Li style... How's the build quality? A couple of those and that Semperon combo deal might fit together real nice.. :D

Slightly flimsy (not bad though), the Al finish is kinda rough and the little doohickies that cover the empty bays are kinda weak but outstanding price for system.

And my new DFI board is on the truck for delivery (thanks FEDEX guy) so I should have another 2.4Ghz+ folding for the horde this evening.

Yea there are minor things to the case... imho the hdd bays suck... thats why i found
a couple cooldrive2's off ebay for my hdds and just got rid of the bays in the bottom..

You guys were supposed to tell me its complete crap and that I should stay well away! ;)

Well who's going to be the one responsible when I have to tell the wife I blew a pile of cash on boxen?!? (Personally, I'll be blaming Kodiak)

Thanks for the info guys!

oh.. the other slight pita... was getting the psu in there...

i dont know if it was the same with your cases... but there were little black hairs stuck in every single place something was screwed together... was painful for someone.. and most of the screws were semi-stripped... some scratches here and there.. but for the money...

HDD bay isn't the greatest I would agree. I would like some rubber grommets in there like in my Antec case to keep the vibration noise down.

I didn't have any trouble with the PSU bay. I just unscrewed the Al bracket on the back of the case. Screwed that piece onto the PSU and slid the whole assembly into the PSU bay.

I haven't had a problem with the screws. They are all thumb screws and except for being on pretty tight they have been oustanding.

Well im talking most of the smaller ones (as i took the whole thing apart..)

yea i forgot.. had to break out the powerdrill to undo some of the thumb screws..

String.

Or nothing.

Nice find, HB. I've done similarly before.. I have WAY too many hard drives.

oh for my psu bay... the psu kept rubbin up against everything because it was a little tight... leaving scratches on the case and the psu

hmmm. I was using an Antec PSU. No probem with them. Maybe your case was a little warped.

You get what you pay for :)

Just curious as to when you get them set up running your case temps/cpu temps

How many fans are you using in them?

There's no such thing. If you were literally up to your waist in drives, I might change my mind, but not until then. :p

So far just the stock. It seemed to have pretty good CFM output. Since I'm running minimal items (1 cdrom, 1 HDD, integrated video, etc) I think it might be able to handle it.

I haven't decided where to put my new 3400+. It might be a little hotter, but the BFG6800OC I have has an NV5 fan system on it which will actually cool the case temp.

BTW. Looks like FedEx came through. I have a DFI NF3 Ultra..... mobo waiting for me at home:

So, continue my methodical process of moving gear or get that 3400+ Newcastle up and folding???? What do you think?

I think you're asking a slightly biased group here. ;) It's like Christmas morning, get them new toys up and running!

On a side note, those NVSilencers are as good as advertised? I've been on the fence about getting one...

Well, mine replaced the BFG 6800 OC Stock heatsink which wasn't bad but had a bit of a noise to it. This thing is nearly silent (some noise from moving the air) keeps the card quieter (if I remember right, about 10 degrees) and keeps my case about 5-10 degrees quieter. I can afford to lose one PCI slot. For the cost it was well worth it and it was easy to install.

Actually, it's all relic's fault. :p

Well bit of a setback tonight. I don't have the adapter for my water block. So I can't use it on the new 3400+. That means a lot of points lost as I won't have a chance to put this box together for another 2.5 weeks. Oh well. :(

A 3,600 point mistake.
