As far as I'm concerned, if a patent isn't utilized within a relatively short timeframe of perhaps 5 years or so, it should expire.

Basically, every good display tech tanked, and we are left with 4k 3d 8000p curved upside down lightboosting turds.

As far as I'm concerned, we're lucky simply for IPS panel (LCD type) still exist. Few people are willing to buy even that... Very few people today are willing to pay for quality.

Actually almost everything people desire from a monitor already exists (technically speaking), it's just that no manufacturer has had the intelligence (or will) to combine everything into a single model yet.

- IPS/PLS with decent contrast ratio (1000:1 or better)
- average 7-10ms responsiveness / well-balanced overdrive
- true 8 bit with very good color reproduction
- 1080p, 1200p, 1440p, 4K (whatever is your favorite)
- fast built-in scaler with decent interpolation for external devices with lower/legacy resolutions
- light AG semi-glossy coating
- A-TW polarizer or equivalent to suppress most of the corner glow
- overclockable / motion blur reduction technique / G-Sync and shit
- PWM-free
- better quality control against BLB

It is possible to stuff most of these features into one single monitor, but if such a monitor ever comes out I think we will all just buy one and keep it at least 5 years or even longer until something really overall obviously better than LCD and reliable becomes affordable.
We would stop renewing our LCD setups as often as we do now, and I bet no manufacturer wants that.

Regarding the current situation of the display market, rather than working on programmed obsolescence and cost-cutting, maybe manufacturers are just carefully keeping the quality low on purpose, or 'just below expectations', so that they can keep releasing new models regularly while playing some sort of complicated game with the competition and demand, basing everything on little trends and features/details, available parts stocks and rates.

Frankly I doubt any manufacturer rakes enough margin on LCD displays sales anymore to go and just release the best LCD monitor/TV they could design and kill the market.
Keeping it alive artificially, trying to do more volume than margin, tricking the audience, is probably the best policy they came with while everybody's too shy to invest really big money in new display technologies.

We customers being left with 'turd' displays for so long is probably one of the many lasting consequences of the 2007-2008 financial crisis. After all many industries have adopted the same strategy; "better sell shit than nothing" (just look at the budgets allotted for marketing & communication VS. research & development).
