Mobo FSB Question

Hi,

I have an EP45-DS3L motherboard and its listed FSB frequencies are 1600/1333/1066/800 MHz. I have an E8400 CPU running at 9x400 giving me 3.6 GHz and 4x400 gives me 1600 which falls within my mobo FSB specs.

If I wanted to overclock to 4.0 GHz I would need to raise my CPU speed to 445 - but that would give me 4x445 = 1780 which is above 1600. Does that mean it's impossible for me to OC my CPU to 9x445? If it is, then why do I see other people getting to 4.0Ghz and higher on that mobo?

Also, a quick side question: If I'm using DDR2 800 RAM - what frequencies what I need to set it at to work with a 4.0 GHz OC?

Short story, they have ram rated higher than PC800.

Now what you need to do is set your timings to 5 5 5 18 and Dram voltage to 2.1 V. Usually but no guarantees that should get you to the 445 FSB you need. You need to make sure the memory multiplier is as low as it will go, 2.0. Don't leave it on auto as a OCing failure will sometimes have it set higher values and it will not want to boot again requiring a CMOS clear and "do over". A bump or three on MCH voltage will help if its at stock. The MCH/Northbridge gets OCed just like the CPU so a small fan glued to the MCH heatsink or aimed to blow directly at it helps.

The increase dram timings and the very small performance penality it gives will be more than made up in the extra CPU horsepower.

As a last resort a single bump in FSB voltage (Vtt in some bios) might help but only after all else fails.


Now you are doing pretty good at 3.6 and I will bet 3.8 will not be too difficult but after that you start getting into the area where thermal/heatsink performance is critical and some CPUs just wont go any faster no mater how much Vcore you pour on. So watch your temps and CPU voltages over about 1.4V should be used with caution. You cant burn it up but you can burn it out, (heat wont kill it but voltage will) but these things are pretty tough.
