Mobo for basic home PC

What is or will be the use of USB 3.0?

Disregarding USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s, is the Asus M4A785TD-V EVO 785G better than the Giga 880GM-UD2H?

USB 3.0 is simply the latest version of USB. USB 3.0 is faster than USB 2.0 and will probably become the new standard in computer connectivity.

The M4A785TD-V EVO is not better than the Gigabyte 880G mobo. The 880G mobo has a slightly faster onboard video, IN addition, since that Gigabyte mobo has the "UD" marking, it means that it is better geared towards overclocking.

In terms of standard USB equipment, such as a mouse or keyboard, would there be any significant reason to spend the extra at the moment? Would external HDs be the only things to receive a considerable benefit from 3.0? What about SATA 6GB/s? When do you think these two things are going to become the new standard? I know how rapidly technology can advance, so I'm wary of buying something that may quickly become obsolete.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Yeah ext HDDs are pretty much the major item that'll beneift from USB 3.0. For mouses and keyboard, no real difference. What about SATA 6Gb/s? USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s will more likely be the standard within a minimum of a year IMO. With that said, mechanical drives really won't benefit that much with SATA 6Gb/s judging from current advancement rates. It's really only SSDs that'll really make SATA 6Gb/s necessary.

Do note that USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s are backwards compatible with their respective older versions. For a basic system meant for web browsing, youtube videos and the occassional word docs, the two above standards don't really matter. Besides, you can always get an add-on card for USB 3.0 or SATA 6Gb/s later on if you actually need those features later one.

USB 3 already has some stuff out now that makes use of it. I have seen a couple of external HD enclosures and the speed bump over USB 2 is IMPRESSIVE, SATA 6GB will not see it's worht truly until we see better SSD pricing. It is just not possible for a spindle drive with the current technology to fill that bandwidth.

At the end of the day if you are looking at the same price get the 800 series over the 700 series. You might not make full use of the features but they will be there for you when you are ready for them.
